    GALE Phase 3 Arabic Broadcast News Speech Part 1 1. Introduction GALE Phase 3 Arabic Broadcast News Speech Part 1 contains approximately 132 hours of Arabic broadcast news speech collected in 2007 by the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC), MediaNet, Tunis, Tunisia and MTC, Rabat, Morocco during Phase 3 of the DARPA GALE program. Broadcast audio for the DARPA GALE (Global Autonomous Language Exploitation) program was collected at LDC’s Philadelphia, PA USA facilities and at three remote collection sites: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong (Chinese); Medianet (Arabic); and MTC (Arabic). The combined local and outsourced broadcast collection supported GALE at a rate of approximately 300 hours per week of programming from more than 50 broadcast sources for a total of over 30,000 hours of collected broadcast audio over the life of the program. The broadcast news recordings in this release feature news broadcasts focusing principally on current events from the following sources: Abu Dhabi TV, a television station based in Abu Dhabi, Al Alam News Channel, based in Iran; Al Arabiya, a news television station based in Dubai; Al Iraqiyah, an Iraqi television station; Aljazeera , a regional broadcaster located in Doha, Qatar; Al Ordiniyah, a national broadcast station in Jordan; Dubai TV, a broadcast station in the United Arab Emirates; Kuwait TV, a national broadcast station in Kuwait; Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, a Lebanese television station; Nile TV, a broadcast programmer based in Egypt, Saudi TV, a national television station based in Saudi Arabia; and Syria TV, the national television station in Syria. 2. As the country begins developing its version of that economy, the mediated, transparent environment fundamental to this process will carry with it new visions of (and possibilities for) living life. If peaceful change is to be achieved, a transitional generation faces the conundrum of adapting the best that modernity can offer while retaining the best of tradition. As have others, this study suggests two things: that (1) media literacy, growing in part from education, is correlated with urbanization and a changing infrastructure, and that (2) media in all its forms is inseparable from the outcome of this drive to modernization. Introduction A simple way to look at culture is as a roadmap to life that facilitates the capacity to survive and adapt to an environment. Passing along shared traditions, myths, legends, ceremonies, and rituals, among other things, culture helps create shared realities. This reality is created, shaped, modified, and preserved through communication. At some moment in time, ancient forms of associations, politics, and entertainment conducted by storytelling through speech were overlaid with reading and writing, the habits of print literacy. Today that storytelling has become intertwined with electronic habits that require a newer literacy.

Close up on Austyn, a slightly tubby editor (with boyish good looks and a roguish charm). He is terrified. His palms are sweating, he is shaking a little. He holds a pen tightly but is not writing. In front of him is a blank piece of paper. This was where I found myself towards the end of our Future of Video Breakfast Briefing last week. I had just been asked to write my first ever advertising pitch. I write about this stuff all the time, but I’ve never had to do it in the flesh. It was part of YouTube’s workshop about how to produce Ramadan content that would do well on that platform. The – mercifully imaginary – brief was the launch of a new television channel, Hala, with programming focus on comedy, drama and romance. Each table in the workshop had to come up with a YouTube web series that would promote this channel. And my mind was blank. Luckily, I was surrounded by less blank, brighter and more imaginative people and we finally came up with Iftar vs. Iftar, a cooking show that pitches millennial couples against their parents and parents-in-law. Some dishes are traditional, some are modern. Like Hala, it shows how tradition and modernity can exist side-by-side.
