We're Going Intergalactic! WE’REWE’RE GOINGGOING INTERGALACTIC!INTERGALACTIC! VIRTUAL CONFERENCE NOVEMBER 1-22 2020 02 SPONSORS Thank you to all of our sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. PRESENTING CHAMPION GOLD CHAMPIONS SILVER CHAMPIONS BRONZE CHAMPIONS PROMOTIONAL CHAMPIONS 03 WE ARE THE CREATIVE ECONOMY WELCOME Let's just be honest. This year has thrown us all for a loop. Some have been hit the hardest with the loss of family and friends. Others with the anxiety of job loss, change, homeschooling, or politics. As creative professionals, it feels as if the trauma of what’s happening is almost more personal. Most of our art is designed to be consumed in large gatherings. It's designed to bring people together. To share experience and energy. It's our identity. And 2020 feels like it's taken that away from us. Add that to all the other life challenges right now, and it's simply overwhelming. Ben Andrews When it comes to this pandemic specically, our doctors, nurses, and medical Founder | Seattle Film Summit professionals are the FRONT LINE. They are working tirelessly for all of us and, hopefully, a vaccine will come soon. And then some level of normalcy will return. And when it does, I believe creatives will become a front line of our own. We'll be allowed to share our art together again. We'll be able to share experiences without fear. And when that time comes, it will be our job to re-ignite the morale of a culture. To bring joy and ease back to this world. To that I say, prepare for this battle. Give yourself grace but move your voice forward. Rene your craft. It's happening already. The work is picking up. Creatives are in high demand again. Not just for their art but for their innovation. When we look back, we must view 2020 as the year that took our voice to the next level. Not the year that crushed us. In closing, I want to thank the sponsors, moderators, readers, panelists, writers (over 170) who donated their time and eorts to bring this experience to you. These are the people who are out there trying to elevate our creative community. They are truly my heroes. More importantly, I want to thank this summit team. You have no idea how many hours they spent reimagining this experience for you. Their names are below. I ask one thing. If you know these people, or even if you don't, reach out and thank them. It's been my honor to work with them in this turbulent year, and I know how much they love their creative community. Thank you for joining us, and I hope the next 21 days will bring you knowledge, wisdom, and creative elevation. Wissner Montclair State University No time like the past: Hearing nostalgia in The Twilight Zone Abstract Keywords One of Rod Serling’s favourite topics of exploration in The Twilight Zone (1959–64) Twilight Zone is nostalgia, which pervaded many of the episodes of the series. Although Serling Rod Serling himself often looked back upon the past wishing to regain it, he did, however, under- nostalgia stand that we often see things looking back that were not there and that the past is CBS often idealized. Like Serling, many ageing characters in The Twilight Zone often sentimentality look back or travel to the past to reclaim what they had lost. While this is a perva- stock music sive theme in the plots, in these episodes the music which accompanies the scores depict the reality of the past, showing that it is not as wonderful as the charac- ter imagined. Often, music from these various situations is reused within the same context, allowing for a stock music collection of music of nostalgia from the series. This article discusses the music of nostalgia in The Twilight Zone and the ways in which the music depicts the reality of the harshness of the past. By feeding into their own longing for the reclamation of the past, the writers and composers of these episodes remind us that what we remember is not always what was there.

A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.

It seemed more like two months. At times, even two weeks. Why? Because even though I have worked in TV for more than three decades, I have never seen our industry undergo such extraordinary — and extraordinarily exciting — changes as it has in recent years. Everywhere you turn, the vanguard is disrupting the old guard with an astonishing new technology, an amazing new show, an inspired new way to structure a business deal. This is not to imply that the more established segments of our industry have been pushed aside. On the contrary, the broadcast and cable networks continue to produce terrific work that is heralded by critics and rewarded each year at the Emmys. And broadcast networks still command the largest viewing audience across all of their platforms. With our medium thriving as never before, this is a great time to work in television, and a great time to be part of the Television Academy. Consider the 65th Emmy Awards. The CBS telecast, hosted by the always-entertaining Neil Patrick Harris, drew our largest audience since 2005.

Free from their parents’ rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family - whether it is the one you’re born into or the one you create – is something you can't run away from. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION The Kings of Summer began in the imagination of writer Chris Galletta, who penned his script during his off hours while he was working in the music department of “The Late Show with David Letterman.” After some false starts in screenwriting, Galletta shunned his impulse to write a high-concept tentpole feature and craft something more character-driven and personal.

  • I Had Well Over 1000 Hours of Time in the Air Before I
“I had well over 1,000 hours of time in the air before I entered combat. Most of that was as an instrument instructor fl ying the SNJ. Instrument fl ying really teaches you the fi ner points of fl ying an airplane. It also makes you focus and for some reason I found that it carried over to gunnery work in the Hellcat as well. Every time I got behind a Japanese airplane I was very focused as my bullets tore into them!” —Lin Lindsay Joining the fi ght I joined VF-19 “Satan’s Kittens” as one of its founding members in August of 1943. We gathered at Los Alamitos, California, and “Fighting Nineteen” was supplied with a paltry sum of airplanes; an SNJ, a JF2 Duck, a Piper Cub, and a single F6F-3 Hellcat. Most of them were not much to write home about as far as fi ghters go except of course, the F6F. To me, the Hellcat was a thing of beauty. It was Grumman made and damn near inde- structible! As a gun platform it was hard hit- ting with six .50 caliber machine guns in the wings, bulletproof glass up front and armor protection for the pilot. It was certainly bet- ter than anything the Japanese had, especially with self-sealing gas tanks, better radios, bet- ter fi repower and better trained pilots. 24 fl ightjournal.com Bad Kitty.indd 24 5/10/13 11:51 AM Bad KittyVF-19 “Satan’s Kittens” Chew Up the Enemy BY ELVIN “LIN” LINDSAY, LT.
