THE CULTURE OF DIVERSITY AND MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING IN ARAB ISLAMIC THOUGHT DURING THE “CLASSICAL AGE” Said Bensaid al Alaoui I – Introduction he “Classical Age” – in the sense that we use the term – refers to the period between the birth Tof Arab Islamic culture and the stage when it reached the pinnacle of its power and prosperity. Today we usually describe it as the “Arab Islamic heritage”. When we consider that heritage, we find that – regardless of how dynamic and productive it has been at certain times during the course of its existence – we are unable to place it in a particular historical period. For example, while we can say that “’Asr al Tadris” (the “Age of Scholarship”) saw the birth and burgeoning of numerous branches of Islamic knowledge – all of them related to the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (particularly Hadith) – it would also be true to say that numerous other sciences associated with the Islamic heritage did not reach their zenith until later, when they began to emerge fully fledged in various parts of the Islamic world. Against the Heteronomy of Halakhah: Hermann Cohen’s Implicit Rejection of Kant’s Critique of Judaism George Y. Kohler* “Moses did not make religion a part of virtue, but he saw and ordained the virtues to be part of religion…” Josephus, Against Apion 2.17 Hermann Cohen (1842–1918) was arguably the only Jewish philosopher of modernity whose standing within the general philosophical developments of the West equals his enormous impact on Jewish thought. Cohen founded the influential Marburg school of Neo-Kantianism, the leading trend in German Kathederphilosophie in the second half of the nineteenth and the first decade of the twentieth century. Marburg Neo-Kantianism cultivated an overtly ethical, that is, anti-Marxist, and anti-materialist socialism that for Cohen increasingly concurred with his philosophical reading of messianic Judaism. Cohen’s Jewish philosophical theology, elaborated during the last decades of his life, culminated in his famous Religion of Reason out of the Sources of Judaism, published posthumously in 1919.1 Here, Cohen translated his neo-Kantian philosophical position back into classical Jewish terms that he had extracted from Judaism with the help of the progressive line of thought running from * Bar-Ilan University, Department of Jewish Thought. 1 Hermann Cohen, Religion der Vernunft aus den Quellen des Judentums, first edition, Leipzig: Fock, 1919. Open Theology 2017; 3: 117–133 Open Access Brian McKinlay* Revelation in Nicolas Berdyaev’s Religious Philosophy DOI 10.1515/opth-2017-0009 Received June 6, 2016; accepted December 1, 2016 Abstract: Nicolas Berdyaev’s understanding of the self-revelation of God to humankind is a point of connection between the central ideas of his religious philosophy. Berdyaev says that God’s self-revelation occurs within the inner person, through divine-human spiritual cooperation, bringing about a revolutionary transformation of the human consciousness. Yet, the degree to which revelation can occur depends on human spiritual development. The eschatological culmination of this development will be the revelation of God in humankind and humankind in God—fulfilling the Godmanhood of Christ. The content of revelation is the Truth that is Godself, expressed in relational knowledge of God. Revelation occurs as an activity of divine-human cooperation. It is affected by human limitations and must be open to critique, particularly to purge from it human categories of dominance, power and enslavement. Truth is its own criterion, but in sobornost there is a sense of communal discernment. Only in freedom may revelation and truth may be found. Yet the self-revelation of God is a point of connection between central ideas of Berdyaev’s religious philosophy. To approach Berdyaev’s concept of revelation, one must look at his ideas on truth, freedom, spirit, knowledge, objectification, the human subject and the very nature of God. -

Taylor Marquette University This article explicates Averroes's understanding of human knowing and abstraction in this three commentaries on Aristotle's De Anima. While Averroes's views on the nature of the human material intellect changes through the three commentaries until he reaches is famous view of the unity of the material intellect as one for all human beings, his view of the agent intellect as 'form for us' is sustained throughout these works. In his Long Commentary on the De Anima he reveals his dependence on al-Farabi for this notion and provides a detailed critique of the Farabian notion that the agent intellect is 'form for us' only as agent cause, not as our true formal cause. Although Averroes argues that the agent intellect must somehow be intrinsic to us as our form since humans 2tieper se rational and undertake acts of knowing by will, his view is shown to rest on an equivocal use of the notion of formal cause. -

Equipped with proficiency in the Arabic language, students explore the rich literary, cultural, and religious traditions of the Arab world. Fields of study The department offers two fields of study: • Arabic Language and Literature—acquaints students with the various historical periods in Arabic literature and linguistics. -

Rational option was the most suitable for Arab Muslim civilization as it expresses the vitality of civilization and its ability to interact with other contemporary civilizations and trends. Islamic philosophy interpretation themes are various as they adopted the following terms: 1. Interpreting the approval of the Greek philosophy in Muslim culture. 2. Interpreting the relationship between religion and philosophy. 3. Interpreting the relationship between Mind and Mind ( Plato and Aristotle ) 4. Interpreting the relationship between nature and Metaphysics. The goals of interpretation for Muslim philosophers are different as Al Kind pointed that they are oriented towards the Greek philosophy in general and towards religion and philosophy in particular while Al Farabi pointed that they are oriented towards the Greek philosophy in general and towards Plato and Aristotle. -

We ask questions such as: what do I, as an individual, control in my life? To what extent does a supreme being know what I will do? İslâmî İlimler Dergisi, Yıl 12, Cilt 12, Sayı 2, Güz 2017 (145/178) MU‘tazılı TRENDS ıN JEwıSH THEOLOGY - A BRıEF SURVEY David SKLARE* Abstract This article presents a brief survey of Jewish Mu‘tazilism, from its begin- nings in the late eighth or early ninth century through the seventeenth century. Short descriptions of known Jewish Mu‘tazilî authors and their works are provided. We can divide the development of Jewish Mu‘tazilism into three periods: 1) the early period characterized by eclecticism and doctrinal variety; 2) the “classic” period in which the Basran Bahshamiyya school was adopted by both Rabbanites and Karaites; 3) the late period in which epitomes of Mu‘tazilî thought were produced. The article concludes with a brief consideration of Mu‘tazilism in al-Andalus. Keywords: Mu’tazila, Jewish Theology, Jewish Mu’tazilism, Basra, Kara- ites. Tanınmış Yahudi Mu’tezilî yazarlar ve onlara ait eserler de çalışmada kısaca tanıtılmıştır. Yahudi Mu’tezililiğinin gelişimini 3 devreye ayırabiliriz: 1) Eklektizm ve doktrin çeşitliliğiyle karakterize edilebilecek olan erken dönem; 2) Basra Bahşamiyye ekolünün Rabbinikler ve Karaylar tarafından benimsendiği “klasik” dönem; 3) Mu’tezile düşüncesinin somut örneklerinin üretildiği geç dönem. JISMOR 15 Book Review Jews and Judaism by Hiroshi Ichikawa (Iwanami Shoten, 2019) Toshihiro Horikawa This book summarizes 40 years of work by its author, Professor Hiroshi Ichikawa. It also presents findings from the discovery of 1st-century synagogue ruins in the region of Galilee, made in the summer of 2016 in the course of archeological excavations in Israel that Ichikawa has joined for 30 years. In the 1980s, the assertion of his Israeli teacher that “Japan’s prosperity will not last long,” struck a chord with him and made him realize how the Jews, who were forced to live in pagan lands, keenly observed the societies they lived in and prepared themselves for the adversities that awaited them. From this, he surmised that “Maybe we can learn something from the Jews in figuring out our own future, because they had become stronger by recognizing their weaknesses, and had victoriously lived through many harsh realities” (p. ii). He wrote this book in the hope that the modern generation could gain inspiration about living from the lives of the Jews. This book begins with an introductory chapter on “who is a Jew?” followed by four chapters taking up Jewish history, faith, studies, and society. The author provides a comprehensive discussion on the life of the Jews and on Judaism itself from these four perspectives. The introductory chapter defines who the Jews are. The word “Jews” is “Yehudi” in Hebrew, which is referred to the people of the tribe of Judah from the latter half of the period of Solomon’s Temple until that of the Second Temple, or to the people living in the land of Judah as recounted in the Bible. -
