Ignoffo: Evaluation of Techniques for Recovering Ectoparasites Evaluation of Techniques for Recovering Ectoparasites1 By CARLO M. lGNOFFO INTRODUCTION This study is an attempt to evaluate quantitatively and compare the effectiveness, selectivity and variation of the flotation technique as a method for recovering ectoparasites. The recovery of ectoparasites from their host has taken on many forms in the past but few attempts have ever been made to compare the various techniques. The first, and probably the most common, method was undoubtedly searching through the pelt to uncover the parasites. The main limitations of searching are that it is tedious and rarely yields ectoparasites in sufficient quantities. Several vari ations of this basic technique of searching have been suggested by Waterston (1912, 1913). The brushing technique, a somewhat more advanced design, has been used rather extensively on both birds and mammals.

Characteristics of larvae, deutonymphs and adults as well as the data on their biology are provided. The selected neotype is a female, from which larvae have been obtained by experimen tal rearing. Teresothrombium is regarded as a new synonym of Trombidium. T. latum Koch, 1837 is a synonym of T. holosericeum, w hereas T. latum s. Oudemans (1910, 1937), Andre (1926), Thor and Willmann (1947) - a synonym of T. rimosum Koch, 1837. T. holosericeum displays an almost edaphic life style except during mating and the parasitic phase of larvae. The life cycle is uni- to semivoltine, females may be iteroparous. Data on host range of larvae and physiological properties of eggs and protonymphs are given. Key w ords. — Acarology, taxonomy, biology, life-history, neotype, Trombidiidae, Trombidium, T. holosericeum. Introduction cerning all instars will also serve as a reference in the process of differentiation of other species belonging to that Trombidium holosericeum is a member of a Holarctic genus. genus including at present 34 nominal species.

2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT SAN DIEGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Mission To interpret the natural world through research, education, and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment. Clouds over the hills in the Sierra Cacachilas. 140 years of excellence...naturally! to the Museum’s mission. Fiscal year 2014 saw the completion of the San Jacinto Centennial Resurvey field work and the beginning of a similar multi-year project in the Sierra Cacachilas, a little explored and biologically rich mountain range southwest of La Paz, Baja California Sur. It is not unreasonable to think that in another 100 years, a new team of Museum researchers and binational partners will revisit these areas in order to observe, collect, and compare how they have changed over time. The Museum benefits from a diversified funding stream including generous contributions from many loyal supporters; contract revenue through October 2014 Paleo and Biological Services; and the revenue from admissions and membership, to highlight a Dear Museum Friends, few. Kollars, Jr. Health Sciences, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA [email protected] Corresponding Author: Thomas M. Kollars, Jr. Abstract: A survey for adult Ixodes scapularis Say and mites was conducted in October at Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) located in northeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Acarines were collected using ProVector® Collector traps and cloth drag. Menhinick’s index and analysis of variance were used to compare mite diversity among soil types. Dragging for adult I. scapularis was conducted throughout TYAD, representing 96% of soil types. Forty individuals from 7 groups of acarines were collected representing Collohmanniadae, Ixodidae, Johnstonianidae, Oribatululoidea, Tetranychidae, Trombiculidae, and Trombidiidae. The Bioagent Transport and Environmental Modeling System was used to compare the presence and abundance of mites, chiggers and adult I. scapularis in relationship to soil maps. There was a significant correlation between number of mites collected and soil type; although, additional trapping of mites on other soil types is necessary to further clarify the relationship. Based on the soil map, a high population of I. scapularis would not be expected at TYAD since sandy soils represented only 1% of the area; extensive dragging confirmed this, with only two adults captured. This work illustrates that readily available GIS data layers can be of significant value in the planning and execution of acarine population surveys.
