He reluc- tantly took on the role three years ago but has proved an inspiring Chair for the Area. He has ensured that the Area Council now has a sense of direc- tion and purpose in working towards the Ramblers charitable aims and has ably run their meetings. I have included only one notable person: the Member of Parliament, Mr George Hall. I will include other notable people in the next issue. Winter 1947 For the last 40 years we have had relatively little snow, but 70 years ago in 1947 Britain experienced the worst winter for hundreds of years. What was it like living in this valley then? Here are some articles from the Aberdare Leader that tell us of the terrible conditions and of the hardy people who overcame them: Miners trudged two miles to work when bus stuck Paint frozen in tins Broken, frozen milk bottles at Trecynon Creamery Frozen Aberdare Park Lake but no skating! Western Welsh buses taking miners to the “Pandy” Colliery, (Rhigos Drift), had to stop two miles away from the colliery owing to the heavy snowfall. The miners trudged the remaining two miles through the snow to the colliery and traversed the same distance back to the bus at the end of the shift. Wednesday week was the coldest day of the present wintry spell at Aberdare when 17 degrees of frost were recorded at the park.

I grew up exploring the wonderful mix of heritage and beauty on my doorstep as a child and into adulthood. We have some of the most distinctive and breath-taking, natural landscapes in Wales and the UK. But all too often, the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Valleys, and their ability to attract visitors, have been overlooked and undervalued. For too long, they have been seen solely through the prism of the coal dust thrown up by the pits and the unemployment left by their closure. The Valleys are not a single community but many communities, with many different and diverse people – these differences were evident in the large number of meetings and conversations that I and the members of the Ministerial Taskforce for the South Wales Valleys have had with communities across the Valleys over the course of the last two years as we have developed the Our Valleys, Our Future plan together and started to put it in action.
