Die 68Er CARTOONS
Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov Series IV: Philology and Cultural Studies • Vol. 12 (61) No. 2 – 2019 https://doi.org/10.31926/but.pcs.2019.61.12.22 The German protests of ’68 as the source of humour in Die 68er CARTOONS Ioana Andreea DIACONU1 The paper presents a series of cartoons on the German student movement from the sixties created 50 years later and tries to identify the sources and mechanisms of humour as well as the trigger of laughter of the sketches. A short presentation of this movement, its importance and echoes to the present and the description of the cartoon technique are indispensable in understanding the cartoons. There will also be an attempt to place these works in the history of German cartoon. In the end, an attempt will be made to identify, whether the publication of translated versions of the examined cartoons would be in any way successful, or rather useless. Introduction At the 50th anniversary of the Protests of ‘68, the Caricatura – Galerie für komische Kunst (Caricatura - Gallery of Comic Art) in Kassel hosted the exhibition of 37 cartoonists on the 68 student movement in Germany, their cartoons being afterwards published by Saskia Wagner in the anthology Die 68er CARTOONS (Wagner 2018). The motivation of the event is given in the presentation of the exhibition and the book: “But what became of the so-called "old 68ers"? Where did the march through the institutions lead them? Are they still roughing up the establishment or are they part of it? Do they spontaneously re-create slogans? Do they let their descendants read to them from “the Capital”? The exhibition Die 68er CARTOONS looks for answers for these questions. -

The Industrial Workers of the World in Aotearoa Peter Steiner, 2006 etween 1908 and 1913 the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) were Ba small organisation in New Zealand whose infl uence was tremendous amongst working people. By means of hundreds of propaganda meetings, thou- sands of pamphlets and in particular their paper, the Industrial Unionist, the Wobblies (I.W.W. members) spread their revolutionary ideas wide and far. Th e big strike actions of 1912/13 can be attributed to workers uniting as a class inspired by revolutionary ideas. Th e transient nature of workers at that time also contributed to Wobbly ideas reaching every corner of the English speaking countries within a few years. However, it also made organising diffi cult due to the short-lived groups. Th e history of the I.W.W. challenges traditional histori- cal understandings, as historians tend to argue that, while workers lost in 1913, they were eventually victorious in 1935 with the election of the fi rst Labour Government. -

Transnational Nordic Sixties in the Radical Press, c.1958-1968 Bill Clinton, the first American president who belonged to the so-called baby boomer generation, once reflected on his own youth by saying: “If you look back on the 1960s and on balance, you think there was more good than harm, then you're probably a Democrat. If you think there was more harm than good, you're probably a Republican.”1 Whether we now live in a world where the sixties is treated with newly found appreciation or with even deeper resentment remains to be seen. But this quote begs the question: Who "owns" the Sixties? Who has the power to define its essence? Many have tried to use the Sixties and its legacy to explain current political and social phenomena. Let us take 75 couple of concrete examples: After his resignation, the former pope Benedict XVI wrote an essay to a German catholic paper Klerusblatt, aiming to explain the reasons for the paedophilia scandal that had devastated the catholic church. -

The Impact of John A. Lee's Expulsion upon the Labour Party IN MARCH 1940 the Labour Party expelled John A. Lee. Lee's dynamism and flair, the length and drama of the battle, not to mention Lee's skill as a publicist, have focussed considerable attention upon his expulsion. Almost all historians of New Zealand have mentioned it, and most have portrayed it as a defeat for extremism, radicalism, dissent or a policy of industrialization.1 According to one political scientist, although Labour did not quite blow out its metaphorical brains in expelling Lee, his expulsion heralded the victory of the administrators and consolidators.2 While few of those who have attributed a significance to Lee's expulsion have hazarded a guess at its effect .upon the Labour Party's membership or the party itself, Bruce Brown, who gave the better part of two chapters to the disputes associated with Lee's name, pointed out that 'hundreds of the most enthusiastic branch members' followed Lee 'out of the main stream of political life.'3 Brown recognized that such an exodus undoubtedly weakened the Labour Party although, largely because he ended his history in 1940, he made no attempt to estimate the exact numbers involved or the significance of their departure. This essay is designed to suggested tentative answers to both questions. Immediately after his expulsion Lee believed that radicals, socialists and even five or six members of parliament would join him. The first 1 For instance, W.H. Laurie Charnigo Prisoners of Microfilm Freeing Voices of Dissent in the Underground Newspaper Collection “We are a people, and a people must have their own voice, and that voice is the underground press.”1 - Thomas King Forcade 1. Bad juju I put the finishing touch on the display case in the lobby of our library, a sign in bold newsprint: “Come Explore the UPS Underground Newspaper 41 Collection (1963-1975)!” Stepping back to admire my creation, I almost had to brace myself against the dizzying psychedelic collage of graphics. This display screamed not only “Look at me!” but “Damn! I’m cool!” And oh how cool it was covered with photos, comics, and covers from a wide range of colorful Vietnam-era ‘underground’ newspapers. The bright art of Black Panther’s Emory Douglas shouted “Power to the People!” Psychedelic covers of the San Francisco Oracle flashed Vedic Motifs, bearded gurus, and hookah- smoking shamans. Gilbert Sheldon’s Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Trina Robbins’ feminist superheroes playfully danced throughout the display. There were photos of protesters marching for civil rights, gay rights, women’s rights, and in opposition to the war in Vietnam. There were raised fists of solidarity, peace signs, concert posters, a real lava lamp (which I hoped wouldn’t burn the library down), and covers of the Berkeley Barb, Avatar, the Los Angeles Free Press, and many others. Books about the Vietnam-era underground press were featured prominently throughout the display, such as Ken Wachsberger’s extensive Voices from the Underground series and John McMillian’s Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press and the Rise of Alternative Media Laurie Charnigo is education librarian at Jacksonsville State University in Alabama. -

Promoting Paradise: Utopianism And
New Zealand Journal of History, 42, 1 (2008) Promoting Paradise UTOPIANISM AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN NEW ZEALAND, 1870–1930 A NUMBER OF COMMENTATORS have identified a correlation between aspects of utopianism and New Zealand’s past. Miles Fairburn, for example, has emphasized the power of an arcadian myth in nineteenth-century New Zealand.1 James Belich entitled the second volume of his history of New Zealand Paradise Reforged.2 And Lucy Sargisson and Lyman Tower Sargent’s work on intentional communities (or communes) argued that New Zealand ‘has a special place in the history of utopianism’.3 As Sargisson and Sargent note, though, there has not been any extended discussion of the association between utopianism and New Zealand’s national identity. Fairburn’s work comes closest, but the ‘governing category’ of his landmark study was ‘the colony’s social organisation’ rather than arcadian myths.4 Furthermore, Fairburn’s work stops in the 1890s, ignores ideal visions of cities and towns, disregards utopian fiction, and does not take into account ‘race’ and politics and the impact which these had on images of arcadia. While ‘race’ and politics are central to Belich’s work his study remains first and foremost a general history. The use of the descriptor ‘paradise’, like his term ‘recolonization’ (which is used to signify New Zealand’s apparent return to the British imperial fold), works primarily as ‘a heuristic device … to give pattern’.5 Belich also overlooks utopian and science fiction (SF) literature, focuses on the printed word and skips over ‘booster’ sources, namely those civic and commercial publications produced locally to promote settlement and investment.
