Stanford Technology Ventures STVP-2002-005 Program (STVP) Oct 1, 2002 Global Wireless Ventures In November of 2002, Bjorn Magnusson, Theresa Byers, and Kai Leung Ping, the cofounders of Global Wireless Ventures, had to select the best location to establish the new worldwide headquarters of their new company. Global Wireless Ventures was a startup that was developing a killer application for mobile business professionals and it had the potential to revive the wireless- internet services marketplace. Wireless-internet services were in the doldrums, due to the worldwide recession, and the uncertainty about the future in the wake of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September of 2001. The founders of Global Wireless Ventures were three friends and colleagues who had worked together for four years at NTT DoCoMo, helping to create a phenomenally successful market for wireless services in Japan. Bjorn Magnusson had graduated with a Ph.D. from the department of TeleInformatics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Kista, Sweden. Theresa Byers had earned an undergraduate and masters degree in Computer Science at Stanford. Kai Leung Ping had completed an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at National University of Singapore, and an MBA at the Harvard Business School. All three had learned Japanese in their undergraduate years, and had taken jobs in Japan with NTT DoCoMo in 1998. They wanted to be at the forefront of the wireless-internet services revolution and believed that it would become a major global market. They had learned a lot in their years with NTT DoCoMo, and in 2001 decided that they were ready to launch a new company of their own. -

Abstract This article explores from a multidisciplinary and transnational historical approach the impact of technological change on the structure of the telephone sector, the fruit of advances in microelectronics and information technology. This problem has been studied in Spain basically by regulatory specialists, on the one hand, and technologists, on the other. We lack a more transversal analysis that puts into play the various elements that intervene. This article is intended to cover this gap, based on unpublished primary sources –primarily from Telefónica– as well as in other documents of diverse origin. Specifically, it focuses on the role played by Spain and the historic telephone company (Telefónica) in the transition to the third generation of mobile telephony (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, UMTS) and gives prominence to the national state, to the supranational bodies –EU and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and companies. A Fugitive Success That Finland Is Quickly Becoming a Victim of Its Own Success
Professor Charles Sabel from Columbia Law School and Professor AnnaLee Saxenian from UC Berkeley argue in their book A Fugitive Success that Finland is quickly becoming a victim of its own success. In recent decades Finnish firms in the forest products and telecommunications industries have become world leaders. But the kind of discipline that made this success possible, and the public policies that furthered it, is unlikely to secure it in the future. Efficiency improvements and incremental A Fugitive Success innovations along the current business trajectory will gradually lead these industries into a dead-end unless they use innovation as a vehicle for transforming themselves into new higher value businesses. Saxenian and Sabel raise some serious concerns about the readiness of these industries, and the Finnish innovation system as a whole, for the needed transformation. The central brand-owner firms in the cluster have been accompanied by a high number of smaller industrial supplier firms that base their business on serving their large customer organisations. The research to date on the ICT cluster has largely focused on understanding the development and purchasing strategies of the large customer firms and thus does not provide a sufficient basis for understanding how supplier firms in the cluster operate and develop. -

Report title: Mobile Gaming:A Framework for Evaluating the Industry 2000-2005 Date: 15.06.2001 Pages: 110 A mobile game is a commercial product that is distributed to the customer using mobile operator’s network. The game is an interactive product; many kinds of entertainment services are not covered by this report, such as joke or comics services or the popular ring tone and logo services. What distinguishes mobile games from other kinds of entertainment services is that the interactivity creates so-called stickiness for the service. The games may be addictive and offer something more than “disposable” fun, as operator logos do. The target of this study is to give an introduction to the mobile gaming industry and build a framework for analysing the success of mobile game products and companies. Currently the mobile gaming industry is in the introduction phase. Many start-up companies are developing different games and technologies and believe that they will be the winners when the market moves from introduction to the growth stage. At this point the company must have the critical mass in order to flourish, otherwise the companies with bigger better partnering networks and marketing and sales forces are eating the smaller one. The framework depends on the following methods: the industry and mobile game life cycle model, value distribution in the value delivery network and external company analysis. -

It presents a brief history of mobile gaming, a number of important technologies and introduces classification and evaluation concepts and criteria. A multi- player, multi-platform card game developed in the University of Oulu, is used to present authors' own experiences in this field. 1 Introduction Computer gaming is often thought as children’s free time hobby, but IDSA surveys show that more than half of computer and video game players are over 18 years old. The three top reasons to play games are related to entertainment: fun, challenge, and playing with company. [5] The major challenge of creating a computer game is to make a game for almost everyone, in the mobile environment reality-based games have drawn "special interest". Mobile phone content (MPC) market is pretty young worldwide: in Japan it started in 1999. Estimation of Japanese MPC market size for 2002 is JPY 140 billion, from which downloadable Java games are thought to be JPY 20 billion [20]. Biggest U.S entertainment field in 2001 was music, and after that follow digital gaming (sales of hardware and software) and movie ticket sales [11]. Global markets' of 3G service revenues are estimated to be $320 billion, and mobile gaming worth $23.7 in 2010 [21; 27]. In Western Europe five big countries generate over 70% of the mobile entertainment revenue, and the estimates for the Finnish mobile gaming market size are: 3.55 million EUR in 2001, and 31.13 million EUR in 2005 [16]. -
