SCC 2012 Season Review 4

THE 2012 SEASON

Ricky Gunn

Cricket in all its forms is undergoing change and nowhere more so than at Southgate Cricket Club. Notwithstanding one of the most aesthetic of venues and ready proximity to public transport, it seems impossible for us to attract good and regularly available cricketers, especially perhaps in that critical 20-30 age group.

We are not alone as clubs struggle to maintain their former popularity although the key to our survival would, like Ealing and Winchmore Hill, be easier to ensure if we could become once again ranked as a successful club. But without the players it is a chicken and egg/downward spiral scenario. We are served well by our young players moving up from the colts into adult cricket but they need the reinforcement of mature reliable performers in the teams to allow them the opportunity to settle in, learn from mistakes, gain match experience and grow into valuable players.

It would unfair to heap condemnation on the unfortunate First XI for what must rank as the club’s least successful season in its long and at times glorious history. In failing to match up to the capabilities of their peers in the predictably demanding Premier Division, they were not the only side to suffer disappointment. The Third XI now finds itself relegated from the Middlesex County League into the very second-rate 1987 League – and with emerging teams from the less sociably acceptable quarters of Greater London, we may find it very difficult to clamber back into the “proper” league without a superhuman effort and a lot of good fortune. The 4th XI too was relegated for the third consecutive season into Division 5 of the 1987 League: “freefall” just isn’t the word. Only the 2nd XI who actually sacrificed players and possible promotion at a critical time to bolster the 3rd XI in its death throes came out of the season with any credit.

The 1st XI began the season very optimistically with two easy wins over Wandering Crows and Holtwhites Trinibis. Carmi Le Roux took a against Harpenden with his second delivery in England but from then on the weather and Southgate’s fortunes took a turn for the worse.

It is not especially constructive to harp on about the chronic lack of availability but we have tried to make membership more attractive by promoting an annual subscription of half that demanded by comparable clubs. The ability then to gauge one’s personal expenditure on a match by match basis was hoped to induce players who may only have played three or four games to at least remain on the club’s books and not slip quietly away when the prospect of an annual sub became imminent.

With an eye on the career records listed at the end of this publication, congratulations to Jamie Jouning on exceeding Steve Rowe’s record of 7,582 1st XI League runs, leaving him just 313 runs short of Finchley’s Mike Milton’s League record tally of 7,943. 196 more runs for Alvin

SCC 2012 Season Review 5

Durgacharan would make him only Southgate’s third batsman to exceed 5,000 1st XI League runs and at the more foundational end, Rob Johnson has now passed the 1,000 run and 100 wicket 1st XI League landmarks. On the same theme, congratulations to Doug Gordon on passing 7,000 and Dave Woffinden 5,000 career runs for Southgate during the 2012 season. May there be many more achievements in 2013.

Recent deaths in the Club

Generous on the field and especially in the bar, ‘H’ will be sadly missed. The photo on the right is of ‘H’ when he played for Gillingham (after leaving Spurs). He played 19 times for the Gills in the Southern League, scoring 18 goals. In a game at Priestfield against Hastings on 27 August 1950 Gillingham won 8-0 with 'H' scoring six of the goals. Three days later he scored twice against Gloucester in a 6-1 win. * * * * * * Former Southgate cricketer Derek Jackson died in October. A member since 1956, he kept in regular touch with the club from his home in Maidstone. Derek’s playing highlights include twice taking seven wickets in an innings, 7-29 against Banstead in 1957 and 7-42 against Alexandra Park in 1960, both times at Southgate. He also featured in a 9th wicket stand of 52 scoring 39 with Chris Rawstron away against United Services Portsmouth in 1961.

SCC 2012 Season Review 14

1st XI Report

Rob Johnson

Club Captain Rob Johnson offers his analysis of the league season…

The final game of the season was unfortunately a total waste of time, Southgate shot out for 79 and beaten by 9 wickets by an ebullient and confident Hornsey side safe in the knowledge of an assured fifth position in the Middlesex County Premier League.

To add insult to injury our 2nd XI were hosting Hornsey 2nds back at the Walker so what may normally have been a polite pint and a rapid getaway became a full afternoon’s worth of post- match drinks with the opposition in attendance. It could have been a lot worse though – Hornsey are a good bunch of lads and for a period of time we had some great entertainment watching the 2nds in action on a glorious September Saturday.

So it’s now time for some reflection and analysis, but also some words of thanks to a number of people.

Firstly a thank you to the Southgate players who’ve tried hard in what has been a royal stinker of a campaign. It’s been tough but they’ve given it a go, stuck together and enjoyed a few laughs along the way. At the start of the summer there was some cautious optimism, we had to pick our moments and grab enough points against the weaker opposition when it mattered. Ultimately the moments quickly passed us by, arguably the first two weeks were pivotal and by the end we hadn’t managed even one winning draw!

We’ve used roughly the same group of lads as had been successful in previous seasons, with ten of us playing a dozen or more of the 16 matches (two were rain ruined). Key absentees Creese and Allan sadly managed only two and five matches respectively, which weakened us from the beginning, and the rest took time to adapt to the level. The old hands said we needed four new players of very good standard in order to compete – we started minus three quality players from the side who beat Enfield so thrillingly in the final match of 2011 and we felt the pressure straight away.

The old adage of four wins keeps you up proved correct his season, with Stanmore surviving by a point and sending Brondesbury down to division two for the first time in league history. In hindsight our two games against Stanmore could and should have been won. There was an opportunity in game one against Finchley where the coin came down a head on a rain-sodden wicket, and against Eastcote in the penultimate week with runs on the board our threadbare attack couldn’t contain. The chances were there.

That said, we were always fighting an uphill battle for a number of reasons this summer from the moment we were stuck in on a very sticky one in game one. First and foremost, as well as moving up to a vastly superior standard of cricket, you are also playing a very different type of cricket and the additional 20 overs in the day certainly changes the pace of the game and the levels of concentration required.

SCC 2012 Season Review 15

Overall the standard of the league is very impressive. The fielding in the Premier Division has been very good and I can count on one hand the number of dropped catches against us. We shelled vital catches throughout. Bowlers tended not to bowl much loose stuff and we didn’t have batsman turning starts into big scores, which was commonplace elsewhere. Some of the behaviour in the league is not good enough and needs to be monitored; umpires need to be supported as without them the league wouldn’t exist. This isn’t the view of a Jazzer, I’ve played in the pit villages of South Yorkshire and in the North East where cash is king and winning is everything. Some of the puerile, brattish and downright ugly behaviour I’ve seen isn’t what you get in the professional game, it’s a warped imitation and largely bereft of genuine wit or intelligence. I’m proud of the way my lads conducted themselves again this year.

15 wickets at 31 from only 12 games was less that I’d hoped from our overseas player Carmi Le Roux, but I’m sure he learned a great deal and we were lucky to find someone of his ability prepared to self-fund a trip to the UK when many expect a package with all the trimmings. I wish Carmi the very best of luck for the future and hope to see him in the wickets in his native South Africa this winter. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to first Ricky and Daphne and latterly Adrian who housed our young overseas player this season: this really is appreciated.

It was encouraging at the start of the season to be told by the league that we should register our two Middlesex allocated pros. Unfortunately this wasn’t a great success as the closest we got to an appearance was Ollie Rayner popping in to watch Hampstead v Southgate for an hour. The league is only stronger for the quantity of county players who’ve featured this season and it’s great to see them in action, however I’d question whether more structure to this allocation process could be achieved as is the case in some county premier leagues. I certainly envied the likes of Hornsey who got, Ireland on the park nine times, and Stanmore who rolled out Crook and the former West Indian International Collymore, not to mention having a certain M. R. Ramprakash up their sleeve – he’s not the worst coming in at three.

We can’t blame the toss, I won more than my share and Hornsey lost nearly all of them. The lesson there is that you shouldn’t place too much emphasis on things you can’t control. More often than not the better team will get the points.

There was an occasional glimmer and reaching the quarter-finals of the League Cup was great fun, especially knocking out Ealing with a scratch side away from home. It was such a shame that this was the one game where absolutely no one came to watch us, presumably our loyal band of followers were fearing the worst!

This leads me to a sincere note of thanks for the regular supporters who come along and watch us every week, they really haven’t had much to cheer this year. I knew our demise at home against Stanmore was a genuine low point when I heard Ron the Postman exit stage right muttering something along the lines of “I’ve had enough of this s***!” I didn’t blame him.

I think the biggest support we’ve had this season has been from our scorer, Andrew Parkin, who has stuck by us throughout and done a thoroughly professional job. Andrew has been a terrific help this year and I speak for all of the players in saying a huge thank you to him for doing a terrific job.

Off the field there has also been some brilliant work done by Jeremy and Peter on the refurbishment of the score box and the memorabilia room, and I’d like to thank all those involved in the running of the club specifically Ricky Gunn, Paul Lassman and Ron ‘the Bugle’ Hewit for their hard work once again.

SCC 2012 Season Review 16

We’ve had some good individual displays and it’s been particularly encouraging to see the young talents of Dunnett, Edrich and Sivarajah on display this year. I very much hope to see each of them forging long careers with the club.

Now is definitely the time to look to the future development of this great club and plan not just next season but for the next five and beyond as there is much to be done to put us back on the map. I’d urge everyone to get stuck in and play a part. RAJ

Congratulations …

SCC 2012 Season Review 24

Southgate Colts

2012 proved to be enormously frustrating, with terrible weather bringing about training and match cancellations, and in the case of cup games, re-selection, re- notifying, and further cancellations. The number of active colts between the ages of 8 and 15 totalled 90. The added assistance of newly qualified coaches Mark Hughes and Will Temple considerably relieved the pressure on the established vanguard although we have lost the services of John Williams through aging limbs but whose contribution over a great many years has been very much appreciated by both the colts and the club itself. The lack of match managers continues to put a heavy burden on those running the three competitive age groups but Adrian Carr stepped in admirably by taking control of the Under 11s. Middlesex East Area Colts competitions Under 15s A lot of responsibility fell on the only four 15 year-olds at the senior colt end of the club. The appalling weather permitted only five league matches to be played plus a 30-over-a-side friendly against Southgate Compton. The principal run scorer was Alfie Packer who scored a belligerent 51 at Winchmore Hill and 88 not out against Southgate Compton. Thanks largely to those two innings, Alfie compiled 189 runs at an average of 37.80. The second highest run-scorer was Mustapha Mirza with 80 at 26.66. Wickets were harder to come by. However, Niroosh Sugumaran bowled 23 overs and took 7 for 49, average 7.00, and Callum Silva took 8 for 102 in 25.1 overs at an average of 12.75. With the limited opportunities offered in the colts’ league this year, the chance to increase experience came with adult matches. Callum Silva, Will Dias and Niroosh Sugumaran played regularly though Alfie Packer disappointingly only once. Mustapha Mirza, at 14, also played with increasing maturity in the adult game towards the end of the season. Against adult oppositions and invariably opening the bowling, Niroosh took a further 14 wickets to take his season’s tally for the club to 21 wickets at a remarkably low average of 10.33, to win him the 2012 Southgate Colt of the Year award. Thomas Ireland’s regular commitment at weekly practice, combined with his excellent catching ability and marked improvement with the bat brought him the 2012 Endeavour Award for most improved Under 15s player. Ricky Gunn

Under 13s It was a very frustrating season with 7 of our scheduled 12 matches lost to bad weather. In the games which were played, a number of players made contributions. However, the side came 2nd to Cockfosters in Division 2.

Tom Clark played in all 5 games, bowling well and taking 6 wickets for 77 runs with best figures of 4 for 20 against Holtwhites. Ravi Martin was lively opening the bowling and took 5 wickets for 42 runs with a best of 2 for 6. James Dangerfield took 4 for 31 (bb 2-11) with Henry Thompson and William McArdle taking two wickets apiece. However, the leading wicket taker was Ishaan Verma with 8 for 37 including 4 for 4 against Holtwhites. He played in all 5 games and made good progress with his off-spin for which he was awarded the Under 13s Endeavour prize.

SCC 2012 Season Review 25

In terms of batting, we generally struggled and were reliant on Christian McLoughlin and James. James scored 48 runs at an average of 24 including 22 not out against Cockfosters and Christian 78 runs with a best of 27 against Holtwhites. Joe Lisamore also batted well having fought his way into the team. For his all-round contribution, captaining, keeping wicket and scoring most runs, Christian was awarded the Under 13s Performance prize.

I would like to thank all the players who were involved in the Under 13s last season, particularly those not mentioned above, who always showed their commitment to the team, despite not having too many opportunities to contribute with bat and ball. Thanks also to Carmi Le Roux, our overseas player who lent valuable assistance to the group, and to all the parents (and grandparents) for their support.

Fingers crossed for a drier 2013!! Jeremy Dangerfield

Under 11s With only one win in six games played out of 10 league fixtures, the Under 11s came last out of 6 in Division One and became the first Southgate side to be relegated in 2012, their only win coming against Old Elizabethans Barnet. Whilst it was disappointing that the dismal weather restricted the season to just five of the scheduled fixtures plus a specially arranged match against the touring Magdalen College, the spirit amongst the players remained high and a thoroughly enjoyable season was had with all of the boys making many new friends. Although the results generally went against us it should be considered that the season was, for several of our players, a first introduction to cricket whereas many of our opponents had already played at their clubs for two or three years. Certainly I identified enough talent within the squad to confidently predict that this will come to the fore as they continue to play more cricket over the coming years. Whilst all of the players can feel proud of their contributions, special mention should be made of the following. Devin the captain who is a very talented all-rounder and scored a brilliant 27 not out against a strong Magdalen College School. Shanuk may have been disappointed by his lack of runs but partly made up for this by taking 4-10 to win the match against OE Barnet. Harshil and Shrey shared a very mature partnership (broken only by being retired) to help post a winning score against OE Barnet. Of the two Toms, Stanton is another very talented cricketer particularly with the bat and Parsons is developing into a very reliable opening bowler. Finally I must mention Chris's fielding, which for youngsters is often a much neglected part of their game. The highlight of the season was of course the solitary victory against OE Barnet. The boys had until that point in the season thought primarily of their own performances but the victory suddenly focused their minds on team spirit and unity which is what it really is all about. Dev wins the Performance Prize and Tom Parsons the Endeavour Prize. Good luck to you all in 2013. Adrian Carr

Under 10s The Under 8 to Under 10 section thrived under Doug Gordon’s supervision with the valuable energetic support of Mark Hughes and Will Temple. Many of the Year 5s will be needed to augment the Under 11 side in 2013 and their grounding at this basic level will be invaluable to them as they engage competitive cricket for the first time. Tom Stanton in particular performed SCC 2012 Season Review 26 well in the Under 11 league games in 2012 and his experience will put him in good stead to lead the side in the coming season.

Colts Awards 2012 Very disappointingly, the annual The Colts Supper and Awards Evening had to be cancelled because of insufficient numbers being available to attend on the night. Although the event has been held at a similar time for very many years (well exceeding my 12 years of colts involvement) it may be time to ring some changes to suit the needs of today. Awards were nevertheless individually presented to the following young players: Performance: Endeavour: Under 15 Niroosh Sugumaran Under 15 Thomas Ireland Under 13 Christian McLoughlin Under 13 Ishaan Verma Under 11 Devin Dhanki Under 11 Thomas Parsons Under 10 Thomas Stanton Christian McLoughlin and Mustapha Mirza were awarded their Southgate Club caps.

A big “thank you” on behalf of the club to all those helping with the colts and to those parents who offer encouragement and appreciation on and off the field. The Colts section is vital to the club in two particular ways: it provides valuable revenue to keep the club going but more than that, it ensures a succession of experienced young players without whom there would be no club to sustain.
