Particularly, I examine how Pentecostal music artists have drawn inspirations from secular popular music scene particularly in the style of singing, dance movement, recording, marketing and the general performance context. The study examines the nature of Pentecostal music introduced by the European missionaries, the process of making Pentecostal music, and tries to establish the factors responsible for the similarities between Pentecostal music and secular popular music. The study seeks to find out the meaning and significance of the changing Pentecostal music to a popular style. It also traces the origin and growth of Pentecostalism and its sacred music, focusing on how this sacred music has changed over time specifically in Uganda. This ethnographic study has been developed using research findings, literature related to Pentecostal movements in Uganda and Pentecostalism in general, Pentecostal music and the secularization and sacralization processes. The study indentifies the actors of Pentecostal music and examines the artistic role each plays. In this study, I also outline a number of factors responsible for this emerging genre among them prayer, evangelization, income earning, entertainment, music awards together with the health and economic problems experienced by ordinary Ugandans as some of the issues addressed by Pentecostal music lyrics.

Author: Tom Akuma Supervisor: Frederic Bill Examiner: Malin Tillmar Academic term: VT18 Subject: Business Administration Level: Masters Course code: 5FE06E Abstract Pentecostalism has grown from its founding days in 1900 in Topeka, USA and has extended its reach to most parts the world including Africa where it took off in the 1970s and continues to grow with many mega churches being established. In addition to their main role of taking care of the spiritual development of their followers, many Pentecostal churches have begun to get involved in provision of social and economic goods and services. This has however attracted attention to the churches with some of them being labelled as businesses, their founders being considered as entrepreneurs hiding under the guise of churches and seen as exploiting their followers The purpose of the thesis is to explore, through research questions, if entrepreneurial activities are carried out in the Pentecostal churches in Uganda and if so, whether such activities can be considered productive, unproductive or destructive entrepreneurship and what their implications are. This qualitative study employed qualitative methods of data collection and deductive approach with primary data collected through semi-structured interviews with 6 members of Pentecostal churches in Kampala and 1 non-member that regularly goes to Pentecostal churches to get a feel of their activities. The findings show that there the Pentecostal churches carryout a number of entrepreneurial activities that address spiritual, social and economic aspects of the church members and the community.

    NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC ON MARRIAGE REGISTRATION Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) wishes to inform the general public that all marriages conducted in Uganda MUST be filed with the Registrar of Marriages. The public is reminded that only church marriages conducted in Licensed and Gazetted places of worship are registrable and it is the duty of the licensed churches to file a record of the celebrated marriages with the Registrar of Marriages by the 10th day of every month, the marriages conducted under the Islamic Faith and the Hindu faith must be registered within three months from the date of the marriage and the Customary marriages must be registered at the Sub-County or Town council where the marriage took place within six months from the date of the marriage. Wilful failure to register marriages celebrated by the Marriage Celebrants violates the provisions of the Marriage Act and criminal proceedings may be instituted against them for failure to perform their statutory duties. In this thesis, which is based on 14months of research in Kampala, Uganda, I explore how followers of this religion appropriate a discourse of prosperity and blessings, and how they utilise certain religious practices and relationships that are forged from the Pentecostal community in their efforts to mediate their futures and ‘move on up’ from a state of poverty. In particular, I discuss whether these practices and relationships can be seen as engendering transformative agency for these individuals. In doing so, I explore three themes that were prevalent in my data analysis: an everyday non-ecstatic speech act which is called ‘positive confessions’, ways of understanding poverty and dealing with situations of injustice, and patronage relationships between more wealthy and poorer members of the Pentecostal community.

    WEDDING GUIDELINES Booking: A wedding date should be booked at least Six (6) months in advance with the appropriate Watoto Church Administrator. (a) Couples must complete their Wedding Booking Form and submit it to the Administrator(s) before any booking is confirmed. (b) No wedding will be booked on a DATE that coincides with a significant Watoto Church Event(s). (c) Wedding Ceremonies on Saturday at any of the Watoto Church licensed Campuses i.e, (Downtown, Ntinda, Bweyogerere, Kyengera, Suubi and Gulu) shall be conducted at 9:00 am, 11:00am and 1:00 pm for a maximum running time of 90 (Ninety) minutes. No weddings will be conducted on Sunday at any of the Campuses. 1 (d) Couples who so desire may apply for their wedding ceremony to be conducted on any other day of the week. (e) No wedding will be conducted if a couple has not booked and confirmed their wedding date with the Administrator. 2. Application Forms All Wedding Application Forms issued by the Administration Office must be duly endorsed by the respective Cell leader and either Section or Zone Leader and the Pastors at least two months before the date of introduction in church. Application forms must be accompanied with (including everything else indicated on the Application Form): (a) An Original letter of blessing from the parents/guardians of the bride-to-be.
