Bot. Fennici 49: 217–228. Generative reproduction traits of the perennial Polygonatum multiflorum (Aspara- gaceae) were studied in seven populations in 2000–2010. The frequencies of typical hermaphrodite flowers and functionally male flowers with short or atrophied car- pels were 76%, 17% and 7%, respectively. Most hermaphrodite flowers occurred in the lower and middle positions on the ramets. The final fruit/flower ratio per ramet amounted to 25% and its variation was higher among populations than among years. The initial fruit set was on an average twice as high as the final fruit set. The mean number of seeds per fruit was 3.2, and the distribution was skewed to the right. At the inter-population level, the seed number and mass of fruits were negatively correlated with each other. Seed size/number trade off was significant for shoots and for fruits. The seedling emergence was 65%–82% and it was positively correlated with the seed size as well as the survival of seedlings. -

Deer impact ecosystems, both directly and indirectly. These impacts are driven by the foraging preferences of deer. The energy, protein, mineral, fiber, and secondary metabolite content of plants are important factors that inform the selective herbivory of deer. I examined the interactions between forage quality and deer impacts in northern Wisconsin using deer exclosures. I examined the forage quality of four focal species (Acer saccharum, Maianthemum canadense, Dryopteris intermedia and Carex pensylvanica) in both control and exclosure plots. -

Border zones create high but vulnerable biocultural diversity. Through reviewing scattered historical data and documenting the current use of wild food plants among people currently living in historical Setomaa and Võromaa parishes, we aimed to identify cross-cultural differences and diachronic changes as well as the role borders have played on the local use of wild plants. The Seto have still preserved their distinctive features either by consciously opposing others or by maintaining more historical plant uses. People historically living in Setomaa and Võromaa parishes have already associated the eating of wild plants with famine food in the early 20th century, yet it was stressed more now by the Seto than by Estonians. Loss of Pechory as the center of attraction in the region when the border was closed in the early 1990s brought about a decline in the exchange of knowledge as well as commercial activities around wild food plants. National support for businesses in the area today and the popularity of a healthy lifestyle have introduced new wild food plant applications and are helping to preserve local plant-specific uses in the area. -

Herbs perennial, rhizomatous. Stems erect, simple. Leaves alternate, sessile or petiolate, usually elliptic to ovate, sometimes basal leaf solitary and early withered. Inflorescence a terminal raceme or panicle. Flowers bisexual or sometimes unisexual (when plants dioceous), small. Perianth segments 4 or 6, in 2 whorls, free or proximally ± connate, rarely forming a long tube. However, any character (or tree) conflict in a dataset allows the exploration of support for various evolutionary hypotheses. Although data-display network approaches exist, biologists cannot easily and routinely use them to compute rooted phylogenetic networks on real datasets containing hundreds of taxa. Here, we constructed an original neighbour-net for a large dataset of Asparagales to highlight the aspects of the resulting network that will be important for interpreting phylogeny. The analyses were largely conducted with new data collected for the same loci as in previous studies, but from different species accessions and greater sampling in many cases than in published analyses. The network tree summarised the majority data pattern in the characters of plastid sequences before tree building, which largely confirmed the currently recognised phylogenetic relationships. Most conflicting signals are at the base of each group along the Asparagales backbone, which helps us to establish the expectancy and advance our understanding of some difficult taxa relationships and their phylogeny. -

Issue 2 NFG Winter Newsletter 2016-17 Norfolk Flora Group – Winter Newsletter 2016-17 Welcome to the NFG Winter Newsletter Amazingly, and despite the state of dormancy which many of us enter into at this time of year, a number of you read the inaugural edition; and some of you even seemed to enjoy it (or at least were too polite to say otherwise). Anyway; we were sufficiently encouraged that we decided to produce Issue No. 2. In this issue … we find out about Robin’s very large vegetable. There have been rumours, but we now have photographic evidence. Our esteemed Dr Leaney tells us about all the things we secretly wanted to know (but have always been too shy to ask) about glands; Richard discusses problems with Poa; the eagerly awaited results of ‘Norfolk Flora Group Pub of The Year’ are finally made public; Mike C goes fishing; and much, much more. We again take a quick look back at some of the more interesting moments from the 2016 botanising season, and prevue some of the events planned for the 2017 season. Contributors to this edition are Suki Pryce, Janet Higgins, Bob Leaney, Mike Crewe, Robin Stevenson and myself, together with our glorious ‘leaders’, Richard Carter and Bob Ellis; and our mysterious crossword compiler. Plant species recognition and outdoor education are perhaps the easiest way to approach nature relationships and increase knowledge. Unfortunately, it has been shown that people do not recognize plant species very well. This phenomenon is called “plant blindness”. This study presents information about the phenomenon in Finland. The purpose of this research was to determine how well Finnish students from different age groups recognize plant species and which variables explain recognition of plant species in general education in Finland. The subjects were pupils from primary school to university teachers. A total of 754 people took part in the research. The results showed that Finnish pupils do not recognize plant species very well, with wide variations in responses between student levels. Animal pollination has been recognized as an essential ecosystem function that is potentially under various environmental stresses. We investigated the landscape effects of forest cover at multiple spatial scales on the sexual reproductive success of a common woodland herb in North America, Maianthemum canadense. This species is a self-incompatible species and pollinated by insects requiring natural landscapes. Nine populations were selected in deciduous forests within agricultural fields of southern Ontario, Canada. We investigated whether fruiting success decreases as forest cover surrounding the plant populations increases at the landscape scale. Forest cover was quantified by the proportion of forest within six different radii from 250 to 1500 m. Analyses showed relationships with the proportion of forest at 750- and 1000-m radii and fruiting suc- cess in populations of M. canadense. These findings suggest potential local extirpation of M. -

PÖLZL wurde 1865 in Weitra geboren, war zuerst Lehrer in Langschlag, dann (ab 1896) Oberlehrer und (ab 1897) Schulleiter in Harbach, starb 1938 im Kran- kenhaus Gmünd, und wurde in seiner Geburtsstadt Weitra begraben. PÖLZL scheint sich erst nach der Übersiedlung nach Harbach intensiver mit der Flora seiner Heimat befasst zu haben und legte die Ergebnisse seiner Forschungen zunächst in einem handschriftli- chen Manuskript „Flora von Harbach und Umgebung“ in Form einer Artenliste nieder, welches erst im Zuge der Recherchen zur vorliegenden Arbeit entdeckt wurde. 1937, ein Jahr vor seinem Tod, schloss PÖLZL ein zweites, umfassenderes Manuskript ab, das den Titel „Überblick über die Farn- und Blütenpflanzen der politischen Bezirke Gmünd, Waidhofen und Zwettl“ trägt und im Stadtmuseum Gmünd verwahrt wird.
