    THE ONE AND THE MANY English-Canadian Short Story Cycles Gerald Lynch 'VER THE PAST HUNDRED years the short story cycle has Q 1 become something of a sub-genre within the Canadian short story. This is not to argue that the story cycle has been ignored by American and British writers ( or by French, Australian, and Russian writers, or, for that matter, by the writers of any other national literature) — it hasn't — only that the form has held a special at- traction for Canadian writers. Doubtless there are shared reasons for the story cycle's current popularity internationally and in Canada, even such commercial reasons as its attraction for publishers who assume that readers are more comfort- able with the linkages of the cycle than with the discontinuities of a miscellany. But such matters are not within this paper's literary-historical and theoretical scope. The present study sketches the history of the story cycle in Canada, gives an idea of its diversity and continuing popularity, considers some of the fundamental ques- tions about this comparatively new form, and concludes with an illustrative analysis of the function of one important aspect of story cycles, their concluding stories. Although the short story is the youngest of genres, beginning only in the early nineteenth century, literary historians and theorists often begin their discussions by casting back to the Story of Job, even to pre-literate oral history, so that the epic poems of various cultures are made to seem proto short story cycles.2 Thus aca- demics dress their new subject in the respectable robes of a literary history.

    The Giller Prize (1994–2004) and Scotiabank Giller Prize (2005–2014): A Bibliography Andrew David Irvine* For the price of a meal in this town you can buy all the books. Eat at home and buy the books. Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Abortion in Canadian Literature: Comparisons with American Literature and Canada’s Unique Contributions Jeff Koloze A BSTRACT: After reviewing the scholarship on abortion in twentieth- century Canadian fiction written in English, the essay discusses various abortion scenes in major Canadian works by comparing and contrasting them with major works from the United States. The essay then discusses post-abortion syndrome and illustrates passages in Canadian fiction on abortion where numerous characters display features of that syndrome. OCATING CANADIAN NOVELS concerned with abortion often approximates an archaeological dig since compilations of literary Lcriticism frequently obscure, minimize, or lack references to abortion. Margaret Atwood’s Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature1 has much to say about babies being an inappropriate solution for a plot’s denouement, calling this technique the “Baby Ex Machina,”2 1 Margaret Atwood, Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature (Toronto ON: McClelland & Stewart, 1972). 2 Atwood, Survival, p. 247.     Book Reviews Sandra Birdsell, The Two-Headed Calf (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1997). Paperback, 269 pp. $19.99. A new work of fiction by the talented Sandra Birdsell is always a welcolne gift. When the book is as good as this one, her readers can enjoy an added bonus. Birdsell began as a writer of short fiction back in the eighties with two highly promising collections-Night Travellers (1982')andLadies oJtheHo~ise(1984)- followed by two novels which fiirther enhanced her reputation. Now she is back with an even stronger collection of short stories, her first in a dozen years, and one that richly demonstrates what an accomplished short story writer she has become. In Mavis Gallant and Alice Monroe, Canada boasts two or the finest writers of short fiction in English, and with this vol~uneSandra Birdsell proves she is not far behind. She lnay not yet display quite the wise coslnopolitanisln and subtlety of forln displayed by Gallant, or quite match the startling depths of insight of Monroe, but she is getting closer to both in all these qualities. Each of these nine stories is a polished gem, but then not all gems are of equal quality or value. And although Mennonite readers lilte to think of Birdsell as one ol'their own, only three of these stories draw explicitly on Mennonite back- gro~mdsand contain identifiable Mennonite characters. But those three-"A Necessary Treason," "The Man from Mars" and the title story "The Two- I-Ieaded Calf1--are among the strongest in the book in their vivid authenticity, relevant themes and searing emotions.

History, language and culture are effective resources to use in reinforcing one group’s ‘difference’ or distinctiveness, because they appear to invoke origins in a historical past with which one’s group con- tinues to correspond; that is to say that they are readily used in the creation of origin myths. Benedict Anderson has famously asserted that our cultural identity is constructed by self and com- munal definitions predicated on specific, usually politically inflected differentiations such as gender, religion, race, or nationality; all are categories of imagined or imaginary belongings which are publicly institutionalized and discursively organized. Thus it is that we live our gender, race, religion, or nationality in a structured way, that is to say, according to a politics. Globalization is thought to threaten a group’s previously established identity politics. Cultural sociologist John Tomlinson summarizes how that situation is widely believed to have evolved: Once upon a time, before the era of globalization, there existed local, autonomous, distinct, and well-defined, robust and culturally sustain- ing connections between geographical place and cultural experience.
