E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In various parts of the world Fennel seeds Foeniculum vulgare has been used in a herbal medicine. The present study aims to shed light on fennel’s side effects in male rats in the weights , hormonal, histological changes and some of the physiological parameters of thyroid and testes. About 60 Spargue-Dawley albino adult male rats were daily fed with fennel pellet in three different doses (50, 100, 200)gm/kg bw for three different periods of time (10, 20, 30) days. After end of each experiment animals were weighed then it scarified for blood and tissue collection , blood collected by heart puncture then it centrifuged for serum separation and kept at -80oC to hormonal, biochemical analysis and some histological standards , then thyroid and testes were excised and fixed in neutral buffered 10% formalin for histological preparation. The results showed that increased doses of fennel consumption and treatment duration statistically caused Highly significant increase (p<0.01) in thyroid weights in experimental treated groups (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) while group (5 and 6) showed significant increase (p<0.05) compared to the control group. No changes illustrated in values of Thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) in all periods of time and in all concentrations of fennel in comparison with the control group. -

ARTICLE ▪ FDA Regulatory January 28, 2021 2020 Enforcement Review: FDA-Regulated Medical Products and Food Safety The dynamic nature of the COVID-19 pandemic demanded an all-hands-on-deck approach to enforcement in 2020 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), the Department of Justice Attorneys (“DOJ”), and other regulatory and law enforcement agencies. Protecting the public from those who Beth Weinman sought to exploit opportunities to make a quick buck by marketing quack COVID-19 cures, Josh Oyster unproven COVID-19 prevention products and substandard personal protective equipment quickly Jessica DeLalio emerged as top government enforcement priorities. While the bulk of the year’s most significant criminal and civil enforcement actions were pandemic-related, 2020 also saw noteworthy developments in more traditional areas of FDA enforcement. A global resolution of criminal and civil allegations against Purdue Pharma, which included allegations related to facilitating the dispensing of opioids without a legitimate medical purpose and inappropriate opioid marketing, incorporated the highest penalty ever assessed against a pharmaceutical manufacturer. In addition, four former executives of life sciences companies were sentenced in connection with misdemeanor misbranding offenses related to allegedly inappropriate marketing: two cases involving misleading statements made about an opioid use disorder drug and two cases involving the marketing of an FDA-cleared sinus spacer device for an unapproved drug delivery use. On the food safety front, FDA also resolved precedent-setting cases that included record criminal fines and penalties, including a deferred prosecution agreement with Chipotle tied to allegations of foodborne illness outbreaks. This review revisits the year’s key FDA and DOJ enforcement actions related to FDA-regulated products, and offers insights into likely enforcement priorities for 2021. -

PLUNKETT2 AND STEPHEN R. DOWNIE Department of Plant Biology, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801 Traditional sources of taxonomic characters in the large and taxonomically complex subfamily Apioideae (Apiaceae) have been confounding and no classi®cation system of the subfamily has been widely accepted. A restriction site analysis of the chloroplast genome from 78 representatives of Apioideae and related groups provided a data matrix of 990 variable characters (750 of which were potentially parsimony-informative). A comparison of these data to that of three recent DNA sequencing studies of Apioideae (based on ITS, rpoCl intron, and matK sequences) shows that the restriction site analysis provides 2.6± 3.6 times more variable characters for a comparable group of taxa. Moreover, levels of divergence appear to be well suited to studies at the subfamilial and tribal levels of Apiaceae. Cladistic and phenetic analyses of the restriction site data yielded trees that are visually congruent to those derived from the other recent molecular studies. On the basis of these comparisons, six lineages and one paraphyletic grade are provisionally recognized as informal groups. These groups can serve as the starting point for future, more intensive studies of the subfamily. Key words: Apiaceae; Apioideae; chloroplast genome; restriction site analysis; Umbelliferae. The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T ) and thyroxine which can sometimes be referred to as tetraiodothyronine (T ). This review attempts to summarize the highlights from these clinical trials. The efficacy of curcumin either alone or in conjunction with existing treatment was evaluated. Sixteen clinical trials have been conducted in osteoarthritis, 14 of which yielded significant improvements in multiple disease parameters. Eight trials have been conducted in type 2 diabetes, all yielding significant improvement in clinical or laboratory outcomes. Three trials were in ulcerative colitis, two of which yielded significant improvement in at least one clinical outcome. Additionally, two clinical trials on rheumatoid arthritis, one clinical trial on lupus nephritis, and two clinical trials on multiple sclerosis resulted in inconclusive results. Longer duration, larger cohort size, and multiple dosage arm trials are warranted to establish the long term benefits of curcumin supplementation. Multiple mechanisms of action of curcumin on these diseases have been researched, including the modulation of the eicosanoid pathway towards a more anti-inflammatory pathway, and the modulation of serum lipid levels towards a favorable profile. Overall, curcumin supplementation emerges as an effective therapeutic agent with minimal-to-no side effects, which can be added in conjunction to current standard of care.
