Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT There are 9 bamboo books in the Warring States period in Shanghai Museum, which are precious historical materials for studying the characters and culture of Chu in the pre-Qin period. Since its discovery, experts and scholars have been studying it. In this paper, there are four aspects closely related to the study of interpretation, i.e. the compilation and connection of bamboo slips, the interpretation of words and sentences, the translation of interpretation, cultural background, etc. A comprehensive review of relevant studies on three bamboo slips in volume 4, i.e. Caifengqumu, Zhaowanghuishi, Jiandawangbohan, inside and outside China is conducted in this paper. If students are learning Mandarin Chinese, no matter if they are beginners or advanced learners, they should be aware of paramount importance of Pinyin. Good knowledge in Pinyin can greatly help students express themselves more clearly; it can also help them in achieving better listening and reading comprehension. Before learning how to read, write, or pronounce Chinese characters, students must learn pinyin first. This study aims at highlighting the importance of Pinyin and its usage in Mandarin for any students learning Mandarin Chinese. The research work adopts descriptive research method. The work is divided into introduction, body and conclusion. 1. INTRODUCTION Pinyin (spelled sounds) has vastly increased literacy throughout China and beyond; eased the classroom agonies of foreigners studying Mandarin Chinese; afforded the blind a way to read the language in Braille; facilitated the rapid entry of Chinese on computer keyboards and cell phones. "About one billion Chinese citizens have mastered pinyin, which plays an important role in both Chinese language education and international communication," said Wang Dengfeng, vice-chairman of the National Language Committee and director of language department of the Education Ministry. "Hanyu Pinyin not only belongs to China but also belongs to the world. It is now everywhere in our daily lives," Wang said, "Pinyin will continue playing an important role in the modernization of China." (Xinhua News, 2008). -

Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Introduction The Rong Cheng shi manuscript is the largest text among the so-called Shanghai Museum manuscripts on bamboo slips (Shang bo cang jian 上 博 藏 簡) considered to be of Chu 楚 provenance2 and dated to the mid through the late fourth century BC. INSCRIPTIONAL RECORDS OF THE WESTERN ZHOU Robert Eno Fall 2012 Note to Readers The translations in these pages cannot be considered scholarly. They were originally prepared in early 1988, under stringent time pressures, specifically for teaching use that term. Although I modified them sporadically between that time and 2012, my final year of teaching, their purpose as course materials, used in a week-long classroom exercise for undergraduate students in an early China history survey, did not warrant the type of robust academic apparatus that a scholarly edition would have required. Since no broad anthology of translations of bronze inscriptions was generally available, I have, since the late 1990s, made updated versions of this resource available online for use by teachers and students generally. As freely available materials, they may still be of use. However, as specialists have been aware all along, there are many imperfections in these translations, and I want to make sure that readers are aware that there is now a scholarly alternative, published last month: A Source Book of Ancient Chinese Bronze Inscriptions, edited by Constance Cook and Paul Goldin (Berkeley: Society for the Study of Early China, 2016). The “Source Book” includes translations of over one hundred inscriptions, prepared by ten contributors. I have chosen not to revise the materials here in light of this new resource, even in the case of a few items in the “Source Book” that were contributed by me, because a piecemeal revision seemed unhelpful, and I am now too distant from research on Western Zhou bronzes to undertake a more extensive one. -

Chinese History-Writing Between the Sacred and the Secular
CHINESE HISTORY WRITING BETWEEN THE SACRED AND THE SECULAR Yuri Pines Th e nexus of religion and the writing of history in ancient China is a broad topic that may pertain to a large variety of texts and non-textual phenomena, depending on the defi nition of “religion” applied in the Chinese context. To focus the discussion more topically, in what fol- lows I shall adopt a heuristically-convenient defi nition of “religious” and “secular” with regard to historical texts. I defi ne a text, or an aspect thereof as “religious” insofar as it is related to communication with dei- ties (particularly ancestral spirits), or insofar as it is supposed to have a certain sacral power of infl uencing the world through a proper choice of wording or proper arrangement of the material. Alternatively, I treat the text as “secular” if it lacks the above traits and is intended either for political education for the elite members or for their entertainment. My discussion will focus on those texts that had lasting impact on Chinese historiography, namely the canonical Chunqiu ਞટ (Annals) and its commentaries, and the fi rst of the so-called “offi cial histories,” the ,Shiji ಖ (Records of the historian). In what follows, I shall outline, fi rst the cultic origins of the Chinese historiographical tradition and suggest that the Chunqiu should be understood primarily as a ritual rather than a historical text. Th en, by analyzing two of the most important Chunqiu commentaries, the Zuozhuan ؐႚ (Zuo commentary) and the Gongyang ႚ (Gongyang commentary), I shall trace the bifurcation ofےzhuan ֆ history writing between the “secular” and the “religious” traditions. -

The strips have all been assigned an approximate date of 300 B.C.E., and Heng Xian allegedly consists of thirteen of them, but each proposed arrangement of the strips is marred by unlikely textual transitions. The most plausible hypothesis is one that Chinese scholars do not appear to take seriously: that we are missing one or more strips. The paper concludes with a discussion of the hazards of studying unprovenanced artifacts that have appeared during China’s recent looting spree. Minna Wu The Shandong region has been of considerable interest to the study of ancient China due to its location in the eastern periphery of the central culture. For the Western Zhou state, Shandong was the “Far East” and it was a vast region of diverse landscape and complex cultural traditions during the Late Bronze-Age (1000-500 BCE). In this research, the developmental trajectories of three different types of secondary states are examined. The first type is the regional states established by the Zhou court; the second type is the indigenous Non-Zhou states with Dong Yi origins; the third type is the states that may have been formerly Shang polities and accepted Zhou rule after the Zhou conquest of Shang. On the one hand, this dissertation examines the dynamic social and cultural process in the eastern periphery in relation to the expansion and colonization of the Western Zhou state; on the other hand, it emphasizes the agency of the periphery during the formation of secondary states by examining how the polities in the periphery responded to the advances of the Western Zhou state and how local traditions impacted the composition of the local material assemblage which lay the foundation for the future prosperity of the regional culture. -
A Chinese Academic on the Hundred Flowers Campaign
SOURCE ANALYSIS CR4/ 02 A CHINESE ACADEMIC ON THE HUNDRED FLOWERS CAMPAIGN A Chinese academic, Wu Ningkun, recalls the Hundred Flowers Campaign: The Central committee enjoined party leaders at all levels to solicit criticism from people in every walk of life, especially from intellectuals and members of “democratic” parties. The critics were urged to “air their views without reserve” for the benefit of the party and its members … We all applauded the courageous decision taken by the party … The People’s Daily and other newspapers in Beijing carried numerous articles by well-known intellectuals criticizing party officials and even the guidelines of the party itself … At meetings at universities and government departments many people poured out their hearts in hopes of helping the party and its members mend their ways…Freedom of speech was having its day; that day was short … The sagacious “Great Leader” let it be known at a later date that all this had been a premeditated plot to “coax a snake out of its lair,” or to ensnare his critics into a trap … I fell into the trap … According to later government statistics, more than half a million people were labeled rightists. There were no figures for those who had been denounced but spared the label, nor of those who had been driven to insanity or suicide. The “hundred flowers” ended in a mass intellectual castration that was to plague the nation for decades to come, putting to shame the notorious emperor of the Han Dynasty who had unjustly punished only one dissident historian with physical castration.
