Toured this fall with - more dates to come Spent all summer and fall on tour with Bonnie Raitt EP released this past summer, full cd due in January Damien Rice: Returning to the role of Critics’ Darling “THE REAL EMO: Like the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle and the late Jeff Buckley, Damien Rice sings as though shepherding heart and soul through a world that means them nothing but harm. At the same time, Mr. Rice expresses unprotected emotions, embracing kisses and punches with equal ardor. That bruised quality isn’t exactly available on demand, which might explain the three- year gap between his debut album, O, and its follow-up, 9. HEART OF OAK: But Mr. Rice’s sensitivity contains an artistic core as solid as a weathered oak tree: The briskly strummed folk of “Coconut Skins” and the swelling orchestral-pop of “9 Crimes” recall Cat Stevens and Nick Drake. Even when Mr. Rice is at his plainest, the supporting musicians (with several holdovers from O, including counterpoint vocalist ) seem always ready to buoy him. Bestowed such good fortune in talent and colleagues, Mr. Rice sends grace through the longing and heartbreak of his music. BOTTOM LINE: Another elegant oscillation from blackest despair to brightest hope, and back again.” - Morning News

“Damien Rice rolls out another winner.” - NY Newsday

“When Damien Rice starts singing, it sounds like he just rolled out of bed after a sleepless night, slightly hoarse, a little remote, halfway between a dreaming and awakened state, between the certainty of unconsciousness and the confusion of the brightly-lit life. So unguarded and interior an approach pitches Rice’s music into a rare place. He has the command to bring listeners so far inside his experience it can be confusing: Is this our inner voice we’re hearing or his? Few singers ever get to so precious a spot. and Ray LaMontagne sometimes can. The young or the late Nick Drake never left it. No wonder Rice has inspired such rapture from those in the know. Three years ago, the Irish ’s first album, “O,” made him an international cult star. He earned extra juice from the placement of his music in Mike Nichols’ movie “Closer.” Rice’s songs held as crucial a spot in that narrative as Paul Simon’s had in Nichols’ 1967 film, “The Graduate.” For Rice’s second CD, “9,” the singer hasn’t changed his m.o. significantly. Why should he? He got it right the first time. Again, his arrangements prove as integral to the songs’ power as his subliminally potent singing. Aside from the usual guitar, bass and drums, Rice employs violin, viola and cello. Far from being merely sweet, the strings work as conspirators in the pain, sirens of longing. At irregular intervals, Rice brings in a second singer, Lisa Hannigan, to contrast his masculine mutters with her feminine cries. Rice’s songs seldom stay in one place long. They swing in mood, texture and volume, covering broad arcs of feeling. A cut like “The Animals Were Gone” goes from the most hesitant start to a full chorus to an unexpected finale: A wind tunnel of vocals funnels in with the sucking hollowness of loneliness itself. Rice’s lyrics work better delivered than read. But at his best, he can nip at the heels of ’s approach to romance in lines like “I love your depression/and I love your double chin/I love most everything you bring to this offering.” The words and music seldom pull any punches. “Me, My Yoke, and I” has the psychosexual mania of PJ Harvey. “Accidental Babies” presents a love triangle at the point of ultimatum. It’s dangerous-sounding music. But Rice delivers it like a dream.” - NY Post New Right Arm Resource website launches This week I launched the redesign of the Right Arm Resource website.
