I wanted to revisit them, and this is an excellent edition. Time does march on however...although the storytelling and spirit of adventure was superb, there was no depth to the plot or characters; it was like a James Bond escapade, although the settings are a bit more realistic. Nothing wrong with a good yarn, but it is quite dated in my opinion; sort of like watching "Mad Men" with some stereotypes and fairly predictable behavior and outcomes. Nevertheless, not a bad way to spend a few days reliving youthful memories...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Descriptive of the region, exciting at times...By pomfrogThe first time I read this book was many years ago and, perhaps at that time I found it difficult to put down and may have given it a 5* but water has flowed down the rivers since then so this second reading I feel that perhaps the storyline is not up to the standards of his other books. The action is good, exciting even but.... At times it's a little confusing. Don't let that put you off, it will pass your time as it did for me the first time sitting around a swimming pool in some far off resort.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The earlier books are the best [the last ten suck]By CustomerThe first thing you need to know about MacLean is that he has masterpieces, and he has Clutter pieces. Then you can read the masters and avoid the clutter. The earlier books are the best [the last ten suck]. This is one of the masterpieces, but of a lesser effort than Ice Station Zebra, The Golden Rendezvous, Force 10 From Navarone etc The classic tale of suspense set in Provence, where an English tourist investigates a series of mysterious deaths, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. From all over Europe, even from behind the Iron Curtain, gypsies make an annual pilgrimage to the holy shrine of their patron saint in the Provence region of southern France. But something is different about this year's gathering, with many suspicious deaths.Cecile Dubois and Neil Bowman decide to investigate. Eavesdropping, Bowman discovers that a man named Gaiuse Strome is financing the gypsies, and his suspicions on the real identity of Strome center on a highly wealthy aristocrat, distinguished folklorist and gastronome, Le Grand Duc Charles de Croytor, whose girlfriend Lila Delafont is a friend of Cecile. As they follow the caravan, Bowman and Cecile find that their lives in danger many times in an effort to uncover the secret the gypsies are so determined to hide, and before long are running for their lives. 'Even more action-packed than its predecessors' The Times'The best MacLean since The Guns of Navarone. Gypsy caravans holding dark secrets, swarthy, murderous men, knives glinting in the moonlight. Alistair MacLean is a magnificent storyteller' Sunday Mirror'The usual blend of MacLean magic… Murder, torture and intimidation follow each other in breathless succession to an exciting finale' Yorkshire PostAbout the AuthorAlistair MacLean, the son of a minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands.
