The event is one of the oldest speedway championships in the world – the first title being held during the inaugural season at the Claremont Speedway. The date was Saturday November 26, 1927 and saw three heats over 2 miles (5 laps) that were won by Ted Kinnear (Indian), Sig Schlam (BSA) and Charlie Datson (Harley Davidson). The report in "The West Australian" newspaper stated:- "The final promised to be thrilling, and so it was. Schlam gained the jump out from the gun, but Kinnear sprang a surprise by chasing and heading him. His advantage was short lived, however, for Datson darted through on the inside as they passed the stand for the first time, and established a lead of 12 yards from Schlam, who was just in front of Kinnear. With three quarters of the second lap cov- ered, and while the riders were travelling at a great rate, Datson came off, and Schlam went on to win comfortably from Kinnear." Two local heroes – Mick McKeon and Glenn Doyle – have both won the WA title on six occasions Chum "The Master" Taylor was a five times state champion In the 2017-18 title we saw Cameron Heeps score his fourth success. Three times victors have been Steve Johnston, Guy Wilson and Frank Smart. Overseas winners of the state title are Arthur Atkinson (England), Ken McKinlay (Scotland), five-times World Champion Ove Fundin (Sweden), six-times World Champion Ivan Mauger (New Zealand), Simon Cross (England), Rob Woffinden (England) and his son Tai – a three-times World Champion – who won here in the summer of 2019.
