CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.

Q&A: 'I have no right to hurt my viewers' - Editorial - Opinion - The Times of India Page 1 of 1 Printed from Q&A: 'I have no right to hurt my viewers' 30 Jun 2008, 0037 hrs IST When Soumitra Chatterjee was shooting for Dekha and Abar Aranye, young Suman Ghosh would constantly watch him. Some years down he sent Soumitra a script. Soumitra won his first National Award for Ghosh's Poddokhep. Ratnottama Sengupta met the icon: Q Fifty years after Apur Sansar, you're still the lead actor! In 1958, i started acting on-screen. I began as a child actor in theatre, got close to Sisir Bhaduri in his final years, and was with AIR when i portrayed Satyajit Ray's Apu. I didn't have to look back although the formidable Uttam Kumar was at the peak of his career. I went on to do 300 films that include 14 Ray's plus gems from Tapan Sinha, Mrinal Sen, Asit Sen, Ajoy Kar, Tarun Mazumdar. Q Name the high points of this career. Apu was a huge break that became a classic. Abhijaan and Zinder Bandi established me as a hero distinct from others. A divorced husband in Saat Pakey Bandha, an ageing poet in Dekha, the protagonist of Wheelchair, a swimming coach in Koni, teacher in Atanka, thief in Sansar Simantey... I dreaded getting stereotyped. Perhaps that explains my popularity. Q Are natural portrayals a high degree of performance or simply being yourself? Can natural behaviour give you a range of characters like Sandeep (Ghare Baire) and Ganga Charan (Ashani Sanket)? Both have negative tones.

Academic Social Research ISSN No. 2456-2645 A MOTHER’S ETERNAL LOVE FOR HER DAUGHTER: MAMTA Dr. Archana Durgesh, Dr. Pooja Singh & Ms. Pranjali Singh ABSTRACT Women form about half of the population of the country, but their situation has been grim. For centuries, they have been deliberately denied the opportunities for growth in the name of religion and socio-cultural practices. At the social-political plain, women suffered from the denial of freedom even in their homes, repression and unnatural indoctrination, an unequal and inferior status, rigid caste hierarchy and even untouchability. Religious tradition and social institutions have a deep bearing on the role and status of women. A woman in Indian society has been a victim of humiliation, torture and exploitation. There are many episodes of rape, murder, dowry, burning, wife beating and discrimination in society. Men predominate the Indian society, hence women are a victim of male domination in the respective sphere of life; especially in economic life, over decision making on resources, on the utilization of her earnings and her body. Hence, a woman’s life lies between pleasures at one end and danger at another end. This paper centers on a mother’s sacrifice for her daughter. A mother’s treasure is her daughter and she will love her more than her life same as a daughter loves her mother since the very day she opened her eyes. Whatever the relationship is between a mother and a daughter, there will always be this special bond and layers of happiness that surround them and this relationship sets the stage for all other relationships.
