  • Ressò White 2012 D.O
RESSÒ WHITE 2012 D.O. Catalunya Variety: 100% White Garnacha Vine Training: Goblet Vine Age: 50 Years Vineyard Info: The Vineyards located in the Terra Alta region in the far southwest of the Catalunya DO, west of the province of Tarragona, near the town of Gandesa. The region is perched high above the coast where the climate is an extreme Mediterranean with very low rainfall, approximately 14” per year, but with the peculiarity of a near constant presence of either the "Cers wind" (from the interior land to the sea) or the "Garbí wind" (offshore breeze). The area has a very high diurnal temperature variation. Soils are compact calcerourous clay with a very alkaline pH. Combined with very cold winters and very hot summers, all of these factors produce very special fruit. 90% of the entire world production of white Grenache is situated in the Terra Alta region, and is therefore considered an authentic and native grape variety that has a long history in the region. Vintage Info: 2012 was a dry growing season. Low rain during the year and very high temperatures turned made both harvest and vinification very complicated. It was made difficult by low acidity, over‐ripeness, and high pH. We are very proud of our Grenache blanc vineyard as this vintage really proves only the best old vineyards can make good wines even in the worst conditions. Our low production per vineyard and resistant soils allow this wine to keep full flavor and still be fresh and fruity. White fruit aromas mix with tropical fruit and floral notes to make this wine elegant and structured.

t angen t w i n e s www.tangentwines.com 2012 grenache blanc edna valley TASTING NOTES VARIETAL BACKGROUND A mutation of the red version of Grenache, Grenache Blanc is believed to have originated in the province of Aragon in northern Spain. Plantings later spread throughout the rest of Spain, Europe and into the Mediterranean, including what is modern day Sardinia. After the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century, SU STAI NABIL I ITY many vineyards in Rioja and France were replanted to Grenache, N PRA CTICE as well as some to Grenache Blanc. Grenache Blanc is commonly used as a blender in the Old World. It is a major component in the white wines of the Châteauneuf- du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône AOCs, and is often blended with Roussanne, and even some red wines. In fact, up to 10% Grenache Blanc is permitted to be blended into the red wines of the Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC. Almost half of all Grenache Blanc plantings are in the Roussillon region; here it is blended with Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Rolle. In Châteauneuf- du-Pape, Grenache Blanc is most often blended with Roussanne, Picpoul, and Clairette. It is known as Garnacha Blanca in Spain, where it is widely planted in regions including Navarra, Terra Alta, Alella, Aragon, and the Priorat. It is legally permitted in the white wines of Rioja. SIPTM CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE The Niven family’s two estate vineyards, Paragon and Firepeak, have earned the Sustainability in Practice (SIPTM) Vineyard family has ensured that these vineyards have historically been farmed in a careful and responsible manner, taking into account their collective commitment to environmental stewardship, WINE STATISTICS economic viability, and equitable treatment of employees.

T ABLAS CREEK VINEYARD ROUSSANNE 2006 The 2006 Tablas Creek Vineyard Roussanne is Tablas Creek’s fi fth national release of its 100% Roussanne. The wine is exuberantly and elegantly in character of the Roussanne grape, with honey, honey- suckle, and pear aromatics, a rich, viscous mouthfeel with just a hint of oak, and a long, lingering fi nish. We use most of our Roussanne in our Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc each year. However, we often have some Roussanne lots in the cellar that are so powerfully characteristic of the varietal that we feel they would be too dominant in a blend. In these cases, we reserve a small quantity of this powerful Roussanne for a single-varietal bottling. As with all our wines, our Roussanne grapes were grown on our 120-acre certifi ed organic estate vineyard. The 2006 vintage was a study of contrasts, with a cold, wet start, a very hot early summer, a cool late summer and a warm, beautiful fall. Ample rainfall in late winter gave the grapevines ample groundwater, and produced relatively generous crop sizes. The relatively cool late- season temperatures resulted in a delayed but unhurried harvest, wines with lower than normal alcohols, strong varietal character, and good acids. The Roussanne grapes were whole cluster pressed, and fermented using native yeasts half in stainless steel and half in small French oak barrels. The wine was left on its lees for 6 months, and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. After fermentation the wines were blended, and bottled in May 2007. The 2006 Roussanne is a vibrant expression of the Roussanne grape.

  • 2016 Grenache Blanc
monterey 2016 Grenache Blanc appellation: monterey vineyards: scheid san lucas soils: diatomaceous shale and sandstone climate: moderate, region iii (ucd) alcohol: 13.5% acidity: 7.3 g/l ph: 3.16 cooperage: barrel aged for 5 months, 10% new oak retail price: $22.00 production: 192 THE GRAPE Grenache Blanc is the white grape version of the red Grenache and is widely planted in the Rhone Valley and in Spain. It is often used along with Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and other varietals in white wine blends in the Rhone. It is also finding increasing popularity in the south of France, in Provence / Languedoc, as a stand-alone varietal. Very little is planted in California. THE PLACE The Monterey appellation extends almost the entire length of Monterey County. Vineyards within the AVA are planted and farmed in relationship to the their distance from the cold waters of Monterey Bay. The fruit for this Morgan release is sourced from the Scheid San Lucas vineyard in central Monterey County. Here daytime temperatures reach the mid to upper 80’s but are mitigated by fog and wind drawn south from Monterey Bay. The warm days and cool evenings extend the growing season, resulting in fruit of superior flavor and balance. Budbreak at the beginning of the 2016 growing season was about 10 days earlier than normal, which also meant a somewhat early harvest at the end of the cycle. The winter/spring rainfall totals were better than 2015, but not near what the forecasters predicted. The spring and summer was mild with no extreme cool or warm periods; mildew control was a challenge throughout the season.

  • 2018 Roussanne
TEXAS HIGH PLAINS 2018 e Wine: Roussanne, originating from the Rhone Valley, has found a home in the Texas High Plains. Our Roussanne produces a distinctively rich white wine with wonderful aromatics reminiscent of tropical fruit, pineapple and honeysuckle. e palate is equally rich with hints of citrus, Mandarin orange, grilled nectarines and a light acidity. AVA: e Texas High Plains is the second largest AVA in Texas, comprising roughly 8 million acres in west Texas, mostly south of the panhandle region. e eastern border of the Texas High Plains AVA follows the 3000 elevation contour line along the Caprock Escarpment, the steep transitional zone separating the High Plains from the lower plains to the east. e elevation within the Texas High Plains gradually increases from 3,000 . to 4,100 . in the northwest portion of the AVA. is positioning provides an environment of long, hot dry summer days, which allow the grapes to mature and ripen to proper sugar levels, and cool evenings and nights, which help set the grape’s acidity levels. Grapes and wine have been produced in this region since the mid-1970s and vineyards here have become the major grape supplier to wineries throughout the state. ere are over 75 Wine Grape Varietals planted in the High Plains AVA, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Grenache, Merlot, Malbec, Dolcetto, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Viognier. Wine Makers Notes: We aged our Roussanne in new French Oak Barrels to provide a kiss of oak before moving the wine into stainless to complete its maturation. No malolactic fermentation was required with this grape as acidity is naturally so and the grape complex in phenolics.

Enter here to win! 8.4.15 - It is extraordinary to consider that about 20 years ago Priorat was an unknown name in the roll call of Spanish wine regions. Today, much has changed. Priorat is now one of just two regions with a designated DOCa classification, a step up from plain DO, the other being Rioja. A band of friends René Barbier was the first of a group of winemakers to buy land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. Credit: Copyright 2015 Rosemary George It began in the late 1970s, when René Barbier bought land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. The first wine was made in 1989 and Barbier was joined by what he calls a band of copains, friends who had worked or studied together and went on to develop their own estates, such as Alvaro Palacios from Rioja. However, Priorat has always been a wine area, with vineyards run by the priory of Scala Dei, the ruins of which nestle at the foot of the dramatic cliffs of Montsant. In 1835, the Spanish government confiscated all church property, and then the region suffered badly from the phylloxera (the aphid that was imported into Europe on American vines and ultimately destroyed most of the vineyards of Europe, until the remedy of grafting European vines onto American rootstock was discovered).

  • Bubbles and Pink
(Bubbles and Pink) Two thoughts: 1. One should enjoy Bubbles on a regular basis. (End of discussion.) Sure, birthdays, anniversaries and holidays are great times to raise a glass, but why limit one’s self to just those events? Sparkling wines always seem to create a festive atmosphere, no matter how large or small the occasion. And perhaps the best part, Bubbles can be enjoyed on their own or paired with a wide array of dishes. A bowl of potato chips anyone! 2. Rosé wines are not, I repeat not, to be had just during the summer months. Yes, they are particularly delicious during those warm (and hot!) summer days, but Rosés can also transition nicely into the cooler days of autumn. Given that Rosés are made in a wide variety of styles – from off-dry to bone dry -- they are incredibly food friendly and pair well with an endless number of dishes. And, yes, Rosés are also great with potato chips! We hope you enjoy these selections. Cheers! FEATURED WINES Bubbles and Pink Pierre Brut Nature Blanquette de Limoux, France, 2016 A blend of 90% Mauzac and 10% Chenin Blanc made in the traditional Champagne style. Yeasty on the nose with flavors of green apples, pears and white flowers. The bubbles are luscious and well-integrated, adding length and depth to this cuvee. $10.00/Glass $58.00/Bottle LaLuca Prosecco, Veneto, Italy, N.V. Aromas and tastes of crisp peach, pear, apple and lemon curd come together in a rich and creamy off-dry style that is extremely $6.00/Glass $24.00/Bottle appealing.

  • Addendum for the CSW 2021
Addendum regarding: The 2021 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, as published by the Society of Wine Educators This document outlines the substantive changes to the 2021 Study Guide as compared to the 2020 version of the CSW Study Guide. All page numbers reference the 2020 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-wine-maps-2021/ Page 15: The third paragraph under the heading “TCA” has been updated to read as follows: TCA is highly persistent. If it saturates any part of a winery’s environment (barrels, cardboard boxes, or even the winery’s walls), it can even be transferred into wines that are sealed with screw caps or artificial corks. Thankfully, recent technological breakthroughs have shown promise, and some cork producers are predicting the eradication of cork taint in the next few years. In the meantime, while most industry experts agree that the incidence of cork taint has fallen in recent years, an exact figure has not been agreed upon. Current reports of cork taint vary widely, from a low of 1% to a high of 8% of the bottles produced each year. Page 16: the entry for Geranium fault was updated to read as follows: Geranium fault: An odor resembling crushed geranium leaves (which can be overwhelming); normally caused by the metabolism of sorbic acid (derived from potassium sorbate, a preservative) via lactic acid bacteria (as used for malolactic fermentation) Page 22: the entry under the heading “clone” was updated to read as follows: In commercial viticulture, virtually all grape varieties are reproduced via vegetative propagation.
