♦ 3rd Season as Torero Head Coach

♦ 21st Season 011 USD Coaching Staff

Kevin McGarry enters his third year as head coach of the University of San Diego football program. This past season he directed the Toreros to an 8-3 overall mark and a school best second place finish in the Pioneer Football League with its 4-1 mark. The 1997 campaign was USD's best showing since moving to the NCAA Division I-AA ranks and the PFL conference in 1993. Last year's club became only the fourth USD squad to achieve at least eight victories in 35 years ofTorero football, and it was the program's most victories since the 1981 season. The team's 33.6 points per game average ranks second all-time in USD football. Kevin McGarry Record The tenth coach to direct the Torero football program since its start in 1956, Year w L PCT Kevin is the first USD graduate to head the position. McGarry enters the 1998 1997 8 3 727 season with a career mark of 12-9, and with fourteeen starters back and fifty 1996 4 6 .400 returners, the immediate future bodes well for Torero football. Career 12 9 .571 McGarry is no stranger to USD football. Prior to his stint as head coach in 1996, he was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for eighteen seasons, including the last fourteen as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He became a full-time assistant for football in 1985 -- his first seven years (1978-84) were split between football, women's softball (head coach) and as an elementary school teacher. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevin was also responsible for recruiting and as liaison for the USD Football Alumni Club. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Kevin's years of experience at USD have prepared him well for this position," stated Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. "He clearly understands the role of the football program within the mission of the university." Over the past twenty seasons with Kevin on the coaching staff, USD has accumulated an overall record of 113-84-3, including fifteen seasons with records of .500 or better. Of the nine USD football players that have been named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1981 , eight have come from the defensive side of the ball, including seven defensive backs. In 1987 the Torero defense set a school record for shutouts in a season with four, and the team gave up just 100 points in ten contests and finished 6-3-1. Prior to joining the USD coaching staff in 1978, Kevin was a two-year letterwinner on the USD football squad (1976-77), earning co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He played two years (1974-75) at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1975. He received both his Bachelor of Arts in Education (1979), and his Master's Degree in Education Administration (1985) from the University of San Diego. He is currently on a leave of absense from USD's Doctoral program in Education. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, reside in Scripps Ranch and have four children: twins Pat and Mike (11 year-olds), Timbo (8-years-old), and Matt (2-year-old). The 1998 football season marks the sixth year for the Pioneer Football League (PFL), a conference commjtted to operating a quality football program for the benefit of the student-athletes and the university community. Formed in November of 1991 , the Pioneer Football League is comprised of NCAA Division I universities that previously sponsored intercollegiate football at other level s. With the passing of NCAA legislation at the January 1991 convention, Division I institutions were required to conduct all intercollegiate sports at the same level. Therefore, the five charter members, Butler University, University of Dayton, , University of Evansville and Valparaiso University, joined together, sharing a common academic and athletic ph-i-losophy and a common commitment to operate quality football programs. In February, 1992, the University of San Diego joined the PFL for its inaugural season. The University of Evansville dropped their program after the 1997 season. The PFL joins the Ivy and the Patriot Leagues as NCAA Division I-AA conferences that provide only need-based financial aid for football players. The conference remajns a proponent of NCAA Division I-AAA legislation that would develop a classification for Division I football programs operating with need-based aid and adopted the moniker of Pioneer based on the intent to become one of the first I-AAA leagues. Picked to finish last in the '97 pre-season PFL coaches poll, the Toreros powered through league play with road wins over Evansville and Valparaiso, and home victories versus Butler and Drake. The win over Drake was the program's first, while the team's lone conference loss came at perennial PFL champ Dayton. "We' re thrilled to finish sec ond," stated Coach McGarry. It is Sara Hickmann essential that student-athletes receive the necessary academic assistance to continue normal progress toward a degree while participating in athletics. USD student-athletes receive assistance through advising, progress reports, academic tutors, campus learning centers, such as the Logic, Math, and Writing Centers, and the Accelerated Study Program. The Accelerated Study Program provides a monitored, quiet area open only to the student athletes to ensure quality study time. These services are available to all USO student-athletes.

STRENGTH& CONDITIONING The USD strength and conditioning program is under the direction of Steve Brown who is in his third year. It has been designed to develop functional strength, speed, power and endurance. The development of these physical attributes is useless to the athletes unless it can be carried onto the playing field. Therefore, adhering to a properly designed program of strength training, conditioning and nutrition can enable our men and women to become the best possible athletes they can be, while simultaneously reducing the incidence of injury. USD student-athletes receive intensive instruc tion on proper weight training technique; speed, power and agility development; and sport-specific conditioning. Their strength and conditioning programs are specific to the nature of their sport or position. Each athlete will be individually monitored throughout their program to en sure the greatest chance of athletic progress. Steve was recently named as the 1998 National Strength and Conditioning Association Professional of the Year for the West Coast Conference. University Profile 34

SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution-of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spani sh village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christi ans recaptured the village centuries later and founded a uni versity whose buildings became the in spiration for USD's architectural style.

THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique in stitutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renais sance style. Since 1984, USD has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A five story, Spanish R enaissance parking garage ( I, I 00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A land scaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall , which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labo ratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.

ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The uni versi ty's aca demic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class s ize gener all y averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ra ti o being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time fac ulty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and uni versities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in I 994. The uni versity is ranked among the top I 00 schools in the nati on.

San Diego is truly "America '.s Finest City." A modern metropolis ( second largest in California) and a popular year round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California '.s greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's his tory, economy and development. Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country's only area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round environment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall average of less than JO inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity ofpursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles ofpublic beach or golf at any of the over 80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-acre recreation and cultural center, of fers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, ten nis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams -- the NFL Chargers and the National League Padres play at Qualcomm Stadium. During bowl week, San Diego annually hosts the Plymouth Holiday Bowl in late December. On January 25th, 1998 the NFL Super Bowl was played at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. A Message From President Hayes

As the president of the University of San Diego, this is my fourth Torero season. I am proud of the USD Football Team and pleased that the university supports the program in every way possible, including emphasis on academic excel lence, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. Our student-athletes are winners on and off the field. They demonstrate the values that char acterize a USD education - commitment, integrity, teamwork, discipline, and respect for the dignity of all human beings. These are qualities that will help them throughout their lives. I am looking forward to the corning season and hope that you will join me in supporting our team. It's an exciting schedule and promises to be a great year. Dr. Alice B. Hayes President

Paul Bissonnette John McNamara Msgr. Daniel J. Dillabough Vice President - Financial Affairs Vice President - University Rel ations Vice President - Mission & Ministry Director of Athletics ~~----37 TOM IANNACONE Director Of Athletics Tom Iannacone begins his eleventh year as Director of Athletics at the Univer sity of San Diego. He was named Director of Athletics on September 1, 1988 after holding the same position the previous four years at St. Francis College of Pennsylvania. At USD, Iannacone directs an Athletic Department that includes sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate varsity teams, eight men's and eight women's, plus intramurals and recreation. In the last ten years behind his direction and leadership, Torero Athletics has enjoyed successes both on and off the playing field. His accomplishments at USD include an internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instrumental in USD gaining membership to the Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. He is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee; and is past Chairman of the West Coast Conference Athletics Directors Committee. During Iannacone' s tenure, facilities at the USD Sports Center, along with all athletic fields, have seen vast improvements. Improvements at the Sports Center include complete renovations of both the north and south wings that added offices for administrators and coaches; additional locker rooms for women's basketball, volleyball and women's soccer; an athletic department conference room; and an academic support room. Torero Stadium, where football, men's and women's soccer compete, was widened to accommodate soccer, and added a state-of-the-art lighting system and scoreboard. The Softball Complex has benefitted with a new dugouts, scoreboard, batting cages and additional seating. Additionally, The Canyon Field received lighting for intercollegiate practices and intramural use. This past fall the university began its Capital Campaign for the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a new 5,000 seat multi-purpose facility that will be home for USD basketball and volleyball, and benefit the entire university community. On the playing fields, USD has sent twenty-one teams to NCAA Tournaments since Iannacone' s arrival in the Fall of 1988. Additionally, the school has captured six conference championships; twenty NCAA All-Americans; fifteen CoSIDNGTE Academic All-Americans; sixteen conference Coaches of the Year; ten conference Players of the Year; and three West Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Since '88 the university has been the host site for NCAA Tournament events for women's volleyball, men's soccer and women's tennis. Prior to USD, Iannacone built an impressive list of credentials at St. Francis College as Director of Athletics between 1984-87. His major contributions included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions com mittee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development. He served as assistant Director of Athletics at Fordham University between 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties, he was assistant fo otball coach for the Rams. Between 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordi nator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The '77 squad was and remains the highest scoring team. in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 he was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey A ward by the Alumni Association for his outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and field, and football in Connecticut Public School Districts from 1964- 76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric. All three are graduates of the University of San Diego. Athletic Staff-----
