IN RURAL MEXICAN VILLAGES by Ann Murdy , writer and photographer ay of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos as it is known in México, is a celebration of life. It is a time we honor and celebrate the lives of those who are no longer with us by constructing home altars, or ofrendas, in their memory and visiting their graves. An altar brings a Dloved one back to life, and relatives place on it all the things the person once enjoyed eating or drinking. Additionally, ofrendas include mementos, photos of the relative, and a glass of water and bread. The altars are adorned with marigold flowers which represent the fragility of life. A pathway of vibrant marigold petals is sprinkled from the outside of the home to the foot of the altar. This pathway, adorned with lit candles, guides the souls back to the home. Sweet- smelling copal, an incense-like resin, is burned to aid in communication with the spirits. The Spanish friars brought All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) to México in the sixteenth century. In order to convert the indigenous people to Christianity, the friars allowed the people of México to continue their death rituals in November of each year. The earliest festival was the Aztec Festival of the Little Dead, which took place in Tlaxochimaco, the ninth month of their calendar, July 24–August 12. This festival honored children who had died. The second festival, the Great Festival of the Dead, took place during Huey Miccailhuitontli, the tenth month, August 13–September 1.

Newsletter Articles _ _ _ All Saints’ Day _ Many churches in Australia mark All Saints' Day on November 1 each year to honour all the saints, particularly those who do not have their own special feast day. What do people do? All Saints’ Day is a day for many people of Christian faith in Australia to remember and honor the saints. Some churches hold a special service or mass on All Saints’ Day. Some masses may feature music composed during the Renaissance. Many Christian schools may have lessons for students to learn about the role of saints in the history of Christianity at this time of the year. Special masses are held and prayers are made. However, some news reports have stated that events such as All Saints’ Day are less recognized in Australia modern times. Background According to some sources, the idea for All Saints' Day goes back to the fourth century when the Greek Christians kept a festival on the first Sunday after Pentecost (in late May or early June) in honour of all martyrs and saints. Other sources say that a commemoration of “All Martyrs” began to be celebrated as early as 270 CE but no specific month or date is recorded. Pope Gregory IV made All Saints' Day an authorized holiday in 837 CE. It is speculated that the chosen date for the event, November 1, may have been an attempt to supplant the pagan Festival of the Dead (also known as Samhain or the feast of Saman, lord of death). All Saints' Day, which is celebrated globally, is closely tied with All Souls' Day, which was first instituted at the monastery in Cluny in 993 CE and quickly spread throughout the Christian world.

As the sun wanes, harsh weather looms on the horizon and many plants die or become dormant. Foliage changes its appearance stirring up a stunning atmosphere filled with shades of yellow, red, brown and green. During this unique time, a strange ritual of behavior takes place. Millions of people adorn their surroundings with images of witches, black cats, skeletons, ghosts, monsters, and spiders. Many will masquerade as devils, fairies, and ghouls. They attend parties as children parade through neighborhoods knocking on doors declaring “trick or treat,” expecting to receive candy or a gift. But is Halloween something Christians should observe? Where did this holiday come from? Why the hideous imagery with a dominant theme of witchcraft and death? Digging up Halloween’s Roots Few realize that our modern day Halloween celebrations can be traced to ancient times; long before the birth of Christ. The earliest accounts of its observance reveal that it was pagan Celts who linked the waning sun, and declining fruitfulness, with the chill of a lifeless grave. In the evening they go from door to door in the neighborhood and collect candy. The origin of Halloween goes back to the Celts, a tribe in Europe. They believed that on this day, the spirits of the dead come to the earth and steal their souls. They tried to drive off the spirits with scary masks. Coon Carnival, South Africa: Ben lives in Cape Town. Every year on January 2, a large carnival parade takes place in his home town. Ben and his friends also watch the colorful parade, with loud singing and lots of dancing. In the past, only slaves celebrated this festival to start the new year, because they had to work on New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Festival, China: Tao looks forward to the New Year’s Festival. The new year begins with a new moon between January 21 and February 21. Relatives that he otherwise sees only once a year come to visit at that time. Many of them stay with his family for two weeks, until the end of the festival. His mother decorates the house in red, because red is the symbol for good fortune and wealth. By the way, 2012 was the year of the dragon. Oktoberfest, Germany: Anna lives in Munich. She likes to go to the Oktoberfest, which takes place every year in late September.

The turning leaves and fresh crisp air unmistakably says “fall is here.” Fall has always been my favorite time of year (next to Christmas) and the smell as you walk down a dirt road is such a perfect reminder of the good old days. With fall comes canning, soup making, cookie baking and digging for that one recipe you swore you were going to make this year but you just can’t find it. The best part of fall is that it seems to be it’s own holiday. Like Christmas, this is the only time of year that you bake or make certain things HAPPY HALLOWEEN because it doesn’t seem to fit any other time. We gear up for hunting and having family and friends come from near and far to gather ‘round the table” for tales of the prior years hunt, or stories from so long ago you swear you must have read them in a book. So many of us have our “Deer Camp” stories and traditions, and the best ones are those shared with each genera- tion.
