OFFENBACH VE “GÜZEL HELEN” OPERETİ Eren GÜLLÜ Gönderim Tarihi: Eylül 2018 Kabul Tarihi: Ocak 2019 ÖZET Operet; konusu, orkestrasyonu, librettosu ve müziği açısından daha hafif, kısa ve sade sahne eserine verilen addır. Opera Bouffe ise 19. yy. Fransız bestecilerinden J. Offenbach’ın tasarladığı özel bir türdür. Bestecinin Güzel Helen Opereti opera bouffe tarzında yazılmıştır. Konusu, Troya Savaşı döngüsünün başlangıcında yer almaktadır. Tarih boyunca Helen karakteri, Halk Ozanı Homeros’tan, Sofist Gorgias’a kadar birçok anlatıma konu olmuştur. Mitolojide önemli bir yer taşıyan Paris’in Helen’i kaçırma efsanesi, Offenbach’ın bu yapıtında parodiye dönüşmektedir. Offenbach and His Operetta “Beautiful Helen” ABSTRACT Operetta; It is the name given to the lighter, shorter and simpler stage work in terms of the theme, orchestration, librettos and music. Opera Bouffe is a special kind which is designed by J. Offenbach, one of the 19th century French composers. The composer’s operetta “Beautiful Helen” was written in the style of Opera bouffe. The subject is at the beginning of the Trojan War cycle. Throughout history, the character of Helen has been the subject of many narratives from Homer to Sophist Gorgias. The myth of Paris’s abduction of Helen, which has great importance in mythology, is transformed into parodies in this work of Offenbach. In this work, the composer satirized both contemporary society and antiquity. Catchy tunes, humorous as well as extraordinary lyricism, the harmony between music and libretto are the factors that lead the composer to success. In the research conducted by qualitative research method, the partiture of the work is examined. Sources of art history have been researched. It was concluded that there was a perfect harmony between libretto and music, that he was treated meticulously in terms of prosody, and that the orchestration allowed him to hear the libretto first. Yunanlı olduğu halde daha sık Troyalı olarak Uludağ Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi Uludağ University Faculty of Arts and Sciences Journal of Social Sciences Cilt: 20 Sayı: 36 / Volume: 20 Issue: 36 192 anılan Helena’nın öyküsü farklı şekillerde tasvir edilmiştir. Homeros, Odysseia’nın dördüncü ve on beşinci kitaplarında; Helena’yı, “…uzun entarili, tanrısal (Homeros 2005: 91)”, …güzel saçlı…”, “…güzel yanaklı…” Uludağ Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi Uludağ University Faculty of Arts and Sciences Journal of Social Sciences Cilt: 20 Sayı: 36 / Volume: 20 Issue: 36 193 MÖ 5. yüzyılda Atina’daki yönetim şekli demokrasi idi ve bu siyaset biçiminde aktif olmak isteyen Atinalıları güzel hitap edebilme, söylev verebilme veya güzel konuşma konularında eğiten hocalar vardı. Sadece Paris’te 700 kez sahnelenen Güzel Helen opereti çok geçmeden Viyana (1865), Berlin (1866), Şikago (1867), New York’ta (1871) temsil edildi. Operetin konusu Troya savaşından önce Yunanistan’ın Sparta kentinde, deniz kenarında geçmektedir. Troya Savaşı öncesi bir çoban kılığına bürünen Paris’in Helen’i kaçırması komik bir anlatımla parodiye dönüşür. Güzel Helen’in izleyici potansiyeli hiçbir zaman azalmamıştır ve eser unutulmamıştır.

  • The Mountains of Crete
208 THE MOUNTAINS OF CRETE THE MOUNTAINS OF CRETE BY L. H. HURST F he is not already aware of the fact, the visitor to Crete will at once perceive that it is a highly mountainous island. There are three groups whose summits exceed z,ooo m. In the west, the White Mountains rise behind Canea and fall steeply on the south to the Libyan sea. The area contains some twenty such summits and is by far the most important of the three. Mount Ida (in Greek, Psiloriti) rises in the centre of the island. In the east, the upland Lasithi plain is ringed by hills and mountains which reach their highest point in Mount Dikte to the south. With the possible exception of one particular face, the rock climber is unlikely to find anything to interest him in Crete. All the summits are easy and can be reached from various directions. But for the elderly mountaineer, whose more active days are behind him but who is still able to walk and to whom untravelled regions have an appeal, Crete may well be the answer. The mountains are best visited at the end of April or in early May, while some snow still remains to give them such beauty as they may claim and add to the interest of the ascents. Only a great enthusiast would wander amongst them in the months of summer when they have been stripped to their bare bones and their grey limestone faces blench and shimmer under a sun that is more African than European.

Kernos Pherekydes’ Daktyloi 1 Pherekydes’ Daktyloi Ritual, technology, and the Presocratic perspective Sandra Blakely Introduction: Classics and the Evolutionary paradigm 1 Western culture is traditionally ill equipped to understand the intersection of ritual and technology. Pfaffenberger, Killick, and Lansing have observed the causes, and what is lost by failing to shake these off.1 Because these activities occupy different categories in the industrialized world, attempts to interpret their coincidence in other cultures lean to the dismissive. They are regarded as a reflection of the earliest stages of invention, compensatory appeals to the divine that reflect incomplete mastery of technological processes. The combination is often called magic by both practitioners and academics. Magic has been traditionally synonymous with primitivism; an evolutionary model suggests that such superstitions evaporate as technology is mastered, and linger only in folk tales and half-remembered superstitions.2 The cost of this paradigm is substantial. Emphasizing the movement into subsequent intellectual paradigms, it reduces attention to symbols in context.

Thanks are due to Andrew Banchich and Christopher Filkins for their assistance with a range of technical matters and to Ryan Post, who read and commented on drafts of the translation. ii INTRODUCTION In the spring of 2007, I suggested to four students—Sarah Brill, Emilyn Haremza, Dustin Hummel, and Ryan Post—the preparation of an English translation of ΠΕΡΙ ΠΟΤΑΜΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΟΡΩΝ ΕΠΩΝΥΜΙΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΩΝ ΕΝ ΑΥΤΟΙΣ ΕΥΡΙΣΚΟΜΕΝΩΝ, better known, when known at all, by its abbreviated Latin title, De fluviis, About Rivers. Their resultant rough version of a portion of About Rivers, in turn, provided the impetus for the translation presented here. However, while the students worked from Estéban Calderón Dorda’s text in the Corpus Plutarchi Moralium series, for reasons of copyright, I have employed what was the standard edition prior to Dorda’s, that of Rudolph Hercher.1 Only the ninth-century codex Palatinus gr.

Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2018) 14:12 DOI 10.1186/s13002-017-0201-8 RESEARCH Open Access An ethnobotanical study in Midyat (Turkey), a city on the silk road where cultures meet Ali Akgul1*, Ayfer Akgul2, Serdar G. Senol3, Hasan Yildirim3, Ozcan Secmen4 and Yunus Dogan5 Abstract Background: Studies of ethnobotanical usages in south-eastern Turkey are rare. To widen this field of knowledge, we conducted an ethnobotanical study in Midyat (Mardin Province), Turkey. Methods: The field study was completed during three years (2007–2010). Our aim was to document the ethnobotanical uses of local plants and to make an ethnobotanical inventory of uncommon plants using qualitative interviews. Results: During field studies, 368 voucher specimens were collected in the investigated area. Ninety-two traditionally used plant species were reported from Midyat and surrounding vicinities in Turkey. Among the 92 taxa (129 usages), 35% were used for medical purposes, 22% for food, 13% for animal fodder, 7% as ornamental plants and dyes, 6% as brooms, 4% for latex and as fragrance, 4% for herbal tea, molasses and wine preparation, 3% for agricultural purposes, and 6% for other purposes. Comparative assessment showed that Teucrium polium (0.51), Matricaria aurea (0.26), Alcea setosa (0.21), and Malva neglecta (0.21) have the highest recorded UVs, and the following taxa had UVs between 0.10–0.20: Anthemis cotula (0.12), Allium cepa (0.13), Alcea striata subsp. striata (0.14), Crupina crupinastrum (0.12), Papaver rhoeas (0.13), Salvia multicaulis (0.14), Thymbra spicata (0.11), and Vicia pannonica subsp.
