The evaluation was undertaken at the same time as: • an evaluation of sportscotland supported work in the schools and education environment; and • research exploring sportscotland’s contribution to the Active Scotland Outcomes Framework: schools and education and clubs and communities environments, which included a large scale survey with 3,000 responses from club members at sportscotland supported clubs. Key findings from the large scale survey have been highlighted within this report. This evaluation is part of a series of sportscotland wider evaluations being undertaken from 2017 to 2019. These look in depth at how the programmes sportscotland deliver alongside partners support the sporting system. They provide insight into what is working well and what could be improved. These will be used to inform sportscotland’s next planning cycle. The sportscotland range of support The Clubs and Communities Framework – Working Together – sets out sportscotland’s framework for supporting clubs and community organisations. sportscotland support in the clubs and communities environment includes: Programme Aims Scale in 2016/17 Community Sport Growth in participation 179 CSHs Hubs (CSHs) Reducing barriers to 96 in schools participation 1,248 clubs involved Developing pathways 155,000 club members Supporting leadership, 60 CSH officers volunteering and workforce £1.5 million per annum development Scottish Support club development 638 focus clubs Governing Body and growth 70,000 club members for sport (SGB) 50 sportscotland supported regional posts SGB regional posts £1.7 million per annum i Programme Aims Scale Direct Club Growth in club membership 122 clubs invested in between Investment (DCI) and developing talent 2013 and 2017 32,000 club members From late 2017 – focus on 187 DCI supported paid posts opportunities for under- (part time) represented groups £0.78 million per annum Sport Facilities Supporting facilities for 2012/13 to 2016/17 Fund community recreation, club Invested in 232 facilities sport of high performance £28.8 million invested training and competition Investment in every local authority in Scotland Awards for All Supporting clubs to build healthier, safer, stronger, 174 awards in 2016/17 more equal and more sustainable services which £0.9 million in 2016/17 help people have better chances in life Help for Clubs Supporting clubs to improve Guidance online their quality and governance Participation Overall, sportscotland support has helped clubs and groups increase their membership and participation. It also has a growing membership from around the world and prides itself on being independent from US Swimming. It works however, closely with the governing body over a range of issues including coach education which ASCA runs for swimming in the US. The ASCA conference has been held annually since 1969 where 250 coaches attended. Attendances since then have risen to a peak of 1999 coaches in 2003 when it was held in San Diego. A total of 1591 people attended the 2012 ASCA conference. The conference is now titled the “World Clinic” as a means of appealing to as wide an international audience as possible and the locations of the conference over the past 40 years have been many and varied. The 2013 conference will be held in New Orleans. The venue for the 2012 ASCA World Clinic Conference was the Riviera Hotel/Casino, Las Vegas, one of many large hotel/casinos on the Las Vegas strip.

    Scottish Disability Sport - The First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword I was delighted to be asked by Chief Executive Gavin Macleod to record the first fifty years of Scottish Disability Sport, to mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Association. Initially the project was intended to be small but the more I researched, the more it brought back memories of great athletes, superb volunteers and great times. I became determined to try and do justice to as many as those great people as possible. I am certain I shall have forgotten key people in the eyes of others and if so I apologise profusely. For almost four decades SDS has been for me a way of life. The volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with for almost three decades are those I remember with great fondness, particularly during the early years. I applaud the many athletes who contributed to the rich history and success of SDS over fifty years. Outstanding volunteers like Bob Mitchell, Mary Urquhart, David Thomson, Jean Stone, Chris Cohen and Colin Rains helped to develop and sustain my passion for disability sport. I have been privileged to work with exceptional professionals like Ken Hutchison, Derek Casey, Liz Dendy, Paul Bush, Bob Price, Louise Martin, Sheila Dobie, Fiona Reid, Eddie McConnell, Gavin MacLeod, Mary Alison, Heather Lowden, Lawrie Randak, Tracey McCillen, Archie Cameron and many others whose commitment to inclusive sport has been obvious and long lasting.     A Review of the Scottish Sporting Landscape The Jarvie Report 2019 A report for the Scottish Government September 2019 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. This report sets out the findings and recommendations from the consultancy to undertake a review of the Scottish Sporting Landscape. The consultancy was commissioned by the Scottish Government and undertaken by Professor Grant Jarvie from the University of Edinburgh1. 2. The purpose of the report is to offer observations and recommendations on the current Scottish Sporting Landscape with a view to facilitating a more streamlined and coherent voice for Scottish sport. 3. The consultation involved four main stages (i) a briefing and introduction to remit; (ii) consultation through an online survey with key contacts identified by the Scottish Government and sportscotland (iii) a series of follow up correspondence, telephone and/or skype interviews, with 29 respondents; (iv) the analysis of the findings and the production of the final report. 4. The report is structured around the following headings: A short introduction; participant information; issues in Scottish sport; the Scottish sporting landscape; an effective voice for Scottish sport and key recommendations and observations. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS / RECOMMENDATIONS ISSUES IN SCOTTISH SPORT 5. The review noted both the issues facing individual sports organisations and the issues in Scottish sport as reported by respondents. It is evident that a significant overlap exists between the issues raised by individual sports organisations and the key reported issues faced by Scottish sport. 6. More respondents agree that Scottish sport is in a good place. There is, however, substantial evidence to suggest that the core issues facing Scottish sport include: • funding; • leadership; • equality; • capability; • capacity; • strategy; • organisation 7.
