They don’t reach disaster sites in an adequate time-frame - for most disas- ters come without a warning. What if there was a way to send a ‘how-to’ system that could work for certain cli- mates? What if we could invent a sort of framework that utilizes natural resources native to the land to build these structures? Could there be a social benefit with the empowerment and reinvigoration of the ‘self-help’ aspect of bouncing back from a disaster? Will we find an economic benefit by designing with local and abundant materials? 9 EMERGENCY HOMES // IS DESIGN A NECESSITY OR A LUXURY? “We need real care, not awareness.” Claim: Of the things we as human beings have a ‘right’ to--air, water, food-- shelter seems to be the last component that is compromised, in the history of disaster relief. In fact at least three million Western Europeans are homeless each winter, 700,000 people on any given night are without shelter, while another 600 million urban dwellers and 1 billion people in rural areas live in overcrowded and poor-quality housing--slums, railway platforms, old buses, (McGranahan). These statistics are vacuous from immediate disasters, like the most recent Caribbean disaster: Hurricane that displaced hundreds of thousands of people. “Designers cannot just stand by and watch as the refugee crisis unfolds”, and although ar- chitects and designers can’t save the world, through design, we can alleviate consequences of scarcity. It’s not about creating a structure that will withstand the ends of time or endure the most extreme climate, it’s about how to respond in an emergency with the most geo- graphically intelligent prototype that utilizes the utmost importance of on site materials so the bare minimum of an instruction manual or few key tools to offset distribution obsta- cles. This thesis is aimed to design for the 99 in disaster relief. The pop-up architecture (or landscape architecture) becomes popular nowadays. Some highlights include annual architecture program such as the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion at Hyde Park, London; MPavilion in Melbourne; MoMA PS1 and Heart Sculpture in New York. Many of these pop-up architectural works have been designed by world renowned architects, such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Hezorg and de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, Toyo Ito, SANAA, Shigeru Ban, BIG, etc. And many of these designs reflect innovative thinking that changes the professional world of architectural design. But above all, these pop-up architectures were created in responsive manner to the urban community and the community controversially has good response to this type of architecture. In the other words, pop-up architecture is the way the architects touch the heartbeat of the cities, make them livable for all. Ho Chi Minh City has its own types of pop-up landscape architecture, whereas this paper intends to explore in two case studies: Nguyen Hue Floral Boulevard and Nguyen Van Binh Book Street. Nguyen Hue Floral Street is celebrating now its twelfth birthday in the city. Nguyen Van Binh Book Street has just passed its first anniversary in 2017. Both cases live its own story behind the scene about how livable a city could be through place-making by architecture and landscape design.

    TOP JAPANESE ARCHITECTS CURRENT VIEW OF JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE by Judit Taberna To be able to understand modern Japanese architecture we must put it into its historic context, and be aware of the great changes the country has undergone. Japan is an ancient and traditional society and a modern society at the same time. The explanation for this contradiction lies in the rapid changes resulting from the industrial and urban revolutions which began in Japan in the Meiji period and continued with renewed force in the years after the second world war. At the end of the nineteenth century, during the Meiji period, the isolation of the country which had lasted almost two centuries came abruptly to an end; it was the beginning of a new era for the Japanese who began to open up to the world. They began to study European and American politics and culture. Many Japanese architects traveled to Europe and America, and this led to the trend of European modernism which soon became a significant influence on Japanese architecture. With the Second World War the development in modern Japanese architecture ground to a halt, and it was not until a number of years later that the evolution continued. Maekawa and Sakura, the most well known architects at the time, worked with Le Corbusier and succeeded in combining traditional Japanese styles with modern architecture. However Kenzo Tange, Maekawa's disciple, is thought to have taken the first step in the modern Japanese movement. The Peace Center Memorial Museum at Hiroshima 1956, is where we can best appreciate his work.

Novel structural and formal solutions applied in pavilions also can give them an unusual appearance that attracts the eyesight of spectators. In this article, the authors explore the possibility of combining structural novelty, visual attractiveness, and low cost in the design and construction of a temporary pavilion. For that purpose, an innovative structural system and design approach was applied, i.e., a membrane structure was designed in Rhino and Grasshopper environments with the use of the Kiwi!3D IsoGeometric analysis tool. The designed pavilion, named Obverse/Reverse, was built in Opole, Poland, for the occasion of World Architecture Day in July 2019. The design and the construction were performed by the authors in cooperation with students belonging to the Humanization of Urban Environment organization from the Faculty of Architecture Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. The resultant pavilion proved the potential of obtaining a low-budget but visually attractive architectural solution with the adaption of parametrical design tools and some scientific background with innovative structural systems. By Eric Wills Shigeru Ban stares into the camera, stoic, revealing the Launch Slideshow occasional hint of a half­smile. “The lights are bright,” he says, as a photographer shoots multi​ple frames of him sitting against the wall of a conference room in Manhattan’s Kitano Hotel. It’s six o’clock on a Monday evening in August. Ban, a Japanese architect acclaimed for his poetic sensibility and use of nontraditional building materials like paper tubes—“an old­ school Modernist with a poet’s touch and an engineer’s inventiveness,” is how Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times’ new chief architecture critic, once described him—has just flown in that morning from his Paris office. He spent the day with his New York–based partner, Dean Maltz, discussing a new commission—his first foray into restoration work, he says. Tomorrow he’s flying to Colorado for High Relief a meeting about his design of the new 30,000­square­foot Aspen Art Museum. The architect designed these houses to be very cheap, but sturdy and able to safely house people in need. They are both waterproof and fire- resistant, and therefore can function as short- or long-term dwellings. When they were first designed, they were intended simply to replace the existing tents that did not provide very much shelter. Although people have been attempting for years to build temporary homes for people in need that are both solid enough to live in, and cheap to make and assemble, this particular design is the first of its kind. Because of the houses strength and low cost, the architect or outside parties have not improved on the original design. Shigeru Ban is the inventor/designer of the paper log houses. He made these houses as a cheap solution to the housing problem that was in Kobe after an earthquake left many people living in very bad houses. The reason why he started to uses paper, as a building material is that he “was interested in weak materials”. Through his exploration of materials he came across paper and found out that it was an easy material to work with and build cheap houses out of.

BY DANA GOODYEAR Ban, who has been celebrated for his socially conscious architecture, says, “I have no interest in ‘Green,’ ‘Eco,’ and ‘Environmentally Friendly.’ I just hate wasting things.” PHOTOGRAPH BY KOSUKE OKAHARA. he main campus of Vitra, a Swiss furniture company that produces Frank Gehry’s Wiggle Tchair, is an Epcot of contemporary architecture. It includes buildings by Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, and Tadao Ando; a fire station by Zaha Hadid; and an elegant white factory, shaped like a slice of eight- minute egg, by the minimalist Japanese firm Sanaa. All these architects have won the Pritzker Prize, the field’s highest honor. The work of this year’s laureate, Shigeru Ban, has also been displayed at Vitra. Huddled on a lawn, his structures, three fifty-dollar tents sheathed in standard-issue plastic tarps from the U.N., intended for the refugees of the Rwandan civil war, looked as if any minute they might be loaded on a pallet and removed. Ban’s work lay underneath the plastic: a simple skeleton of recycled-paper tubes, fitted together with plastic joints and braced with ropes describing the pattern of an unfinished star. Ban, who has built museums, mansions, corporate headquarters, and a golf-course clubhouse in South Korea, takes pleasure in distinguishing himself from his peers, and in pointing up their excesses: not much of their work could fit into a kit that comprises eleven elements (Paper Tube A, Paper Tube B, plastic peg), including the bag.

    Shigeru Ban: 2015 Austin College Posey Leadership Award Founder of Voluntary Architects’ Network Shigeru Ban was born in Tokyo to a businessman and couture clothes designer. As a child, Ban became mesmerized by the work of carpenters, hired by his parents to renovate their wooden house. Fascinated by the craftsmen’s tools and pieces of wood, Ban began building small structures. Before entering high school, he decided to become an architect—and a rugby player. Fate pointed him in the direction of architecture school. And a magazine article about John Hejduk, then- dean of Cooper Union’s School of Architecture in New York City, led him to the United States. Architect in the Making In 1977, he headed first to California to learn more English—and establish residency; Cooper Union did not accept students from abroad. So, Ban enrolled in the newly established Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), located in a Santa Monica warehouse. Ray Kappe, founder of SCI-Arc and a pioneer of prefab housing, accepted Ban as a second-year student. Ban encountered case studies of post-World War II houses that mixed modern styles of Frank Lloyd Wright and Kappe, among others, with traditional Japanese influences. Students studied tent-making and built Buckminster Fuller-style geodesic domes. They even took a cue from German architect and engineer Frei Otto, constructing bisected paper tubes for mailboxes. Ban remained at SCI-Arc for almost three years, then transferred to Cooper Union. Before graduating from Cooper Union in 1984, Ban took a year off to intern in the Tokyo office of architect Arata Isozaki, one of Japan’s most prominent architects.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to investigate the practicality and feasibility of certain sustainable and innovative materials, as opposed to traditional building materials. There are mountains of by- products of our civilization which can be reused as building materials. These are the natural resources of the twenty-first century. The paper examines the potential of these materials by considering design issues such as; availability and ease of production, cost, durability/ life span, construction time and aesthetics. Two materials have been chosen, as case studies, to demonstrate the potential of these materials. They are: Paper/Cardboard –It examines the use of cardboard tubes and reinforced paper panels called Sonoboard Bamboo – It examines the use of bamboo as a fast growing materials 2. PAPER AS A BUILDING MATERIAL The Japanese have always had a special interest in paper as a building material. Paper shoji screens and lanterns define the traditional Japanese house. Shigeru Ban is a pioneer of paper tube structures (PTS). He has come up with a building system based on cardboard tube columns. In the last decade Ban has designed recyclable and easy to mount cardboard houses as well as designing shelters for refugees and disaster victims. Ban first began experimenting with alternative materials in 1986, when he used paper, instead of wood, to build his Alvar Aalto exhibition display.

    Evaluating the Functional Performance of Small-Scale Public Demountable Buildings Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by: Junjie Xi June, 2013 ii Abstract This thesis investigates the design, operation and use of contemporary demountable buildings, and explores how functional performance can be assessed in small-scale examples for public use alongside with their relationship to other design elements. The research focuses on three case studies that do not require a high-technology building environment or complex construction skills. Demountable buildings are defined as those that are transported in a number of parts for assembly on site. Contemporary demountable buildings respond to ecological issues, social impacts, technological innovation and economic demands. They can be used to measure a society’s development in environmental sustainability, innovation and economic growth through various forms. Small-scale demountable buildings fulfil many temporary habitation needs in diverse roles, such as non-emergency transitional housing, ephemeral exhibition buildings and seasonal entertainment facilities. The purpose of examining functional performance is to assess if, and how, the requirements of the design have been achieved. This enables project operators to address functional performance from a public perspective by reflecting on the scope and ambition of their projects. This thesis draws on existing literature to investigate previous and on-going research relating to demountable buildings, including classification, the construction process and project management. It also examines selected existing evaluation methods that cover principles, modelling and computer- based solutions from a wider research area, including Guidelines Developed by City Council and Culture Sectors; Assessment Methods in Humanitarian Response and Methods in Environmental Assessment.
