1.13 NEW ZEALAND’S GENETIC DIVERSITY NEW ZEALAND’S GENETIC DIVERSITY Dennis P. Gordon National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Private Bag 14901, Kilbirnie, Wellington 6022, New Zealand ABSTRACT: The known genetic diversity represented by the New Zealand biota is reviewed and summarised, largely based on a recently published New Zealand inventory of biodiversity. All kingdoms and eukaryote phyla are covered, updated to refl ect the latest phylogenetic view of Eukaryota. The total known biota comprises a nominal 57 406 species (c. 48 640 described). Subtraction of the 4889 naturalised-alien species gives a biota of 52 517 native species. A minimum (the status of a number of the unnamed species is uncertain) of 27 380 (52%) of these species are endemic (cf. 26% for Fungi, 38% for all marine species, 46% for marine Animalia, 68% for all Animalia, 78% for vascular plants and 91% for terrestrial Animalia). In passing, examples are given both of the roles of the major taxa in providing ecosystem services and of the use of genetic resources in the New Zealand economy. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Setoisenoton pallidus n. gen., n. sp. and Dysmicodesmus jeekeli n. gen., n. sp. occupy small ranges (<5000 km2) in the forests of northwest Tasmania. Both have a head+19 rings, metatergites lacking posterior corner extensions, and long, rigid gonopod telopodites reaching at least to legpair 4 when retracted. S. pallidus resembles Notonesiotes aucklandensis Johns, 1970 from the subantarctic Auckland Islands, but differs in gonopod details. D. jeekeli is unusual in the Tasmanian dalodesmid fauna in having basally fused telopodites. Key words: Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Dalodesmidae, Australia, Tasmania Introduction In five species of small dalodesmid Polydesmida from northwest Tasmania with a head+19 body rings (H+19), males have unusually long gonopod telopodites, reaching at least to legpair 4 when retracted. Three of these species, in the genus Ginglymodesmus Mesibov, 2005, have a midlength pseudo-articulation in the telopodite which allows the distal portion to flex anteriorly (Mesibov 2005). The fourth and fifth species both have rigid, straight telopodites and are here described and placed in new genera. One of the new species superficially resembles Notonesiotes aucklandensis Johns, 1970, a dalodesmid from the subantarctic Auckland Islands. The second new species superficially resembles species in the dalodesmid genus Tasmaniosoma Verhoeff, 1936. Methods 'Male' and 'female' in the text refer to stadium 7 adults. -

JEEKEL Instituut voor Taxonomische Zoölogie (Zoölogisch Museum), Amsterdam ABSTRACT. — Description of Orthorhachis pallida nov. gen., nov. spec. (Dalodesmidae) from southeastern Queensland. The genus appears to be related most closely to Gephyrodes- mus Jeekel, 1983, from Victoria, and Queenslandesmus Verhoeff, 1924, from northern Queensland, but is well characterized by the structure of the gonopods. Introduction The polydesmoid species described in the present paper is part of a collection of millipedes obtained by the author and his wife during a trip through eastern Australia and Tasmania in 1980 (Jeekel, 1981). Records of non-paradoxosomatid Polydesmida from Australia are still extremely scarce. They were enumerated in the cited publication and concern Paurodesmus acutangulus Cham¬ berlin, 1920, and Queenslandesmus sjoestedti Verhoeff, 1924, from the Cairns region, northern Queensland, Agathodesmus steeli Silvestri, 1910, from Avoca, New South Wales, and Lisso- desmus martini (Carl, 1902) and the recently described Gephyrodesmus cineraceus Jeekel, 1983, from Victoria. Until recently all Australian Polydesmida not belonging to the Paradoxosomatidae were pre¬ sumed to belong to the family Dalodesmidae (Jeekel, 1981). However, a careful reconsidera¬ tion of the descriptions of the Tasmanian polydesmoids has recently lead to the conclusion that some genera are to be excluded from the Dalodesmidae and may find their proper place in the family Haplodesmidae (Jeekel, in press). With regard to the genera mentioned above, there is no doubt that Queenslandesmus, Lisso- desmus and Gephyrodesmus are true Dalodesmidae. The same probably applies to the enigma¬ tic genus Paurodesmus. -

The new species is distinguished by the evident apico- dorsal trichostele on the last tibia of both sexes and the gonopodal telopodite being particularly complex, quadripartite, consisting of the longest, mesal, suberect solenomere branch; a slightly shorter, similarly slender, acuminate endomere branch tightly appressed to the solenomere; a somewhat shorter, caudal, strongly curved, armed exomere process; and a very distinct, low, lateral, sac-shaped velum at their base. -

The new species is distinguished from all other Tasmanian and Victorian Lissodesmus species by a unique combination of gonopod telopodite features: solenomere without a pre-apical process, tibiotarsus Y-shaped, femoral process L-shaped with forked tips, prefemoral process with a long comb of teeth below an irregularly dentate apical margin, and a roughened “shoulder process” near the base of the prefemoral process. ZooKeys 966: 1–8. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.966.56308 Abstract Kebodesmus zonarius gen. nov. et sp. nov. is only known from a small area on the Great Western Tiers in northern Tasmania, Australia, and like species of Paredrodesmus Mesibov, 2003 has no detectable paranota on the diplosegments. The gonopod telopodite of the new species is divided into a large, lateral, cowl-like structure, a solenomere and a medial branch with three processes. Keywords Australia, Dalodesmidae, Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Tasmania Introduction The millipede described below is locally abundant and lives in easily accessed forest close to a major road. Nevertheless, it was overlooked in repeated faunal sampling in the area by the senior author and others until its discovery in 2019 during a flora and fauna survey conducted by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, Tas- mania. Relationships of the new species are currently being studied using molecular genetic methods (Rodriguez et al., in prep.), as neither the gonopod structure nor the non-sexual character states suggest an affinity with any previously described Tasmanian Dalodesmidae. -

C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum.
