What I find so impressive about this statement is its focus on Eucharist as activity. After all, “liturgy” literally means work. We work hard at liturgy: the choir practices the hymns, the environment committee works hard to beautify the church, the homilist works hard to apply the Gospel to modern life, the greeters are present to warmly welcome people, the lectors practice their readings, and the altar servers have to remember where to be at Mass. When we merge our efforts and gifts together, we give our God fitting praise.

I love it when the ministers of Eucharist gather in the sacristy before Mass. We make sure of our particular assignment, we pray together, and form a team and thus “do” liturgy together. WWW.STLUKESPARISH.COM 9 Who are the St. Luke’s knights of columbus? by doug johnston

Many people know the Knights of Columbus as the gentlemen who wear the nice uniforms with the feather in their hat, and who are ever-present at First Communions, Confirmations, funerals, and parades. While that is a part of who we are, we are that, and so much more. We are a group of Catholic men who have a passion, even a need, to serve and help the parish, our priests, the local community, and the world. We try to find places of need within the church and community where we can use our time and talents to serve.

Three years ago, a group of men got together and formed the St. Luke’s Knights of Columbus Council #16053. Currently, we are over 30 members strong and growing. You might have seen us at the Parish Picnic or the St. Patrick’s Day dinner. Maybe we met you at our Tootsie Roll Drive which raises monies to help those with disabilities, or at the cookouts for the summer Religious Education program. We try to involve ourselves as much as we can in helping our parish thrive and grow.

The first principle of the Knights, though, has always been charity. We try to support as many worthwhile causes as we can. Whether it is providing monetary support to organizations and programs such as Loaves and Fishes , SPRED (Special Religious Education), Special Olym- pics, and Hurricane Harvey Relief; collecting and distributing backpacks and school supplies to children in need; or supplying clothes and toiletries for our Veterans; we look for ways to give back as a measure for all we have been given.

Perhaps you have been looking for a way to more fully live out your faith. The Knights of Columbus offer both a focus and an opportunity to do just that. If you are a Catholic gentleman, 18 years or older, and this sounds like something you may be interested in, or you just want to learn more about us, please contact me, Doug Johnston, at 401.252.9845 or [email protected].

If you know of some way that the Knights can be of service to the parish or community, please contact the Rectory at 246.1212.

A Combined Alison Chouinard & Andrew Gossy Spiritual Exercise 7/22/2017

by deacon dom diorio Amy Sevigny & Richard Bustin-Garduno 8/12/2017 Members of the St. Martha’s and St. Luke’s Parishes have combined to participate in a spiritual exercise program which was conceived by St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuit Kathleen Meehan & Andrew Kadak Order, in the 16th century. St. Ignatius used these spiritual exercises to form those who 8/19/2017 entered the Order. Over the years, this Ignatian spirituality has played a significant role in priests and laypeople being able to integrate themselves into the dialogue between Heidi Grossman & Austin Gilbertson God and man in their own era and culture. Trough these exercises, one not only devel- 9/3/2017 ops an intimate relationship with Jesus, but also comes to appreciate how much we are loved by God. Renee Jiacovelli & Justin Dupre 9/16/2017 St. Ignatius’s spiritual exercises involve the meditation on a passage or scene from the biblical narrative of salvation so that you can “hear” what Jesus Christ says to you in your Christine Hjerpe & David Pellegrine own existential situation, and you can “see” what He intends to accomplish through you 10/7/2017 in our world of the twenty-first century.

Te exercises are divided into four notional “weeks,” as referred to by St. Ignatius. Tese are:

Week 1 – In this week, we meditate on God’s love for us, our dependency on God, God’s IN MEMORIAM action in our lives, the fact that we are desired by God, and our finiteness. Finally, it ends by us meditating on how sin has alienated us from God. Tis leads us to the second Richard Burns 6/14/2017 week when we meditate on Jesus entering the scene to bring us back to God. Claire Cardin 9/12/2017 Week 2 – Tis is an intense time of growing closer to Jesus as we spend time with Jesus Peter Clements 10/18/2017 by sharing in His earthly ministry.
