Specialist periodical literature is scanned in full (as available at the libraries at ZSS and Z or received by the compilers). Also included is information supplied to the compilers direct. It is urgently requested that any reprints of papers not published in readily available botanical literature be sent to the compilers. — Validly published names are given in bold face type, accompanied by an indication of the nomenclatu- ral type (name or specimen dependent on rank), followed by the herbarium acronyms of the herbaria where the holotype and possible isotypes are said to be deposited (first acronym for holotype), accord- ing to Index Herbariorum, ed. 8 and supplements as published in Taxon. Invalid, illegitimate, or incor- rect names are given in italic type face. In either case a full bibliographic reference is given. For new combinations, the basionym is also listed. For invalid, illegitimate or incorrect names, the articles of the ICBN which have been contravened are indicated in brackets (note that the numbering of some regularly cited articles has changed in the Tokyo (1994) edition of ICBN). -

Mecistostethus contains six valid species: M. pilifer Marseul, M. loretoensis (Bruch), comb. n., M. seago- rum sp. n., M. carltoni sp. n., M. marseuli sp. n., and M. flechtmanni sp. n. The few existing records show the genus to be widespread in tropical and subtropical South America, from northern Argentina to western Amazonian Ecuador and French Guiana. Only a single host record associates one species with the ant Pachycondyla striata Smith (Formicidae: Ponerinae), but it is possible that related ants host all the species. -

(type species: E. kapleri sp. nov.) from Malaysia, Sabah is described, and its taxonomic placement is discussed. The current concept of the phylogeny and classification of Histeridae is critically examined. Based on cladistic analysis of 50 taxa and 29 characters of adult Histeridae a new hypothesis of phylogeny of the family is presented. In the concordance with the proposed phylogeny, the family is divided into three groups: Niponiomorphae (incl. Niponiinae), Abraeomorphae and Histeromorphae. The Abraeomorphae includes: Abraeinae, Saprininae, Dendrophilinae and Trypanaeinae. The Histeromorphae is divided into 4 subfamilies: Histerinae, Onthophilinae, Chlamydopsinae and Hetaeriinae. Hence, an aim to enrich the knowledge of this coleopteran family through a survey across different Lebanese regions in this work. Sev- enteen species belonging to the genera Atholus Thomson, 1859,Hemisaprinus Kryzhanovskij, 1976, Hister Linnaeus, 1758, Hypocacculus Bickhardt, 1914, Margarinotus Marseul, 1853, Saprinus Erichson, 1834, Tribalus Erichson, 1834, and Xenonychus Wollaston, 1864 were recorded. Specimens were sampled mainly with pitfall traps baited with ephemeral materials like pig dung, decayed fish, and pig carcasses. Several species were collected by sifting soil detritus, sand cascading, and other specialized techniques. Six newly recorded species for the Lebanese fauna are the necrophilous Hister sepulchralis Erichson, 1834, Hemisap- rinus subvirescens (Ménétriés, 1832), Saprinus (Saprinus) externus (Fischer von Waldheim, 1823), Saprinus (Saprinus) figuratus Marseul, 1855, and Saprinus (Saprinus) niger (Motschulsky, 1849) all associated with rotting fish and dung, and the psammophilousXenonychus tridens (Jacquelin du Val, 1853). -

Tishechkin3 Abstract Background: For more than a century we have known that a high diversity of arthropod species lives in close relationship with army ant colonies. For instance, several hundred guest species have been described to be associated with the Neotropical army ant Eciton burchellii Westwood, 1842. Despite ongoing efforts to survey army ant guest diversity, it is evident that many more species await scientific discovery. Results: We conducted a large-scale community survey of Eciton-associated symbionts, combined with extensive DNA barcoding, which led to the discovery of numerous new species, among them a highly specialized histerid beetle, which is formally described here. Analyses of genitalic morphology with support of molecular characters revealed that the new species is a member of the genus Nymphister. We provide a literature review of host records and host-following mechanisms of Eciton-associated Haeteriinae demonstrating that the new species uses an unusual way of phoretic transport to track the nomadic habit of host ants. Using its long mandibles as gripping pliers, the beetle attaches between the ants’ petiole and postpetiole. -

Description de Hypocacculus (Nessus) dyolofensis sp. n. et de Atholus hucheti sp. n.. Pactolinus latilabris (Lewis, 1911) est considérée comme une bonne espèce. Une variété nouvelle de Hister fossor Erichson, 1834 est décrite. Mots-clés: Coleoptera, Histeridae, nouvelles espèces, nouvelles localités, Sénégal. ABSTRACT - Contribution to the knowledge of Histeridae from Senegal (Insecta, Coleoptera). Notes and new localities of nineteen, mainly fimicolous, species from Senegal are given. Huchet (Bordeaux) m’a communiqué récemment l’ensemble de ses récoltes d’Histeridae réalisées au Sénégal en juillet 1996. Ce matériel, riche de 308 exemplaires, compte 16 espèces presque toutes coprophiles (fimicoles) qui précisent ainsi leurs répartitions locales données précédemment par les travaux de THÉROND (1966 et 1971). Deux espèces nouvelles, décrites ci-dessous, enrichissent par ailleurs la faune sénégalaise. A ce matériel très récent, j’ai ajouté l’étude de 93 exemplaires (6 espèces), provenant des récoltes, plus anciennes, de mes amis J. Etienne, H. Fongond (†) et R. Marthot ainsi qu’une partie de mes propres captures lors d’une escale à Dakar le 18 août 1968 de retour, par bateau, de l’île de la Réunion. -

S0N 1N0 Introduction A checklist of the beetles of Canada (Bousquet 1991) was published 20 years ago in order to provide a list of the species known from Canada and Alaska along with their correct names and a indication of their distribution by major political units (provinces, territories and state). A total of 7447 species and subspecies were recognized in this work. British Columbia and Ontario had the most diverse faunas, 3628 and 3843 taxa respectively, whereas Saskatchewan had a relatively poor fauna (1673 taxa) which was about two thirds that its neighbouring provinces (Alberta – 2464; Manitoba – 2351). This raises the question of whether the Canadian beetle fauna is distributed like a doughnut with a hole in the middle, or is there some other explanation. After assembling available literature records as well as the collection records available to us, we present a list of 2312 species (generally only single subspecies of a species are recognized in the province) suggesting that the Canadian distribution pattern of species is more like that of a Bismark, the dough may be a little thinner in the center but there is also a core of good things. This list was largely R. Hopper’s project. He collected Saskatchewan insects since at least the 1960’s and over the last decade before his death he had compiled a list of the species he had collected along with other records from the literature or given him by other collectors (Hooper 2001). -
