Please also include the distribution of staff (professors, Associate professors, PhD holders, PhD candidates, etc.) The BA employs around 2,344 staff. It is managed by 331 Senior and Junior managers and Consultants, from whom are 147 women and 184 men. Among this staff, 7 are professors, and 47 PhD holders. 7. SPECIALIZATION Indicate the main disciplines that the institution and its staff are involved in. (Please try to stick to the 10 thematic priorities of the FP7 Program + disciplines concerned with basic Sciences) The BA is much more than a library as it contains 9 sectors and a total number of 48 affiliated specialized centers and departments which undertake a number of specific projects and activities which complement and support one another in a coherent fashion. Through these activities and projects the BA is considered involved in all the thematic priorities under the “Cooperation” program. In addition, the BA is involved in both the “People” and “Capacities” programs. These disciplines could be elaborated through the BA’s departments and their activities that varies from seminars, conferences, exhibitions and projects as illustrated below: 10 Academic Research Centers 1. Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex-Med): It documents and researches the tangible and intangible heritage of Alexandria and the Mediterranean, whilst aiming to promote dialogue and exchange in the re- gion. It seeks both to preserve the past and to promote the future development of the city of Alexandria, by conducting research on its heritage and holding conferences and exhibitions. Alex-Med has implemented a number of projects such as the Med Cities project and Alexandria Database. Link: www.bibalex.org/alexmed 2. Alexandria Centre for Hellenistic Studies: It is open to scholars from around the world who are keen to obtain diplomas, Masters and Doctorates in Hellenistic studies in particular, from the departments of History, Literature, Art, Archeology and Architecture, and Philosophy and Science. Link: www.bibalex.org/hellenisticstudies 3. Arts Center: It promotes exchange, dialogue and mutual understanding between cultures through its performing and visual arts programs. Calligraphy Center: It’s purpose is to study inscriptions, calligraphies and writings in the world throughout the ages, from the pre-dynastic period up to the digital age. One the projects achieved by the Center is a CD that in- cludes 1000 examples of Arabic Calligraphy. The Center for Peace and Democracy Studies (CPDS): The core activity of CPDS is to provide expert training and conduct research in democracy, women’s political participation, non-violent conflict management and reso- lution, and peace building. Through its multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research, CPDS aims at increasing Bibliotheca Alexandrina – April 2012 people’s awareness, encouraging them to support peace, building individuals’ capacity to foster dialogue and reconcilia- tion. Center for Development Studies: With an aim to promoting public involvement in the process of economical, social and cultural development, the BA has established its Center for Development studies. The Center supports the practice of good governance, the development of public policies, and the establishment of a democratic system. Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT): It aims at applying the latest technol- ogical innovations to document Egypt’s cultural heritage, tangible and intangible, as well as Egypt’s natural heritage which includes information about the natural areas and their biological components. Link: http://www.cultnat.org/ 8. Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP): It is an independent scientific non-profit institution. It seeks out a generation of creative and innovative researchers through Research Grant programs, and recognizes the existence of a pool of untapped potential available in young researchers all over Egypt, who are eager to collaborate with interna- tional institutions, but who lack the process needed for such collaboration. The CSSP deals with the fields of public health, prevention education, environment, food, agriculture, biotechnology, nanosciences, nanotechnolo- gies, materials and new production technologies through holding a number of activities among which (1) Science Supercourse project, (2) BioVision Alexandria Biannual Conference, (3) Regional BioSecurity Workshop and (4) Nano- technology Science Lecture. Link: www.bibalex.org/cssp 9. International School of Information Science (ISIS): ISIS acts as an incubator for digital and technological projects. It strives to preserve heritage for future generations in digital form and to provide universal access to human knowledge, in addition to promoting research and development of activities and projects related to building a universal digital library. ISIS implements a number of projects such as (1) Digital Assets Repository, (2) Memory of Modern Egypt and (3) Virtual Immersive Science and Technology Applications (VISTA). Link: www.bibalex.org/isis 10. Manuscript Centre: It’s work revolves around the preservation, digitization, and management of heritage. It operates through a number of integrated sections (Heritage Publishing, Restoration, and Academic Activities and Spe- cialized Translation), which work in harmony with the ones in the Manuscript Museum (Rare Collections, Microfilm, Museographic Display). Planetarium Science Center (PSC): PSC is an educational center dedicated to increasing the public's understanding and appreciation of science, mathematics and technology through scientific shows and interactive exhibits. The Center encourages curiosity, imagination and creativity through a large diversity of activities presented within three sec- tions; The Planetarium, The History of Science Museum and The ALEXploratorium. PSC has implemented a number of projects like the Science Clubs and La Main à la Pâte (LAMAP). The PSC is also very successful in outreach through or- ganizing very successful conferences, lectures, Video conference and other activities such as Science Festivity, World Environment Day and others. Its main task is to provide val- ue-added services and support to BA departments in mobilizing donor funds for the implementation of various depart- mental projects. The RDD is also active in the field of socio-economic sciences and humanities through the projects it implements such as: the “Higher Education Funding Opportunities in the Arab Region” project that aims at helping higher education students and institutions to access organizations supporting them in addition to providing them with the tools that qualify them to get this support. Link: www.bibalex.org/he_funding 13. The Publishing Department: It manages the BA’s image as a center of excellence, through peer review, translation, editing and maintaining the BA website. It is also responsible for the Annual report, which highlights the progress of all the BA activities each year. In addition, the Department implements “Reissuing the
