The volleyball team's runner-up finish tied the rifle program for the best national team placing on the year, STEVE while the women's outdoor track and field (fourth) and women's gymnastics (fifth) teams each finished in the top five. Individually, Nebraska student-athletes have flourished in recent years, including PEDERSON 37 Huskers earning 48 All-America certificates last season. Arturs Abolins won both Nebraska • 1980 the men's indoor and outdoor long jump national titles and Dace Ruskule won a title in the discus, while Kristina Fehlings (air rifle) rounded out the Huskers' trio of national • Athletic Director champions. I attended there in 1966-67 and was part of two National Championships in Track. 2001 American Football Monthly magazine gave me the title of “The Godfather of Strength and Conditioning” The Godfather on the cover Phoenix College weight room 2001 Jon Clanton became the first Husker to score over 1000 points and any of the six performance tests. His 1018 for his 3.97 Pro Agility Run remains the best ever on any test for a Husker. 2002 Epley commissioned Rivers Metal of Lincoln, NE. to develop eighteen Transformers exclusively for Nebraska. Randy Gobel worked closely with their engineers and added wood platforms to give Nebraska a tremendous advantage in safety and efficiency. No other school in the nation has anything that compares to the Transformer.

After the meeting minutes were unanimously approved, Lou announced that the rest of the meeting would be dedicated to a presentation by Athletic Director Steve Pederson. Lou then turned the meeting over to Steve. Athletic Department Review – Athletic Director Steve Pederson Steve began his presentation by noting that instead of the regular update on Fall sport seasons, he would instead present to the group an review of the past twelve years in University of Pittsburgh Panther athletics. Steve emphasized that the theme of the Athletic Department is “Only Big Dreams”, and noted the department’s mission to develop the best overall athletic program in the Big East Conference with an attitude that reflects the values of our University, the City of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Within the athletic department’s mission is a philosophy that while athletics is not the most important function on campus, it is important to the University’s mission, and therefore is an important part of the University community.

    The Glory Years 1981 The Huskers moved into the West Stadium Strength Complex located under the West stands. Nebraska merged the North weight room located in Schulte Field House with the Circuit room from the South Stadium into the West Stadium Strength Complex. At 13,300 sq. ft., it was the largest weight room in the country at the time with the closest being Oklahoma and Indiana with 6500 sq. ft. each. Bob Devaney said, “As long as I’m the Athletic Director we will continue to provide the best opportunity for our student-athletes to develop themselves physically. It has cost us a great deal of money but I feel it has been very worthwhile for our athletic programs.” The space was completed at a cost of $206,000 not counting new equipment. Combine running stretching and lifting if you dare to be great. 1981 Coaches had to average two hand held 40 yard dash times before the invention of Electric timing. The Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association has become the 2nd largest high school coaches’ association in the country. Coaches, national speakers, and vendors from all over the country feel that the Ohio High School Coaches Association Clinic is one of the best in the entire country. One of my favorite quotes comes from one of this year’s clinicians; John Cohen from Mississippi St. John speaks all over the country at not only big national conventions, but small ones too. He said, “Looking forward to seeing you at the clinic. You guys are first class and run an incredible clinic.” My hope is that you will feel the same after this weekend. I would also like to take time to welcome you to the Hyatt Regency, “Downtown Columbus”, and our home for the next few days. What an outstanding and first-class setting for one of the premiere high school coaches’ clinics. The league champion will attend the Tostitos Fiesta, FedEx Orange, Nokia Sugar or Rose Bowls as part of its membership in the Bowl Championship Series. The Hokies have represented the league in two of the aforementioned bowls - the Nokia Sugar Bowl (twice) and the FedEx Orange Bowl. • The BIG EAST and the Toyota Gator Bowl have a multi-year pact, which allows the Gator Bowl to select a BIG EAST bowl-eligible team after the league's representative in the Bowl Championship Series has been determined. The BIG EAST has sent a team to the Gator Bowl for six of the past seven seasons.
