The event is one of the oldest speedway championships in the world – the first title being held during the inaugural season at the Claremont Speedway. The date was Saturday November 26, 1927 and saw three heats over 2 miles (5 laps) that were won by Ted Kinnear (Indian), Sig Schlam (BSA) and Charlie Datson (Harley Davidson). The report in "The West Australian" newspaper stated:- "The final promised to be thrilling, and so it was. Schlam gained the jump out from the gun, but Kinnear sprang a surprise by chasing and heading him. His advantage was short lived, however, for Datson darted through on the inside as they passed the stand for the first time, and established a lead of 12 yards from Schlam, who was just in front of Kinnear. With three quarters of the second lap cov- ered, and while the riders were travelling at a great rate, Datson came off, and Schlam went on to win comfortably from Kinnear." Two local heroes – Mick McKeon and Glenn Doyle – have both won the WA title on six occasions Chum "The Master" Taylor was a five times state champion In the 2017-18 title we saw Cameron Heeps score his fourth success. Three times victors have been Steve Johnston, Guy Wilson and Frank Smart. Overseas winners of the state title are Arthur Atkinson (England), Ken McKinlay (Scotland), five-times World Champion Ove Fundin (Sweden), six-times World Champion Ivan Mauger (New Zealand), Simon Cross (England), Rob Woffinden (England) and his son Tai – a three-times World Champion – who won here in the summer of 2019. The Interstate victors have been Aub Lawson (NSW), Corey Gathercole (Victoria) and Chris Holder (NSW), who was the 2012 World Make Smoking History Pinjar ParkChampion. is a smoke free venue, please do not smoke in the venue 5 PINJAR PARK SPEEDWAY MAIN PROGRAM Heat Class Red Blue White Yellow 50cc Final 40 250cc Demo 41 Final 250cc Sidecar 42 Final 110cc Final 43 125cc B Final 44 125cc A Final 45 Main Event Heat Class Red Blue White Yellow Green Pos 6 40 250cc SOLO Luke Killeen Colby Mason Jack McDiarmid 41 500cc SOLO Daniel Winchester Lincoln Worroll Bryan Miller Declan Killeen Kobee Ziedas 42 500cc SOLO Frank Smart Desmond Heys Matt Marson Jarryd Ziedas Jason Marzoli DARREN NASH / Jack Fewster / Jeffery Bishop / Steven Sutherland / 43 SIDECARS Ash Shield Steve McQueen Chromie Holmwood Matty Mauger Mark Drew / Stephen McMurray / Reece Thomas / Daniel Bishop / 44 SIDECARS Matt Young Jayson Williams Jesse Thomas Juston Winchester 45 Flat Track Jai Davis James Keen Scott Townson Brian Watson Mick Godbold Scott Bartlett Heat Class Red Blue White Yellow Green Pos 6 46 250cc SOLO Colby Mason Jack McDiarmid Luke Killeen 47 500cc SOLO Kobee Ziedas Jason Marzoli Desmond Heys Matt Marson Lincoln Worroll 48 500cc SOLO Declan Killeen Bryan Miller Frank Smart Daniel Winchester Jarryd Ziedas Jeffery Bishop / Steven Sutherland / Daniel Bishop / Mark Drew / 49 SIDECARS Chromie Holmwood Matty Mauger Juston Winchester Matt Young Jack Fewster / DARREN NASH / Stephen McMurray / Reece Thomas / 50 SIDECARS Steve McQueen Ash Shield Jayson Williams Jesse Thomas 51 Flat Track Scott Bartlett Mick

Part 11: 1957- 58 SEASON The 1957/58 South African speedway league season turned out to be a two-horse-race between Pretoria Eagles and Durban Hornets, with the former eventually clinching the championship on race-points difference, after both finished with an identical record of five wins and one loss from their six official matches. The highlights were the two direct encounters between the Eagles and the Hornets, which both ended in a home win. On January 12, Durban won a thriller of a match by 51.5 points to 50.5 at their own Hoy Park circuit. Henry Long (14) and Roy Bowers (11) top scored for the Hornets, while Pretoria’s Swedish ace Olle Nygren recorded an 18 points maximum. Just three days later, on January 15, both teams met for the return match at Pretoria’s Speedway Stadium. This time the Eagles beat the Hornets in another close match, keeping the title chase still undecided. For the record and to give an idea of the line-up’s of that year’s top two teams. Here are the points score details of the Pretoria match: PRETORIA Eagles (52): Olle Nygren 18, Trevor Redmond 15, Howdy Cornell 8, Claude Warne 6, Jimmy Scott 3, Charlie Branders 2. DURBAN Hornets (49): Henry Long 13, Neil Mortimer 11, Roy Bowers 11, Gerry Hickson 5, Aubrey Long 4, Vern McWilliams 3, Graham White 2. By the end of February, all but one of the league matches had been completed and Pretoria sat on top of the league table. Durban Hornets, with one match in hand, needed to beat the East Rand Stars by a margin of 8 or more to put themselves on top, but only managed a tight 50-48 win against the men from Springs, which kept Hornets in second place to the Eagles in the league’s final standings.

  • Dream Team : Paul
Dream Team : Paul Always been a Wimbledon supporter since I was a kid. My mum and dad took me there for the first time in 1953 when I was five years old (you work out how old I am!!!!) Fundin Nygren Ove Fundin The fastest gater of his day. There was no-one around with his gating skills and aggression during the late 50's and to the mid sixties, he was the man to beat! Ronnie Moore The Wimbledon number one rider for over 10 years during the 50's & 60's. He was totally unflappable and could read a track situation like no-one else. An amazing team captain. Peter Craven The total unorthodox style and determination of this tiny guy was unbelievable. He could throw a bike into a bend with total disregard for his safety. Where other riders would be slowing for the corner, he'd be accelerating past them and winning races through sheer courage! Ivan Mauger No-one but a fool would leave this guy out! Maybe the fastest gater there's ever been. Once the tapes went up he was usually 10 yards in front before the others had let go of the clutch! I would have loved to have seen him and Ove Fundin gate together. Nigel Boocock An all rounder of all the best things in a rider. He could gate quickly, corner immaculately, win from the back (especially on the final bend) and team ride wonderfully. Olle Nygren The first of the flying Swedes! Was always trying to win (by fair means or foul!) but would never give up on a race even if he was 50 yards behind on the final bend! Ron Howe Mr reliability! He never became a star, because you could only have one in a team and Ronnie Moore was Wimbledon's, but he could team ride better than anyone else could ever dream of! .

Veškerou použitou literaturu a další podkladové materiály uvádím v přiloženém seznamu literatury. V Praze, dne ......................................... , Podpis autora: ..................................................................... - 2 - Poděkování V první řadě bych chtěl poděkovat za vedení absolventské práce Romanu Bradáčovi, který se ke mně neotočil zády ani přes svoji výraznou časovou vytíženost. Velký dík patří předsedovi plochodrážního svazu české republiky Petru Moravcovi, který mi umožnil přístup do klubového archívu AMK Zlatá přilba Pardubice a zapůjčením vlastních dokumentů mě správně navedl. V praktické i teoretické části pomocí výpovědí plochodrážních expertů a odborné literatury. Výsledek práce ukázal, že hlavní příčina českých neúspěchů v závodu o Zlatou přilbu města Pardubic je hlavně ve změně podmínek po revoluci, s kterými se domácí jezdci nedokázali dobře vypořádat. Odborníci v současnosti poukazují na jediného českého závodníka, který by měl reálnou šanci závod vyhrát a pořadatelé se ztráty zájmu ze strany diváků nebojí.

Part 6: SIX AFRICAN TRACKS IN 1953/54 FOUR IN THE UNION – TWO IN RHODESIA IN spite of the wettest summer for a decade – there were many washouts – speedway increased in popularity in the Union. As weeks rolled by more and more cities clamoured for tracks, suitable venues being the only obstacle to a wild-fire spread of the sport. Supporters clubs, on British lines, grew apace and hero worship reached an all-time high. The knights of the cinder circuits were quite as well known in the Transvaal as the players of any of the other major spectator sports. In fact in the mid-1950‘s only inter-provincial and international rugby had a larger and more ardent following than speedway racing. Club rugby, soccer and cricket had been relegated to the ranks of the "also-rans“ where numbers are concerned. An event which was to have a profound effect on Transvaal racing was the arrival of restless, ambitious Trevor Redmond in September. He went to work with a will and carved a track out of the virgin veldt at Springs on the Far East Rand. Meetings went with a swing. Red-hot racing, unexpected novelty turns plus managerial drive brought the customers in and by mid-season Redmond had hit the jackpot. Bob Quick, once a star rider, staged a come-back, this time as a promoter, and his snappy little stadium at Randfontein proved highly popular on the West Rand. Rain – and how it came down on Friday nights – was the spoil-sport at Wembley, Johannesburg. *** Main domestic competition was the National League won by Springs Stars from Wembley Lions.
