Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 4 HISTORY: “Wallsend Est. 1883 – Inaugural Winners of the Black Diamond Cup” Australian football was introduced to the Newcastle area (New South Wales) in 1883 when the Wallsend Football Club was formed by miners from Ballarat. In 1888, the Black Diamond Cup, Australia's oldest existing and active sporting trophy, was first awarded to the champion team in the region. In 1888, a touring Fitzroy Football Club defeated Wallsend by 10 goals to 5. The following year, Wallsend defeated Fitzroy. Excerpts from the Wallsend Australian Football Club: Commemorative Program & Club History (1985), compiled by Ross Walters (Life Member 1985): Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 5 Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 6 Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 7 Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 8 NSWFA clubs of the day were playing for the Alexander trophies as West Sydney, City and Redfern joined the throng. The code enjoyed wide interest in the Newcastle district where by 1884 Newcastle City, Newcastle, Merewether, Northumberland, Hamilton and Wallsend together with the afore-mentioned Maitland were in existence. Wallsend maintained their connection with Sydney AFL when they played West Sydney at Wentworth Park on 7th July 1894 when "there were several thousand people present" which ended in a draw, West Sydney 1.9, Wallsend 1.9. Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 9 Reformation – Return to the League Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 10 The Black Diamond Australian Football League – Modern Era The Black Diamond Australian Football League (BDAFL) was formed in 2000 from a merger of the Newcastle Australian Football League and the Central Coast Australian Football League. The name "Black Diamond AFL" derives from the Black Diamond Cup which has been awarded to the Newcastle AFL Premiers since 1888 (Wallsend). During the 2000-2002 BDAFL seasons, Wallsend was amalgamated with West Newcastle under the guise of the ‘Demons’, winning a BDAFL premiership in 2001. This win was against Cardiff, with the scores being: WEST (21.9-135) d CAR (18.13-121). Seniors folded soon after this win. The Junior Club - Our First Premiership of the Modern Era In 1984 the Wallsend’s Under 17 Team under the guidance of Coach Ross Craney (who is still a coach and life member in the current Wallsend Swans with the Under 9’s) won the premiership. To celebrate the occasional the Club in collaboration with major sponsors, Compass Pools arranged a special bottling of forty dozen bottles of ‘Draytons Rich Port’ wine. In 2005 the local Wallsend community again backed the Swans and they re- entered the local, current junior competition. Today the Wallsend Swans are a very fast growing and friendly club for children from the age of 5 to 14 based at Bill Elliot Oval, Maryland. In the past five years we have seen extraordinary growth with a 300% increase in our numbers and have expanded the number of teams in the local league exponentially. Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 11 In 2011, we were recognised by NSW/ACT AFL as being one of the largest and most successful Auskick Centres in the Hunter Region Area, and our Auskick Coordinator (Sharon Beck) was awarded the “Regional Auskick Volunteer of the Year”. In 2013 the community spirit of the Swans was again recognised, with Julie Cox awarded the Newcastle Junior AFL’s Volunteer of the Year’. In 2015, Wallsend Swans finally saw some finals action after several years of being absent, with both our Under 15s and the Under 17s joint venture team with Lake Macquarie making it to the Preliminary Finals. This was a fantastic feat, especially for the Under 15s who comprised of predominantly new players who had only played together as a team for ½ the season. 2016 saw the Wallsend Swans branch out into Women’s AFL – the fastest growing component of AL – with our inaugural Youth Girls team, which was a joint venture with Lake Macquarie. This team grew and grew during the season and by the end of July were beating the No. 1 side. A feat which was very remarkable given many players had never played AFL previously. Once again in 2016, Wallsend’s commitment to volunteering was recognised with (i) John Fitter awarded Hunter Junior AFL’s Volunteer of the Year, and (ii) Darren Bird awarded Newcastle Volunteer Service Award. Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 12 Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 13 In 2017, the Wallsend Juniors finally had a Grand Final appearance with our Under 11s making it to the Giants Divisional Grand Final against Warners Bay. This was our first Grand Final in juniors in over 30 years and certainly in the modern Hunter Coast competition. Sadly, the dream run was not to be, and our boys and girls went down 59 to 33. Nevertheless, our players did us proud and achieved great heights with many new players to the game – well done!! Also, in 2017, our second year Youth Girls (again a joint venture with Lake Macquarie) made it to the Semi Finals against Newcastle City. The Swans Welcome Back Seniors 2018 was an exciting year for the Wallsend District Swans Junior ARFC as we finally see the addition of two Senior teams, a woman’s and men's team; plus, we enter the big league (BDAFL) and become re-badged under the Wallsend- West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans). The new Swans is an amalgamation of the Wallsend Junior Club and the resurrected West Newcastle club (the Demons) after a 20 year plus hiatus. The new Club sees the men and women playing in a new vibrant strip that plays on the classic Sydney Swan strip with a local icon replacing the Sydney opera house. This strip was designed by Wallsend Swans Junior life member Matthew Harwood. Waratah Oval will become the home of the Swans in 2018, when both the juniors and seniors become one under the ‘Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC’ banner. The inaugural women's team was initiated under 'Project Newcastle', with the help of NSW/ACT AFL, BDAFL and Hunter Coast.

  • AFL NSW/ACT STATEMENT 2021 AFL Sydney Community Football
AFL NSW/ACT STATEMENT Monday, 16 August 2021 AFL Sydney community football season cancelled It is with regret that AFL NSW/ACT has made the difficult decision today to cancel the 2021 AFL Sydney community football season due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 outbreak across Greater Sydney. This decision also extends to our NAB AFL Auskick programs in the region. The impacted competitions are: AFL Sydney Seniors AFL Sydney Harbour Juniors AFL Sydney Western Sydney Juniors All NAB AFL Auskick Centres We appreciate today’s announcement to cancel all AFL Sydney competitions for the season will disappoint our many players, coaches, umpires and volunteers who invest so much time, effort and energy in the season. AFL NSW/ACT shares in the immense disappointment to be unable to complete the 2021 competition in its entirety however today’s outcome is the unfortunate reality of the challenges the pandemic continues to throw at the community. AFL Sydney would like to take the opportunity to thank our stakeholders for the constructive feedback provided in enabling this difficult decision to be made. In reaching our decision, it became increasingly apparent that with the continued escalating health crisis there can be, understandably, no NSW Government sanctioned roadmap out of the lockdown for sport provided at the moment. It is equally clear that the timeframes of a possible return and ability to resume competitions are now not viable for winter sporting codes. Accordingly, no premierships, medals or awards will be given for 2021 cancelled competitions. We’d like to acknowledge the collegiate approach shown by our colleagues in the other major winter codes, particularly NSWRL, Football, Netball, Football, Rugby Union and Hockey, who have been forced to make similar heartbreaking decisions in relation to their own competitions.

  • Afl Ticket Scheme Proposal
2019 AFL TICKET SCHEME PREAMBLE The AFL Premiership Season and Finals Series attracts over 6.8 million attendees across stadia across the country, making it the most-attended sport in Australia. The 2018 AFL Finals Series drew crowds of over 700,000 patrons across various venues across the country, including a crowd of over 100,000 for the AFL Grand Final. The AFL Grand Final is recognised as Australia’s most prestigious single sporting event, attracting thousands of visitors to Melbourne each year and driving millions of dollars benefit to the local economy. The demand for AFL Grand Final tickets always outstrips supply and tickets to this event are some of the most sought after in Australian sport. The AFL Finals Series and AFL Grand Final are both very important parts of the football season for all AFL Clubs, regardless of whether they have qualified for the AFL Finals Series or the AFL Grand Final. The AFL believes that, given all Clubs play an active role in shaping the AFL Final Series, they should be given the opportunity to participate and with this in mind the AFL makes available AFL Grand Final tickets to all of them. The AFL’s fundamental role is to act as a collective for its Clubs and, after meeting the costs of running the AFL competition, AFL makes annual distributions to our clubs and annual grants to the various state bodies for the development of grass roots football. AFL’s capacity to continue to support the clubs and grass roots football in a financial sense is inextricably linked to key revenue streams and specifically the AFL Grand Final.
