- 1 - My fellow Kins

This Nance genealogy of Cornwall represents ail official Nans and Nance records and documents found since our first effort of our Cornish research which began early in 1967. Some recent discoveries tend to discredit certain old family traditions as published in certain Cornish History books which is the basis for some of my earlier conclusions that were expressed in past news letters. Therefore, I take this means to revise portions found to be in error in speculative correspondence with you during the years 1967, 1968 and 1969,

What I feel to be among our better late discoveries pertains to The Nance Family Arms. "I, Robert Cooke Esquire, Clarencieux, principal herlad of arms for service to their Prince or Country in peace or warre, do grant a coat of arms applied unto John Nance of the County of Cornwall. I find in the records of my office, armes belonging to that name and family, that is to say silver, a playne crosse humete sables, and for that I find no creast. I have given into him for his creast upon his healme an unicorn's head ermine ensuante out of a crowne horned mayned and bearded, gold mantle gule doubled silver as appeareth in the margin," Signed, February 5th. 1572 by Robert Cooke, Claren cieux, Roy Darmes.

Recor-ds show in several of the Burke's Books of Heraldry that this same arms without crest was awarded to Alexander Trengove, alias Nans. This list ing does not tell of services rendered to the crown, but shows him to have been knighted 1485 in the first year of his realm. Excepts from Cornish History say that at the conclusion of the War of Roses at the Battle of Bosworth where the forces of the under Henry Tudor were victorious over the House of York, after which Henry Tudor became Che new King of England and was proclaimed King Henry VII of England. He immediately knighted a number of his Cornish followers on the field at Bosworth. Thus it would appear that this is the start of the history of the Nance arms. Official records found concern ing Sir Alexander Nans states him to be Sir Alexander Nans of Trengove in Xllogan, and not Alexander Trengove, alias Nans, as quoted in Burke's.

The above document was worded by Robert Cooke, Esquire, principal Herald, and indicates that the original arms was given Co one of the name of Nance with the name Trengove not mentioned at all. Therefore, I can only conclude that published accounts of the Trengove, alias Nans, do not agree with the official records concerning when and who actually used the alias Trengove. The above John Nance, 1572, is the grandson of Sir Alexander Nans of Trengove in Illogan, and the only son of Henry Trengove Nance in Illogan. The records do not show the use of the Trengove alias until 1525 during the generation of the children of Alexander Nans. He appears Co have had at least four sons. Richard and Nicholas Nans continued to live in the tin mining districts of Menenge and Hundred of Kirrier, The other two sons, Ralph and Henry Trengove, used the name Nans alias, held lands in the tin districts, but officially resided in Illogan Parish at the two Nans estates of Trengove and Nans. Sons of these two Trengoves, Alias Nans of Illogan, namely John Richard Trengove, son of Ralph, and John Nance, son of Henry, were the sole male survivors of the Alex ander Nans branch, and it is at their generation level that the use of the alias was dropped. One assumed the single surname of Nance, and the other assumed the single surname of Trengove, This should explain that this alias was officially in use during one generation only, and not throughout the hist ory of the Nance family of Cornwall as given by the various published books of England and Cornwall. - 2 - MANOR HOUSES AND FARMS OF THE CORNISH NANCES

The following estates are known Nance properties, and in each case we find several generations of Nances as the occupants. In view of the fact that we have found no church records or Nance wills have been found prior to 1550, we must rely In some cases upon the o\^nershlp of common lands by later generations to establish the first two generations of our apparent pedigree. 3 - ROSECARNQN IN ST, KERVERNE PARISH

James Bevil, gentleman, mortgaged this and other property to Henry Trengove, Esquire, of Nans in Illogan, 1540. Henry Trengove, Esquire, of Nans in Illogan, foreclosed, 1543. John Nance as heir by law to his father Henry Trengove, and only son, inherited the entire Nance fortune in 1561. John Nance, Esquire, later in 1603 gave Rosecarnon to John Harry Nance, yoeman of Illogan Parish, wife Jane. (Said to be a grandson and the son of Richard Nance, born 1558 at Illogan died 1582 in St. Erth, and was referred to as Richard Nance of Trewynnard, wife Alice Harry who later married Thomas Chicose of St, Erth. She was the daughter of John Harry of Illogan Parish.) John Harry Nance (Referred to as John Harry alias Nance in Illogan) 1603. No Nances found at Rosecarnon after 1629, His children were Richard, baptised 1610, John born 1606, and William born 1612, Dorothy and Margery. This is said by some in Cornwall to be the Richard Nance who went to Virginia. Although some six years lapsed from birth to baptism, I am now told by those in authority in Cornwall that all child ren were not neccessarily baptised as infants and for various reasons, this could have been a late baptism.

TRENGOFF IN WARLEGGON PARISH John Nance. Esquire. 1652-1724, only child of Henry Nance, Jr., Esquire, and his wife Luce Hele.) As heir by law, he inherited the bulk of the Nance estate and fortune amassed by his great-great-grandfather, Henry Trengove, Esq. of Nans in Illogan in 1660 at the age of eight years. By the time he was 27 years old he had squandered his birthright, be come heavily in debt, forced to sell the many Nance properties includ ing Nance in Illogan, moved to Warleggon ca 1679, and apparently pur chased Trengoff, as this was never shown in previous records as being Nance property. He had five sons by his wife Dorothy Chester, all died without heirs. ^ John Nance. Jr., Esquire of Trengoff, born 1696, died 1772, first wife Elizabeth --- 7, second wife Mary Gooch, no children by either wife. The widow later married the Rev. Francis Cole. Vicar of Luxwallen Parish. At his wife's death the Rev. Cole as heir by law became the owner of Trengoff in Warleggon Parish. This was the last male of the Warleggon branch of the Nance family and the end of what was in 1556 one of the larger family fortunes in Cornwall.

NANCE PEDIGREES The earliest found use of the name thus far is Nicholas de Nans, wife Orengia. This name appeared in a 1241 deed but gave no , place called Nans, There was a Lucus de Nans of Lelant 1327, and a William Nans of St. Clement Parish 1327. We find several later Nances of record in both parishes, but several generations later.

i The Arundells were the richest fathily in Cornwall. The males of this line became extinct ca 1700. Trerise was considered to be one of the better built manor houses of Cornwall. Today it ill the state property and belongs to the National Trust. One can see by this genealogy the family has some royal con nections, as well as some of those at Ronnemeade at the signing of the Magna Charta 1215. i This concludes my report on Cornwall, 27 May 1970. j Sincerely yours, i P.dtC^CL.,--C<, M. NANCE FAMILY fflSTORY

CONTRIBUTED BY: Lee FREEMAN,229 A Cypress Mi! Road, Florence, AL 35630

The NANCE ancestors of the contributor came to what is now Franklin County at least by 1830 as shown by James NANCE's purchase of land in Section 19, Township 6 South, Range 11 West. This is a Federal record. From this date onward most NANCE records would be at the county level, unless there was military service. Unfortunately, the Franklin County Court House was burned more than once, the last time in 1890. There are census records, to be sure, and they provide considerable information beginning with the 1850 census. In order to learn more about the family's vital records, the contributor turned to local newspapers. From an 1855 newspaper, a NANCE obituary reports that James died in September 1855 at the age of 70. He further learned that James had had lived in the county for 30 years, thus arriving 5 years before he purchased land; this was an interesting bit offamily history. Continued perusal of newspapers(on microfilm in the Local History - Genealogy Room of the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library) yielded many more bits offamily history along with vital records information.

Although the Traveler rarely reports the history or genealogy of a single family, we have taken Mr. FREEMAN'S contribution as an example of what can be learned from newspapers. Certainly, we want the genealogical information but the more loosely constructed family information is just as valuable. Much family "history" comes down by word-of-mouth and sometimes a story shows up in some one of the official court records. But, we should not overlook newspapers. Often they do lead to official records - if no one has burned the courthouse - and often report the married names of daughters (in an obituary) that census records rarely do. Newspapers are excellent sources for non-official information, the "history" part of a family history. Do not stop your research with just one paper; examine every one that is available.

This work treats of that class of Fevers which constitute nine tenths of "Fever cases" afflicting the human family; and as it advocates a treatment entirely new and successful, and is designed and adapted more particularly forfamily use, it will be found to be a valuable and cheap medical work. A frill disclosure of the component parts of the celebrated Sappington's Anti- Fever Pills is given in this work, together with directions for making and using them on all occasions. DIED. At 2 O'clock Saturday the 20^ of January, little O'neal [sic] NANCE of Russellville, Ala. O'neal [sic] was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. NANCE. He was about four or five years old and like a flower was expanding into beauty of young boyhood. But Diptheria [5/c], the childrens [sic] enemy seized upon his little form and pressed fi"om it all the beauty of life, and left him a corpse. But the bright young spirit could not be corroded by the touch of disease, but it has gone to join the angels and be with him who said "suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven." Dry your eyes sorrowing ones, and remember that this angel boy may be hovering near you through life acting as your guardian spirit, pointing you to the better land. We are glad to hear that their second child is recovering from the same terrible disease. North Alabamian and Times, Friday, Feb 9, 1883, p. 3

SOUTHWORTH AND NANCE.— The advertisement of this long established and eminently reliable Memphis House appears in our new advertising column, and we take much pleasure in directing a [?] reference not only to the advertisement, but to the inducements offered our Merchants and Planters by Messrs. SOUTHWORTH & NANCE. Memphis is at our very doors, and the fact added to the certainty of quick sales of cotton and prompt returns, must surely act as an incentive to increase the North Alabama trade to the 'Bluff City.' More than this, Memphis boasts of North Alabamians as being of her leading and enterprising Merchants, and Messrs. SOUTHWORTH & NANCE are determined by most liberal advances, quick sales and small profits, to deserve a large share of the shipments from this section. MOUNTAIN TOM CLARK LEADER OF "THE BUGGERS"

In the turbulent years following the Civil War, when the court systems of Northwest Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee were struggling to maintain law and order in the recently war- ravaged Tennessee Valley, murderous gangs of guerillas and bushwhackers terrorized the countryside. Composed of enlisted men and deserters from both the Union and Confederate armies (many having enlisted and deserted both armies), these men were loyal to neither side, out only for power and personal profit. Of these gangs, the most notorious was the Clifton Shebang, known to Lauderdaie County residents as "The Buggers".

The acknowledged leaders of this gang were 2"** Lt. Elias THRASHER, of Co. B, 2"^* Tennessee Mounted Infantry, CSA, and Thomas "Tom" CLARK, a Confederate and Union deserter. CLARK received the nickname "Mountain Tom" and THRASHER was referred to as "That Man" THRASHER.

The first official record of Elias THRASHER, Tom CLARK and the Clifton Shebang comes from an 1865 Official Record report of Capt. Lot ABRAHAM of Co. D, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, USA. Reporting to his superior. Major E. B. BEAUMONT,about reports of robberies by Union troops stationed near Florence, Alabama, Capt. ABRAHAM stated: "Several citizens told me they believed most of the robbing had been done by men who were with Lieutenant THRASHER, or men from about Clifton [Tenn.]. They all say THRASHER is an honorable man, but blame him for having such men with him. Tom and Bishop CLARK, Tom DENNIS, Paul KETTY, Bill BRIDGES, and Pete GRIMES are the names of some of his party. A man calling himself PHILLIPS seems to be the worst character."^

With this report comes the first reference to the man who would become the scourge of Lauderdaie County, Alabama, and go down in history as an outlaw larger than life. To this day nearly every local resident knows the story of"Mountain" Tom CLARK, one of the leaders of the Buggers.

The next reference to Tom CLARK comes from the Florence Journal of Thursday, November 1,1866, p. 3: "SHOOTING AFFAIR. On last Monday evening, Mr. Thomas CLARK was
