CONTACT Ph 08 8945 2224 - Fax - 08 89450069 - Email - Web ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF DARWIN - 19th February, 2007On 19 February 1942, World War II was brought to the shores of Australia when the Japanese dropped bombs over Darwin. On this day 8 ships were sunk, 1 beached and lost, 3 were beached and later refloated and 11 were damaged. A section of the wharf was destroyed, killing 22 waterside workers. Over 243 people, both armed forces personnel and civilians died that day. Over the next 21 months, Darwin, Adelaide River, Katherine and Milingimbi in Arnhem Land were bombed 64 times. Whilst damage was considerable on the ground, the spirit of those who defended the northern front-line became more formidable and impenetrable than any other form of defence. There were approximately 1,066 civilian women and 970 children in Darwin. By 18 February 1942, over 2,000 people had been evacuated down south by ship, road or air. The Darwin City Council considers the Bombing of Darwin Services that are held on 19 February at the Cenotaph at 0930 each year to be significant in the Northern Territory Events Calendar. Events include the Territory Night Concert held on the Friday night, featuring local Territory artists such as the Whiskey Creek Band, Kate Oliver, Jackie Izod, Mike Foley to name a few. Saturday starts with a free concert at the Big Brekky held in the town square, the Beaut Ute Muster and Cavalcade Street parade. The main concert begins at 1600 at the museum grounds, featuring some of the hottest new acts in Australia, the Sunny Cowgirl, Paul Costa, Ronni Rae Rivers and Warren H Williams and more, through till midnight. Sunday begins at 1300 with Bush Poetry and Balladeers and will feature the funky Red Hot Poker Dots, Warren H Williams, Leslie Avril, Rob Luckey, the Luckey Bastards, Grant Luhrs and the Chook Raffle Band and others through untill 2300.     DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS ISSN 1441-5429 DISCUSSION PAPER 21/05 SOME ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF CHANGES TO GATE-SHARING ARRANGEMENTS IN THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE Ross Booth 1 SOME ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF CHANGES TO GATE-SHARING ARRANGEMENTS IN THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE 1 INTRODUCTION Whilst gate revenue as a source of revenue for the (member-owned win-maximising) clubs in the Australian Football League (AFL) is relatively small and declining as a proportion, it is still an important source of revenue difference between clubs, and potentially their on-field playing performance. Until 2000, gate revenue was shared between the home and away teams (after the deduction of match expenses), after which the policy was changed to allow the home team to keep all of the (net) gate receipts. In the AFL, membership income, reserved seat and corporate box income has never been shared, but the league does share the revenue from key income streams such as national TV broadcast rights (there is no local TV revenue), corporate sponsorship and finals. The AFL (1998) recommended in its Gate Sharing Discussion Paper to change the gate-sharing arrangements, because the intended equalising of gate revenue was not being achieved. Whilst net gate proceeds had traditionally been shared 50-50, membership and reserved seat income had not. This meant that a club playing in a large stadium with a large cash-paying crowd provided a good return for the visiting side. However, a club playing in a small stadium filled mostly with members and reserved seat holders had little room for a cash-paying crowd, and hence provided a poor return to the visiting team.

    DREAMTIME AT THE ’G AFL 2016 ROUND 10 SATURDAY MAY 28, 2016 ESSENDON V RICHMOND FACT SHEET LIBRARY DOUG NICHOLLS’ LITTLE KNOWN FOOTBALL TOUR In the AFL’s inaugural Doug Nicholls Round it is apt to consider a little known series of football matches organised by Nicholls for charity during World War II. He recruited an All Aboriginal team from Cummeragunja on the NSW side of the Murray River and Lake Tyers in Gippsland, for a series of games in Melbourne during June 1944. The Aborigines won their first match on June 10, 1944 against a combined Munitions Association team 10.12 (72) to 4.5 (29) at Merri Park. This match largely paid the players’ expenses. The more significant match was two days later against Northcote on the King’s Birthday Holiday, Monday June 12. Northcote was Nicholls’ old VFA team, and though the VFA opted not to field a senior grade in 1944 its junior body organised a competition comprising VFA “seconds” teams. This competition sanctioned the “throw pass” which permitted players to throw the ball provided it was done with two hands and below the shoulder. It was a skill that many members of the Aboriginal team were inexperienced with.
