JANUARY 2019 THE TASTING ROOM EVALUATED LAST MONTH: 302 • REJECTED: 257 • APPROVED: 45

Confessions of a Taster Last week, I sat down to write my Instagram posts, Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and Instagram stories. What a digital world we live in. In literally a matter of months, marketing has made dramatic changes. But what I have realized is that marketing is not the clicks and attempts to fool Google…not at all. Though the plethora of consultants that have invaded the digital marketplace is ten times what it was 24 months ago, they all seem to be experts on what buttons to click, yet not on what message to promote. When I explain how this company works and how we get our wines and how we produce the value we do, they revert to what buttons I should be clicking. They don’t get it.

So here it is: My job is to find you the best wines I can find for the club you are in. Notice I said MY job, not the job of a panel, not the job of a 1099 employee, not the job of a broker, MY job. My name is on the selections; I take the responsibility. And since I have been tasting each Tuesday (without fail unless I am out of town) for the past 30 years…I think I get it (that was sarcastic…I get it). continued on next page >> Paul Kalemkiarian, Owner/Cellarmaster Membership in the Wine of the Month Club is open to anyone with an @WineoftheMonthClub @WineoftheMonth interest in and appreciation for superb wines... and excellent wine values. WINE OF THE MONTH CLUB • 123 W POMONA AVE, MONROVIA, CA 91016 www.wineofthemonthclub.com • 1.800.949.9463 Caption caption caption caption caption caption << continued from previous page I do this for my members. I do this to present the best product for the best value I can find. I do this as a rep- resentation of my family and company. The funny thing is, this club started as (and still is) a service - not a way to sell more bottles, but a way that customers of my father’s store could feel confident when taking the wines of the month to the sales counter. In other words…it was like walking into Palos Verdes Wines and Spirits and saying “What do you recommend, Paul?”

We have been rating wines longer than most of the wine periodicals that are famous now. And the difference is that we not only rate, but sell the wines as well. So I ask this question: If you went to the store and bought a high- ly rated wine based on a periodical and you tasted it at home and were not impressed, what would you do? Go back to the store and say, “I don’t agree with the rating and I want my money back”? Not likely… But with me… I will take it back and find you something you DO like. Salud,

Flashback A look back at some stellar selections with Ed Masciana April 1975 Selection of , 1972. Sutter Home - $3.85/fifth (757 ml) Most people don’t know that Sutter Home was making some of the best Zinfandel in California BEFORE they made White Zinfandel. This one was fabulous, and they still make one of the best, except now it’s under their Terra d’Oro label.

April 1975 Selection of Imported Wine Etna Bianco, 1971. Villagrande - $3.79/fifth (757 ml) I was shocked to see this wine featured back in 1975. I didn’t even know where Etna was at the time, but since then I’ve discovered this most unique area in the world of . The are planted in Sicily on an active volca- no - which makes things not only delicious, but precarious. More interesting is that the E.U. has a special fund for the on Etna. If the volcano erupts and the vineyards are burned at the stake, the fund will help the farmers replant. It’s the only area that is funded like that. Pretty cool.

In the 1970s, Walt Babcock, a dentist from Long Beach, California, COLOR purchased a piece of property with his wife, Mona, in the Santa Ynez Valley for future retirement. Then someone came along and Medium Gold told him it could be a nice place to grow grapes. The advice was good, and he took it.

Their first full was in 1983, and they shopped their grapes NOSE to a few local winemakers (probably all of 12 at that time). A few White Peach took the chance on an unproven ’s grapes, which led to one of them taking a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair for their .

Their son, Bryan, was at Occidental College studying Biology and Chemistry at the time, and soon applied to get his master’s in Enology at U.C. Davis. The next is when things FINISH got crazy. Lively Lime 1984 was a vintage where everything ripened at once. None of the local winemakers had time for Walt. I’m imagining Walt’s conversation with his son went something like this: “You’ve got to come here and make the wine now!” And Bryan said, “I haven’t PAIRING graduated.” And Walt said, “Tell that to the grapes.” Seafood, Fowl, And so, it was. The building that houses the Medium Magenta winery was built in 1900. The vineyards had been planted a few years before that – in the late 1800s. That’s early for California winemaking!

NOSE The winery building (now a historical monument) was sold to Violets, Sweet Cherry the Christian Brothers in 1930 and became the headquarters for Brother Timothy, one of the most renowned winemakers in the state. A funny thing happened on the way to the winery. The grapes COLOR came in, but the winemaker didn’t. Exactly what happened is still Medium Magenta a mystery, but at least these sensational grapes were made into sensational wine.

Oregon’s Willamette Valley has been known for great Pinot Noir NOSE for decades. It’s also unfortunately known for inclement weather, Cotton Candy, which can ruin a vintage in an instant. Things have changed here Cherry like the climate. The Willamette Valley is now having great vintage after great vintage, and 2015 may be one of the best yet.

PALATE Pinot Noir is a very finicky grape. The weather and soil must be to Cherry, Spice its liking or it just won’t produce great wine. But when it does, the wine is incomparable.

And that’s what we have here. Pinots from the Willamette Valley FINISH have more of a kinship to the Holy Grail of wine areas, Burgundy, An Eternal Swirl than to any other place. Some would say it is heresy to even compare Burgundy to anywhere, except that you have to suffer through ten bad ones to get a great one and, quite frankly, some of us are quite tired of this exercise. PAIRING Fowl, Seafood, This rare beauty has it all. The brilliant, magenta signals the lovely Vegetarian aromatics of cotton candy, strawberry/rhubarb pie, cinnamon and clove. The mouth exhibits a sensual swirl of the aromas on the palate adding flecks of mint and cherry. CELLAR Now through 2025 The finish doesn’t really finish, as it lasts for minutes on the tongue and probably a lifetime in the heart.

Our selection is crafted by Austerity Vineyards in Monterey. It is COLOR in the O’Neill family of wineries, which has come to mean that Very Dark Violet the wine will always be great - with superstar winemaker Mark Rasmussen at the helm - and also a great value.

These guys are as smart and savvy as they come in the wine NOSE business. They won’t even try to grow Cabernet Sauvignon in Monterey, even though it’s the most popular red grape in the Cherry, Licorice, world. Vanilla But just down the road a piece is a place called Paso Robles, PALATE and that area is making some of the best Cabernet on the planet. So, that’s where O’Neill decided to plant their Cabernet Dense Cherry, Sauvignon vineyard and, as we like to say, it was good! Great Blackberry grapes and a great winemaker equals great wine. FINISH Paso Robles is one of the most unique wine-producing regions in California. It gets hot - really hot - but so do parts of Napa and Large and Lovely Sonoma. At night, though, Paso Robles gets quite cold - way colder than Napa and Sonoma in the summer.

Why does that matter? Well, when it’s hot, the vine produces PAIRING sugar. If it’s still hot at night, it’s still producing sugar, but at a Red Meat lower rate. If it’s really cold, the vine stops producing sugar. So, what you have in Paso Robles is a longer growing season. Alex started by becoming a salesman, importer and advocate for a wine that most people had never heard of.

NOSE Those of us who had heard of had tasted the French Tropical Fruit, version and thought it was awful. So, how good could the same Apple grape be when it came from Argentina? Well, “surprised” doesn’t go far enough. Stupefied would probably handle it better.
