Love was definitely in the air around our facility. We enjoyed some Valentine’s related crafts, helped decorate our home in ☻ Scented bath oil red and pink for the holiday. We also had a special party for all of our residents with the help ☻ Bingo prizes of our Auxiliary ladies who provided an ice cream social with balloons and flowers. A gift was given to each one of our residents with love from the staff of the Activity Department. ☻ Makeup ☻ Hair products The fun continued on our outings, as we headed out to some of our monthly favorite spots ☻ Accessories including, Walmart for some bargain shopping, Chinese Buffet, Papagalino for Greek Coffee and Loukoumades, North Branch, Butterfield and Demetri’s Restaurants, who always ☻ Toiletry provide a delicious meal for our residents. Power! Honor! These are the temptations that, unfortunately, many people are unable to resist. This is the source of all the disputes, disagreements and divisions among Christians. This is the root of people's forgetting the "one thing needful" which is proposed to us by the true Christian faith and which consists of prayer, acts of repentance, and sincere, un-hypocritical charity to our neighbors. The Holy Church always calls us to this, but especially now, during the Great Fast! What is required of us Christians is not some kind of "exalted politics," not lofty phrases and hazy philosophy, but the most humble prayer of the Publican: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!", acts of repentance, and doing good to our neighbors, which proceeds from a pure heart. It is for the practice of all of this that the Church has established Great Lent! How powerfully, colorfully, graphically, and convincingly, with what ardent inspiration is all of this spoken of in the divine services of Great Lent! No one anywhere has such a wealth of edification in this regard as do we Orthodox in our incomparable Lenten services, which, to their shame, the majority of Orthodox in our times do not know at all.

    The Date of Pascha Anton C. Vrame, Ph.D., Director Department of Religious Education Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America In 2013, Pascha/Easter is May 5, while Western Christians and Eastern Catholics will celebrate Easter on March 31 (Our Eastern or Byzantine Catholic friends began Great Lent on February 11, Clean Monday. The Orthodox Church of Finland by law follows the Western date for Easter, so they too will celebrate Pascha on March 31.). Why so late? Why the difference between East and West? The issue is complicated and goes deep into history. Recall that in the first three centuries of Christianity, Christians were divided about the date for celebrating the Resurrection. Some had fixed the date; others celebrated with Passover, others on a Sunday after Passover. One of the main issues of the First Ecumenical Council in 325, in Nicaea, was unifying Christians on the date for celebrating the most important Feast of the Church. Dr. Lewis Patsavos’s article, “The Calendar of the Orthodox Church” explains the decision of Nicaea and what has transpired since then to, once again, create divergence in the date of Pascha between East and West. “The determination of the date of Easter is governed by a computation based on the vernal equinox and the phase of the moon. According to the ruling of the First Ecumenical Synod in 325, Easter Sunday should fall on the Sunday which follows the first full moon after the vernal equinox. If the full moon happens to fall on a Sunday, Easter is observed the following Sunday. The day taken to be the invariable date of the vernal equinox is March 21.

    Period of the Lenten triodion Part two Great Lent – from the Monday of the 1st week to Friday of the 6th week = 40 days. A. The weeks run from Monday to Sunday. The first day is called Clean Monday. The weekdays are more intensive than the Saturdays and Sundays in, terms of having more Lenten prayers and hymns and more somber melodies. No prostrations are done on the weekends, and wine and olive oil may be used on the weekends. Traditionally on weekdays we fast from meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, wine and olive oil. However, our pastoral handbook states, that we must abstain from meat and meat products on Wednesdays on Fridays. B. The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is chanted the first week. The first Sunday is called Sunday of Orthodoxy. C. Second Sunday = Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas. D. Third Sunday = Sunday of the Cross, and the 4th week, which follows it, is sometimes called the week of the Cross, because during it, we venerate the Cross. E. Monday in the 4th week is the “middle of the time of abstinence” since we have passed more than half of the 40 days. Wednesday of the 4th week is the “midmost point of the fast.” F. Fourth Sunday = Sunday of St. John Climacus. G. Fifth Thurday at Vespers (that is, Wednesday evening) the 24 hymns of St. Andrew of Crete are sung. H. Fifth Thursday at Matins: Great Canon I. Fifth Saturday at Matins: Akathist hymn (may be chanted Friday evening, or – as in Greek practice – spread over several Friday evenings).

    Chaplaincy Services Holy Days, Celebrations, and Observances of March 2019 Holy Day With No Fixed Date Athabascan Stick Dance/Potlatch The Alaskan Athabaskan are a Subarctic people who live in an area directly south of the true Arctic regions. Their land stretches from the border of the Canadian Yukon Territory to just beyond the Arctic Circle. They once wandered throughout a vast region, but after Europeans came they built villages of fifty to five hundred people along the Yukon, Koyuckuk, Tanana, and Copper Rivers. Most of them still live in those areas in the early twenty-first century. Few villages have roads leading into them and are reached by boat, snowmobile, or plane. Two major festivities still held by Alaskan Athabaskans are the potlatch and the stick dance. Both are week-long, gift-giving ceremonies that honor the dead. In the past the Alaskan Athabaskan potlatch might also be held to celebrate a girl’s reaching puberty or to call attention to a man’s wealth. During the ceremony, tribal members perform their spirit songs and dances, feast, and receive the plentiful gifts distributed by the hosts. The stick dance is held in March and is hosted by a widow to honor her dead husband. Men carry a fifteen-foot-long pole into the village hall on the fifth evening of the ceremony, and women decorate it with ribbons and furs. Thirteen dances are held with the stick as a focal point. There is much feasting and distributing of gifts. Sometimes the event takes years of planning and saving. At the end of the event (typically a Saturday) the pole is taken down and carried past each house in the village before being broken up and thrown into the Yukon River, which is usually still frozen at this time of year but which will eventually melt and carry the pole’s shattered remains to the sea.
