The new species is distinguished by the evident apico- dorsal trichostele on the last tibia of both sexes and the gonopodal telopodite being particularly complex, quadripartite, consisting of the longest, mesal, suberect solenomere branch; a slightly shorter, similarly slender, acuminate endomere branch tightly appressed to the solenomere; a somewhat shorter, caudal, strongly curved, armed exomere process; and a very distinct, low, lateral, sac-shaped velum at their base. -

C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum. -

Notes on Maderesmus hoogstraali (Diplopoda: Polydesmida: Cryptodesmidae) and new locality record from Mexico Fabio Germán Cupul-Magaña1,* and Julián Bueno-Villegas2 Members of the millipede family Cryptodesmidae (Polydesmida) altitude 370 m; 3 —body length in mm/width of 10th tergite in mm: are small, “flattened” polydesmidans with horizontal paranota and a 9.75/1.79, 9.59/1.64, 9.57/1.59; 2—7.44/1.41, 7.39/1.35; specimens large collum covering much, most, or all of the head in dorsal aspect deposited in the Entomological Collection of the Centro de Estudios en (Hoffman et al. 2002). MYRIAPODOLOGICA Virginia Museum of Natural History Vol. 4, No.2 ISSN 0163-5395 June 15, 1996 THE MILLIPED GENUS UTADESMUS CHAMBERLIN & HOFFMAN (POLYDESMIDA: POLYDESMIDAE) Rowland M. Shelley ABSTRACT The milliped genus Utadesmus Chamberlin & Hoffman, superficially similar to the southeast Asian genus Pacidesmus Golovatch in the general telopodal configuration, consists of two allopatric species, U. henriensis (Chamberlin), the type species, known only &om the Henry Mountains, Utah, and U. hoffi Chamberlin & Hoffman, occurring some 250-345 mi (400-552 km) to the southeast in the San Mateo, Sandia, Manzano, Jimenez, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains and upper Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico. Populations primarily inhabit forests at high elevations on inselberg mountain ranges; they are absent &om the intervening desert lowlands. The species differ only in the configuration of the short endomerite, which is apically subacuminate in U. hoffi and sublinear in U. henriensis. The deserts of the southwestern United States are inhospitable to most millipeds, which require moisture and shelter for survival. Excepting the species of Orthoporus (Spirostreptida: Spirostreptidae) (Causey 197 5) and representatives of the families Atopetholidae (Spirobolida) and Schizopetalidae (Callipodida) (Loomis 1937, Hoffman & Orcutt 1960), few diplopods can survive the searing summer heat and aridity characteristic of American deserts. Other southwestern millipeds inhabit the cool, moist forests that occur chiefly at high elevations on inselberg mountain ranges. These woodlands constitute scattered "island" communities, as the intervening desert lowlands form impervious barriers to gene flow between the isolated montane populations. Numerous inselbergs occur in the southwest, and they are particularly abundant in the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range Physiographic Provinces. -

Their grouping with Gondwana, rather than with Laurasia is more consistent with the historical biogeography of Polydesmida as well as with distributional data from other millipedes. An area clado- gram for the families inside the suborder Polydesmidea has been worked out, and distributional data from the dif- ferent families are discussed. A divise informational analysis based on the distribution of the families inside the order Polydesmida gave the same conclusion as the area cladogram. 1. Introduction: Palaeomagnetic and many palaeogeographical papers have demonstrated that the World total land mass was made up of two gigantic continents in the Mesozoic period, viz. Laurasia and Gond- wana. Laurasia encompassed what was eventually to be North America and Eurasia. Gondwana in the course of time split into Antarctica, Australia, South America, Africa and India. Central and southern New Guinea is part of the same continent as Australia, and northern New Guinea was ac- creted during the Cenozoic. As regards Indochina, the Malayan peninsula and the Indonesian archipelago, most scholars have been of the opinion that they were parts of Laurasia during the late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic. -
