PAul AnTHonY noVellY (2000) President 2010– 2015 Chairman 2015– 2017

The Horatio Alger Association has been forever changed by the leadership team of Paul Anthony “Tony” novelly and david l. Sokol, who each served a combined total of seven years as president and chairman of the Association. mr. novelly served as the Association’s president from 2010 to 2015, and then as chairman from 2015 to 2017. during their years serving together, the two leaders helped to establish two new 501(c)(3) organizations, the Horatio Alger endowment Fund and the Horatio Alger Association of Canada, and a host of other programs and services that will benefit members and Scholars for years to come. during his tenure in office, mr. novelly’s personal vision was to greatly elevate public awareness about the Association through an ongoing national visibility campaign. As a proud member, mr. novelly felt that more Americans should know about the Association’s important mission, the values represented through presentation of the Horatio Alger Award, and the commitment of our members in helping young people through education to participate in the American dream. To increase visibility, the Association contracted with new communications firms in the united States and Canada. other public outreach activities have included the Association’s ongoing concert series, maintenance of state-of-the-art websites, increased use of social media, print and broadcast public service announcements, and expanded research projects.

Knowing that the Association’s future depends on its members, mr. novelly also focused on the induction of men and women who will remain committed to its mission throughout their lives. Steps were taken to ensure that individuals nominated for membership understand the lifelong nature of the commitment and the expectations and responsibilities required of members. His efforts have resulted in increased support for the annual Awards events and the attainment of the endowment Fund campaign goals.

To encourage the involvement of his fellow members, mr. novelly mandated that all members should be allowed to participate in events surrounding the annual Board of directors meeting. members may now convene twice a year, in the spring for the Awards events and in the fall for the membership and Board of directors meeting. To increase the already considerable camaraderie that exists among members, life Partners, and Friends, mr. novelly hosted and helped to underwrite two International Horatio Alger membership and Board of directors meetings, one in 2011 hosted in monte Carlo and Bordeaux, and the other in 2015 at venues in Venice, Paris, london, and the english countryside. At the concluding dinners at each of these meetings, with encouragement from mr. novelly and mr. Sokol, people pledged contributions to surpass the initial endowment Fund goal of $100 million (2011) and the $250 million goal (2015).

Additionally, mr. novelly continues to provide generous support to ensure that the Association is able to fund State Scholarships in all 50 states. He also initiated a scholarship program for students in Quebec in honor of his friend and fellow member, The right Honourable Brian mulroney. mr. novelly helped to create a $10 million endowment fund to establish a national scholarship program for students across Canada.

dAVId l. SoKol (2004) President, 2008– 2010 Chairman, 2010– 2015

While the 2015 International membership and Board of directors meeting was a time of great accomplishments and good fellowship, it also marked the end of tenure for the Association’s longest-serving chairman, david l. Sokol. He served as president and chairman of the Association from 2008 to 2015. during his time in office, the Association achieved unprecedented growth.

mr. Sokol was elected to serve on the Association’s Board of directors in 2005 and was appointed as a vice president on the executive Committee that same year. In 2007, Peggy and david Sokol chaired the Association’s 60th anniversary Awards celebration. In addition to being a generous sponsor of the Association’s endowment fund, he chaired the endowment campaign drive for several years in his capacity as the chairman of the long-range Planning Committee. As the endowment fund continued to grow, mr. Sokol worked closely with Walter Scott, Jr., Paul Anthony novelly, Joseph neubauer, dennis Washington, and other officers in establishing the Horatio Alger endowment Fund as a separate 501(c)(3). He and mr. novelly would also lead the successful drives to achieve the two goals set for the Horatio Alger endowment Fund. The initial goal of $100 million was achieved in 2011, and the increased campaign goal of $250 million was accomplished at the 2015 International membership and Board meeting. The increased fund is ensuring that Horatio Alger scholarships will be awarded to young people in perpetuity. mr. Sokol has been instrumental in the expansion of the Association’s scholarship programs. He personally funded Horatio Alger State Scholarships for students in South dakota for many years and played a key role in establishing the partnership with the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation in support of scholarships for students in nebraska and Western Iowa. Additionally, mr. Sokol pioneered the concept of the “Whole Scholar,” which inspired those involved with the Association to think of ways, beyond financial support, to assist Horatio Alger Scholars. This resulted in vastly increased services, including a 24/7 crisis line, college preparedness training, housing for foster students, mentoring and internship programs, and special assistance grants, which he and his life Partner, Peggy Sokol, personally funded. He has also mentored and hired several Horatio Alger Scholars for full-time positions. mr. Sokol welcomes each new class of national Scholars, and he has strengthened the esprit de corps by speaking at Alumni Summits, Field directors meetings, and other Association events.

Fortunately, the Association continues to benefit from mr. Sokol’s leadership and commitment through his service on the Horatio Alger endowment Fund Board of directors. mr. Sokol wrote a book titled Pleased, But Not Satisfied . This has become part of the Association’s lexicon, serving to remind everyone that while much has been accomplished, there is always more to be done.

The Horatio Alger Association is honored to be awarding the 2018 norman Vincent Peale Award to Chairmen emeriti david Sokol and Tony novelly, for their joint leadership and commitment, which has been instrumental in the rapid expansion of the Horatio Alger Association’s programs and activities on all fronts.

This report strives to understand the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of the most recent class of Horatio Alger national Scholars in comparison to young people nationwide. The results of the Association-sponsored State of our nation’s Youth survey are compared to the answers given by Horatio Alger Scholars in attendance at the national Scholars Conference.

The most recent report includes data from 2016 to 2017. The following selected key findings are highlights from Portraits of Contrast .

• 61 percent of Scholars live in a household with a family income level that is far below average, compared to just one-tenth of high school students who report similar circumstances.

• 57 percent of Scholars’ parents did not attend college, compared to only 25 percent of high school students nationwide.

• nearly all Scholars (96%) placed more emphasis on hard work than good luck when considering how one might achieve success in life. At 83 percent, a smaller but still large percentage of high school students nationwide similarly rated hard work over luck as the key to success.

• When compared to high school students, Scholars more often cite helping to promote racial understanding (66% vs. 52%) and making a contribution to science (62% vs. 38%) as essential or very important factors when thinking about their life goals.

• Scholars more often than their peers emphasize the need to make sure people of all races are treated equally (51% vs. 31%).

• Well over half (64%) of Scholars report that they work part time, compared to a much smaller proportion (32%) of students nationwide.

• Three-fourths (75%) of Scholars, compared to just more than half (56%) of all high school students, report feeling hopeful and optimistic about the future of the country.

An important long-term visibility opportunity was realized this winter with the dedication of the Horatio Alger Association/American Spirit Bridge at The national World War II museum in new orleans, louisiana. Following the 2014 membership and Board of directors meeting, hosted at the museum, members organized an individual drive to sponsor the bridge in honor of Association members who have served in the armed forces and loved ones who fought in World War II. We are honored to have a permanent affiliation with The national World War II museum, which has become one of the most visited museums in the nation. Through the generosity of members and friends, the American Spirit Bridge will proudly bear the Association’s name for all time. mEmBErs worKinG to incrEAsE nAtionAl visiBilitY
