4 INTRODUCTION
Only with knowledge can we free the world from hunger, malnutrition and poverty. According to the Basic Texts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Organization’s first function is to “collect, analyse, interpret and disseminate information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture”.
FAO plays a unique role as a neutral forum, providing unbiased, high-quality information across all areas relating to food, agriculture and sustainable natural resources management. In 2018 FAO published 829 publications, ranging from authoritative analysis for policy-makers and expert guidance for farmers to general knowledge for young people.
In addition to English, numerous reports were also produced in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
This catalogue includes a selection of the Organization’s most recent titles, as well as some older publications that have become references in their respective fields. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed by the United Nations and the international community in 2015, provide the roadmap guiding all of FAO’s work.

The tuff plane (i.e. the area of flat land) that characterizes all of south-western Rome has been carved over the course of time by small tributaries of the River Tiber (the banks of which lie a little further to the north), causing the formation of what we have come to know today as the hills of Rome. Thus, the entire valley in this area, the flat zone of the Circus Maximus and the current Viale delle Terme di Caracalla corresponds to the course of the tributary known as the Aqua Mariana (commonly referred to as Marrana), which, having risen in the area of San Giovanni in Laterano, separated the Palatine Hill from the Aventine. The current Via Gregorio Magno, leading towards the Colosseum, follows the course of another tributary, the line of which separated the Caelian and the Palatine Hills. 180 ISSN 0254-6019 Control of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia – A policy for coordinated actions
FAO ANIMAL PRODUCTION AND HEALTH
ANIMAL Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is an insidious disease that lingers in herds, causing significant morbidity and mortality. The policies to address the control and management of CBPP are in disarray at both the national and international levels. There has not been significant improvement in the efficacies of available vaccines or diagnostic assays for several decades. Classic strategies of mass vaccination and strict movement control that once were perceived as successful in rolling back the disease have largely fallen due to high LEAP costs, concerns of declining impact and growing public resistance. Officially, treatment with antibiotics is discouraged or prohibited, yet their use is widespread. CBPP is by all means an enigmatic disease, whose control probably requires a new paradigm or out-of-the-box thinking and executing approach. PRODUCTIONThe purpose of this document is to provide an evidence-based policy for the implementation of sound control of CBPP by all stakeholders at all levels – global, regional and national. It describes a road map to CBPP control that is cognizant of the situation on the ground. While not being prescriptive, the paper document includes examples of combinations of interventions and control measures that should offer the opportunity to improve impact and hence offer GUIDELINES AND HEALTHbetter livelihoods to livestock producers.
