Dear Parents We would like to introduce you to the programme of weekend activities planned for the Michaelmas Term for the Upper School. Looking back, the Summer Term was an incredibly busy one and highlights include clay pigeon shooting, a neon disco, learning to cook an array of different dishes as well as a great trip to Thorpe Park! We hope you enjoy seeing what the girls are up to on our social media and through our e-newsletters. We regularly meet with the girls in our student forums and together we have put together a diverse and engaging programme of events. I hope there is something for everyone, including a trip to the O2 Academy to climb the roof of the largest indoor venue in London, socials with other schools, the opportunity to relax with a gong bath and lots of activities to be enjoyed in House. As ever, we strive to keep the costs of activities to a minimum, however, as you will notice, a few of the key events cost more than £30 and we will seek your agreement in advance for these. Your daughter will be able to sign up for events costing £30 or less on a weekly basis in House. However, if you do not wish your daughter to have this option, please confirm this in section 4, ‘Opt Out of House Sign-Up’ on the online booking form. Please do always get in touch with any feedback. We would love to hear what you or your daughter are enjoying and if there is anything different that you would like to see added to the weekend programme. Looking forward to welcoming the girls both new and those returning, back for a busy, exciting and challenging term ahead! Although in a village setting, it is only 5 miles outside the busy market town of Newbury and is well positioned for easy access to the M4 motorway, London and Heathrow Airport. School Description Downe House was established as a girls’ boarding school in 1907 by the first Headmistress, Miss Olive Willis, who wished to promote educational excellence within a relaxed but structured framework, which enabled girls to flourish through innovative teaching and an environment where mutual respect between staff and pupils was highly valued and pursued. The School’s first home was Down House in the village of Downe, Kent – formerly the home of Charles Darwin. The School outgrew the house so Olive Willis bought ‘The Cloisters’ in Berkshire and the School moved to its current location in Cold Ash in 1921. ‘The Cloisters’ are still at the heart of the School and consist of a white arched walkway linking many of the classrooms and the School Chapel. There are also a number of newer buildings and modern facilities including a purpose built performing arts centre, sports hall, languages resource centre and administration building. More improvements are planned as part of the Ten Year Vision for the School. Downe House is set in a peaceful location of 110 acres of wooded grounds.
