Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 4 HISTORY: “Wallsend Est. 1883 – Inaugural Winners of the Black Diamond Cup”

Australian football was introduced to the Newcastle area () in 1883 when the Wallsend Football Club was formed by miners from Ballarat. In 1888, the Black Diamond Cup, 's oldest existing and active sporting trophy, was first awarded to the champion team in the region. In 1888, a touring defeated Wallsend by 10 goals to 5. The following year, Wallsend defeated Fitzroy.

Excerpts from the Wallsend Australian Football Club: Commemorative Program & Club History (1985), compiled by Ross Walters (Life Member 1985):

NSWFA clubs of the day were playing for the Alexander trophies as West Sydney, City and Redfern joined the throng. The code enjoyed wide interest in the Newcastle district where by 1884 Newcastle City, Newcastle, Merewether, Northumberland, Hamilton and Wallsend together with the afore-mentioned Maitland were in existence. Wallsend maintained their connection with Sydney AFL when they played West Sydney at Wentworth Park on 7th July 1894 when "there were several thousand people present" which ended in a draw, West Sydney 1.9, Wallsend 1.9.

Reformation – Return to the League

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 10 The Black Diamond Australian Football League – Modern Era

The Black Diamond Australian Football League (BDAFL) was formed in 2000 from a merger of the Newcastle Australian Football League and the Central Coast Australian Football League. The name "Black Diamond AFL" derives from the Black Diamond Cup which has been awarded to the Newcastle AFL Premiers since 1888 (Wallsend). During the 2000-2002 BDAFL seasons, Wallsend was amalgamated with West Newcastle under the guise of the ‘Demons’, winning a BDAFL premiership in 2001. This win was against Cardiff, with the scores being: WEST (21.9-135) d CAR (18.13-121). Seniors folded soon after this win.

The Junior Club - Our First Premiership of the Modern Era

In 1984 the Wallsend’s Under 17 Team under the guidance of Coach Ross Craney (who is still a coach and life member in the current Wallsend Swans with the Under 9’s) won the premiership. To celebrate the occasional the Club in collaboration with major sponsors, Compass Pools arranged a special bottling of forty dozen bottles of ‘Draytons Rich Port’ wine.

In 2005 the local Wallsend community again backed the Swans and they re- entered the local, current junior competition. Today the Wallsend Swans are a very fast growing and friendly club for children from the age of 5 to 14 based at Bill Elliot Oval, Maryland. In the past five years we have seen extraordinary growth with a 300% increase in our numbers and have expanded the number of teams in the local league exponentially.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 11

In 2011, we were recognised by NSW/ACT AFL as being one of the largest and most successful Auskick Centres in the Area, and our Auskick Coordinator (Sharon Beck) was awarded the “Regional Auskick Volunteer of the Year”. In 2013 the community spirit of the Swans was again recognised, with Julie Cox awarded the Newcastle Junior AFL’s Volunteer of the Year’.

In 2015, Wallsend Swans finally saw some finals action after several years of being absent, with both our Under 15s and the Under 17s joint venture team with Lake Macquarie making it to the Preliminary Finals. This was a fantastic feat, especially for the Under 15s who comprised of predominantly new players who had only played together as a team for ½ the season.

2016 saw the Wallsend Swans branch out into Women’s AFL – the fastest growing component of AL – with our inaugural Youth Girls team, which was a joint venture with Lake Macquarie. This team grew and grew during the season and by the end of July were beating the No. 1 side. A feat which was very remarkable given many players had never played AFL previously. Once again in 2016, Wallsend’s commitment to volunteering was recognised with (i) John Fitter awarded Hunter Junior AFL’s Volunteer of the Year, and (ii) Darren Bird awarded Newcastle Volunteer Service Award.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 12

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 13 In 2017, the Wallsend Juniors finally had a Grand Final appearance with our Under 11s making it to the Giants Divisional Grand Final against Warners Bay. This was our first Grand Final in juniors in over 30 years and certainly in the modern Hunter Coast competition. Sadly, the dream run was not to be, and our boys and girls went down 59 to 33. Nevertheless, our players did us proud and achieved great heights with many new players to the game – well done!! Also, in 2017, our second year Youth Girls (again a joint venture with Lake Macquarie) made it to the Semi Finals against Newcastle City.

The Swans Welcome Back Seniors

2018 was an exciting year for the Wallsend District Swans Junior ARFC as we finally see the addition of two Senior teams, a woman’s and men's team; plus, we enter the big league (BDAFL) and become re-badged under the Wallsend- West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans). The new Swans is an amalgamation of the Wallsend Junior Club and the resurrected West Newcastle club (the Demons) after a 20 year plus hiatus. The new Club sees the men and women playing in a new vibrant strip that plays on the classic Sydney Swan strip with a local icon replacing the Sydney opera house. This strip was designed by Wallsend Swans Junior life member Matthew Harwood. Waratah Oval will become the home of the Swans in 2018, when both the juniors and seniors become one under the ‘Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC’ banner.

The inaugural women's team was initiated under 'Project Newcastle', with the help of NSW/ACT AFL, BDAFL and Hunter Coast. Its aim was to add a new women's team within the Newcastle LGA. The Swan's jumped at this idea, given the growth of women's AFL in Australia and ability to provide a pathway to senior footy for our youth girls. With the help of NSW/ACT AFL, the BDAFL and various Swans committee members, the women's senior team has become a reality in 2018 and played their first game at Rose Point Park, Singleton in Round 1. Darren Bird became the Swans inaugural female coach and Sarah Leslie their captain.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 14 The men's senior team started life as a flicker of light at the end of 2017 but has become a sleeping giant at the season's dawn, with close to 25 players (possibly more) likely taking the field in Round 1. The success of this team has been the hard work of the Swans committee, the BDAFL and coach / player Ryan Davis who has actively sought out past and current players (whilst carrying out training duties). The team represents many AFL leagues, with players coming from Victoria, South Australia, Western Australian and the ACT, and many from Newcastle City and other Hunter Clubs. The team also saw the return of several recent Juniors players who came back to Swans to play seniors for their Club. The team was led by sandgroper Aiden Bartley who was the inaugural men's captain.

Both our Senior teams had great victories in 2018, with our Women tasting their first win at Bateau Bay, whilst our Men had a couple of wins, with the most memorable winning the inaugural Heritage Round against the Wyong Lakes Magpies in August. The Heritage Round was memorable as our players played in the old West Newcastle ‘Demons’ strip.

2018 represented a new history for Seniors for the Swans with 2019 building on the success.

What is NAB AFL Auskick

In weekly sessions kids will explore the world f AFL, building their football skills and playing in a safe and super fun session. These sessions are open to both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 8 (and sometimes outside these ages). The sessions are run by AFL accredited coaches. Parents are encouraged to participate.

The AFL Auskick program has centres that operate all over the country, check the website for details: http://www.aflauskick.com.au/

Children will learn the fundamental game skills vital for future junior football participation as well as learn how to interact with other children as part of a team in small group activities and mock games.

The program also provides a great opportunity for parents to interact with their kids through the activities, have the opportunity to make new friends, learn about the game and spend quality time with their children.

Details for the 2019 Season:

• Auskick will be run at Bill Elliott Oval (Maryland Drive, Maryland) from 5 to 6pm on Friday nights; from 6th April to mid-August 2019. The Club (dependant on parent volunteers) will put on light refreshments for the children following the session at a minimal cost.

• This year the Warners Bay Club will host the Auskick Gala Day (Official Hunter Launch). It is on Friday 12th April from 5.30pm-7.00pm at Feign Oval, Warners Bay. The event will include AFL activities and refreshments. Final confirmation TBC.

• Level ‘O’ AFL coaching for all interested Auskick and Junior parents will be held on Friday 3 May (TBC) at Bill Elliott Oval, from 5.00-6.00pm. This will cover the basics of AFL from handballing, marking to kicking; and some of the rules. NSW/ACT AFL will run the session. The NAB will be holding their sponsor sausage sizzle on this night.

• Auskick packs will be distributed by NSW / ACT AFL in 2019 ands will be sent once a player registers and had made the $100.00 payment. Registration is via the Sports TG link on the Wallsend West Newcastle Swans website and following the Auskick prompts: http://www.wallsendwestnewcastle.sportingpulse.net. The Auskick pack includes a size 2 footy – so no need to buy a footy.

• Half-Time Auskick is on Saturday 29 June (from 4.10 pm) during the vs. Gold Coast game at the SCG (Sydney). Travel is via own vehicle or the Club can look at hiring a bus (at cost) depending on parent’s preferences. This is a great day for the kids (and parents) as

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 24 they get to play on the big stage during a premier AFL game – typically they are shown on TV and prior to entering the game the Swans put on a heap of activities. Wallsend generally gets enough tickets to cover 9 kids plus 1 parent, coach and goal umpire (so 20 tickets all up). TBC

With respect to training needs for the Auskick season: - the children only need shorts and a t-shirt, though likely something warmer in winter (and it may pay if its old clothes – the kids tend to get a tad dirty). If you have footy boots that is a bonus, but not a necessity – if you chose to buy boots only get the stock standard. Rebel, BigW etc. sell footy boots at a reasonable price. The club will supply bibs during the session and when we have some practice matches with other clubs the Club has a full set of Swans Auskick jerseys for them to wear.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 25 PRE-GAME/ PRE-TRAINING - NUTRITION & HYDRATION INFORMATION (JUNIORS) - Compiled by Darren Bird (2019 Vice-President & Senior Women’s Coach – Wallsend Swans)

AFL Football takes a lot out of the body from depleting energy stores to the toll of physical contact. Most professional players prepare their bodies for the game by following a good fitness regime, but they also need to eat correctly before and after the game to they have sufficient energy to get through a full game and help their bodies recover afterwards.

When we train or play a game, our bodies energy reserves especially carbohydrate (energy) stores are reduced significantly. This is why it is essential to replenish these after every training session or after every match. But it doesn’t just stop there, it is also important that carbohydrate recovery is continued right up until the start of the match.

A pre-game intake of carbohydrate ensures that you will have enough of this essential energy source to compete at 100% for the whole game and not run out of energy as the game goes on, which can quite easily happen, if your carbohydrate stores are not fully loaded.

With the junior grades, it’s quite common to see members of a lower grade team “play-up” a grade to ensure the higher grade has enough numbers. When this occurs, it is extremely important to ensure that the children re-fuel with a carbohydrate-based snack to ensure they’re able to continue playing without issue.

What should you eat before the game? – I have had many of the Wallsend West Newcastle Swans parents ask me what sort of things should their child(ren) be eating before & after matches as well as before & after training. One thing I nearly always say to them, is that it’s important that the pre-game/pre-training meal is something they like. Most of the professional AFL footballers have a favourite pre-game meal that they will have regularly before heading out onto the field.

Usually the pre-game/pre-train meal follows a few basic guidelines such as; High in complex Carbohydrates, Low in Saturated Fat and with a little bit of Protein. It should be something that they enjoy and are comfortable with. Along with the meal, it is important to remember that adequate fluids (water or juice) need to be incorporated into the pre-game/pre-training preparation as well to ensure that they are adequately hydrated.

The timing of the pre-game meal is also an important consideration as eating too close to the game can cause a stomach upset, while having something too far in advance can mean you are hungry during the game.

Most fitness studies & sports trainers recommend that we eat our pre-game/pre- train meal about 2 - 4 hours prior to the game, as this allows enough time for the food to pass through the stomach and into the intestines where it can be absorbed for use. The exact timing can vary hugely from person to person, without getting

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 26 too technical; one persons metabolism (how our bodies turn our food into fuel) can be much quicker or slower than another persons, and factors depending on the amount of protein, the amount of carbohydrate and the amount of fat can play a significant role in how long it can take that food to be used as fuel.

The idea of us parents getting up earlier on a Sunday morning to ensure that our children’s bodies are adequately fuelled for their 9am match isn’t all that enticing, but neither is loading them up with a Bacon and Egg roll 10mins before they play their game.

As a compromise, what I would encourage you to do is ensure that the children have some form of food at least an hour before the game. The meal doesn’t need to consist of Sausages and Bacon with Eggs on Toast; it can be as simple as a quality breakfast cereal or porridge with milk, or Toast with Peanut butter & Banana. It’s important to make sure that we have something to use as fuel so they’re able to run all match and perform at their peak.

Some Pre-Game/Pre-Train meal examples are as follows;

• Breakfast Cereal or Porridge with milk Toast, Muffins or Bagels with a Banana, Avocado, Jam, Honey, Peanut butter or Vegemite • Baked Beans or Tinned Spaghetti on toast • Pasta or Noodles (Not 2-minute noodles) • Small Sandwiches or Bread rolls • Creamed Rice with fruit • Rice or Noodle Stir Fry • Smoothies with Fruit like Banana’s or Strawberries

Please note that the above items are not an exclusive list and are just some suggestions that I’ve used with the athletes from the Australian Alpine Institute of Sport and have been found to be beneficial in making sure that they’re adequately fuelled for their activity.

Hydration

Something that is quite often misunderstood or overlooked is importance of adequate Hydration. Most people are of the assumption that we only need to drink when we’re thirsty. Research has shown that our bodies are at least 30% dehydrated before the thirst reflex is activated. Meaning, that when your body tells you that you’re thirsty; you’re already at least 30% dehydrated and even at that level, mild dehydration can decrease performance by up to 50% and place unnecessary stress on your body.

Hydration is a hugely important factor for AFL Footballers and Athletes in general. Making sure you drink enough fluid in the lead up to the game is just as important as eating properly. It’s a good idea to continually consume fluids at your pre- game/pre-training meal stage, as well as the lead up to the match. It is also extremely important to ensure that you re-hydrate during the match as well. The Wallsend West Newcastle Swans trainers are constantly on the field ready to

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 27 provide you with water to help re-hydrate you throughout the match. Don’t be scared to ask for some!

There are a few misconceptions about what to drink and we need to keep in mind that some drinks such as soft drinks like Coke or Fanta & energy drinks like Red Bull or V, can further dehydrate us as they are loaded with sugar and/or caffeine. Whilst they may give you an initial kick, it’s highly likely that consuming these drinks before you play a game will only further increase your level of dehydration. The best & simplest thing to consume to make sure you are adequately hydrated before, during and especially after a game is water.

Some electrolyte restoration drinks like Gatorade or Powerade can also be beneficial short term, especially if a player is about to play-up a grade after having already played a full game in a lower age group, however, we should also be aware that these drinks can also cause slight dehydration afterwards as they do contain a reasonable amount of sugar.

Making sure that we’re adequately hydrated is something that we all can do, and this one factor alone can help us all perform so much better. A simple thing we can do is for each one of you have your own water bottle with you for training and before the games so you’re able to make sure your hydration level is at its best and therefore helping you play at your best.

The tips I have outlined above have been written down in an attempt to help our parents and children get the most out playing AFL. The coaches and the committee for the Wallsend Swans Junior AFL love the game, and we want to the best for each member of the club and felt that after fielding questions from parents asking about what sort of food or drinks their children should be consuming in order for them to perform to the best of their ability on and off the field, we as a coaching group, decided to put this handout together.

I have tried to keep this handout easy to read and understand, but should you have any questions, or need any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me either at training, at the games or via my phone which is listed below. I’d be more than happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 42 GOOD SPORTS

Wallsend West Newcastle (Swans) ARFC is a ‘Good Sports’ accredited Club – Level 3; with our management policies available on our website. Wallsend West Newcastle Swans canteen provides healthy food options on game day.

Good Sports is a national community health initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) delivered free to community sporting clubs to develop safer and healthier communities.

Good Sports is a 3-level accreditation-based program delivered by Good Sports Project Officers who work directly with sports clubs in assisting them to become healthier, more viable, happier and more family-oriented members of the community and less focused on the consumption of alcohol at high risk levels and unhealthy foods.

Good Sports assists clubs to provide leadership in their community and role model the positive environment sporting clubs must be. Displaying the Good Sports logo sends and important message to club members and the community. It confirms that the club promotes a responsible attitude towards alcohol management and best practice, and that it provides a safe, healthy environment for players, members, families and supporters. Program participation also sends a strong message to authorities concerning a club’s ability to self-manage issues such as alcohol in sport and the increasing rates of obesity.

The program applies equally to clubs with or without a liquor license, as clubs in general are being held more accountable for the behaviour of their members, especially at sponsors venues such as licensed clubs and pubs, as community standards have shifted heavily in their tolerance of alcohol related antisocial behaviour, including drink driving.

Additionally, clubs that manage alcohol very well in their club or do not have an alcohol culture (e.g. juniors only sporting clubs) often find it difficult to obtain recognition for their responsible management of this issue.

Good Sports was developed to achieve safer and healthier communities. The program works to create sustainable change around the responsible service and/or consumption of alcohol and provide healthier food and drink alternatives. It has been developed primarily to:

• Change the behaviour of players, supporters and members of community sports clubs.

• Increase the viability and positive impact of sporting clubs in their communities.

• Reduce alcohol related problems such as drink driving, binge drinking, unlicensed alcohol sales and underage drinking.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 43 • Assist committees in risk managing their clubs regarding alcohol management.

• Provide a healthier environment for everyone, especially children through smoke free environments and healthier foods and drinks within canteens.

Good Sports’ major funders are Transport for NSW and the Australian National Preventative Health Agency (ANPHA) and the program has been endorsed by key sporting bodies including NSW RL, NSW/ACT AFL, Cricket Australia, Baseball NSW and Rugby Union NSW. Good Sports has been underpinned through the Hunter New England region through community partnerships with LGA’s including Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton, Dungog, Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Armidale Dumaresq, Glen Innes, Inverell, Moree Plains, Narrabri and Gwydir Shire.

Benefits to Sporting Clubs

• Free of charge participation (incl Good Sports resources and accreditation merchandise).

• Provision of financial subsidy for members to undertake the RSA course.

• Assist in protecting and attracting club sponsorship.

• Creates an increased awareness within clubs regarding their legal & social responsibilities.

• Increases the opportunity for membership and revenue growth.

• Club recognition via media news stories and advertising of Good Sports

Benefits to Communities

• Increased level of responsibility taken by sporting clubs for member behaviour.

• Reduced level of alcohol related incidents from sports clubs and/or their sponsor venues.

• Reduced violence, noise, injury and vandalism.

• Reduced drink driving incidents

• Younger people protected from alcohol misuse.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 45 FUNDRAISING

BUNNINGS (WALLSEND) BBQ

Apart from the Game Day canteen take, our major fundraising is done through the Community BBQs sponsored by Bunning’s Wallsend. This raises much needed funds to help purchase near equipment, apparel and keep our registration costs down low. As such we need all hands-on deck to help on these days; from 8.30am to 4pm – if you can an hour or more that would be great. Please mark down these dates in your diary or on your phone – as they are our BBQ dates:

• Sunday 24 March 2019 • Sunday 27 October 2019 • Sunday 24 November 2019

MCDONALDS (WALLSEND) ‘FAMILY FUN NIGHTS’

Maccas ‘family fun nights’ also help the club raise money.

These are part of our sponsorship deal with Wallsend McDonalds. We have to do 4 for the year. We need a minimum of 30 people to participate for a meal, between 6.30 and 7.30pm on our nominated days (Wednesday after training) and the Club gets 10% of the take for the hour across the whole store (incl. drive-thru and Café). Last year we made around $1500 for the Club – so please make sure you (all members, junior and senior, family and friends) join us for a meal and help raise funds for the Club.

Please mark down these dates in your diary or on your phone – as they are our fun night dates:

• Wednesday 8 May 2019 • Wednesday 19 June 2019 • Wednesday 24 July 2019 • Wednesday 28 August 2019

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 47 WALLSEND WEST NEWCASTLE SWANS INDIGENOUS ROUND

Saturday 15 June 2019 – Indigenous Round – Wallsend West Newcastle Vs Newcastle City, at Bill Elliott Oval, Maryland, from 11.00am onward.

On Saturday 15 June 2019 (Round 9), the Wallsend West Newcastle ARFC will celebrate its 'Indigenous Round' against Newcastle City, at Bill Elliott Oval, Maryland Drive in Maryland (Newcastle City LGA). Activities start from around 11am onwards. The Indigenous Round celebrates and recognises indigenous players and culture, and is named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation and played 54 games for Fitzroy.

The Club has commissioned a special indigenous jersey (as shown on this page). This jersey was designed by NSW indigenous artist Maree Bisby, who is a close friend of two of our senior inaugural and indigenous players, Sarah and Micheal Livesey, who originally requested the round.

The Club thanks Veolia and The Family Hotel, who are the major sponsors of our Indigenous Jersey and the day; and the Club intends inviting local Awabakal members to undertake a smoking ceremony, followed by an ‘Acknowledgment of Country’ by Aboriginal club members.

The agenda of the day will be:

• 11.30am acknowledgement of country – Sarah / Micheal Livesey (Swans), • 11.40am Smoking ceremony – Awabakal L.A.L.C, • Women kick off at 12pm (including presentation of the Kauma Cup), and • Men kick off at 2pm (including the presentation of the Cleaver Cup).

The indigenous round will also celebrate the Cleaver Cup (‘King of the Castle’) between the Wallsend West Newcastle and Newcastle City men. The cup is in honour of Jayson Cleaver who played for the combined Wallsend and West Newcastle team in 2001 when they took out the Grand Final and since then he has played with Newcastle City. The women (Wallsend West Newcastle and Newcastle City) will play for the ‘Kauma Cup’, which means to assemble or meet. It was suggested by Awabakal’s Culture & Heritage Officer Peter Townsend, who thought it was an excellent choice, stating ‘to meet and or assemble is what any sporting event is about’, and the Swans agree. Both these cups will become annual events in both Clubs fixtures.

So Swannies, parents, friends and supporters come and cheer on the Red and White and make our Indigenous Round a Memorable day.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 48 HUNTER CENTRAL COAST PRIDE AFL CUP

Saturday 4 May 2019 – Pride Cup – Muswellbrook vs. Wallsend West Newcastle, Weereman Field, Muswellbrook, from 11.00am onwards.

On Saturday 17 August 2019, the Wallsend West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) will celebrate its Pride Round with the Wyong Lakes AFC, at Bill Elliott Oval, Maryland Drive in Maryland (Newcastle City LGA). This will become an annual event between the two clubs and as such a Pride Cup (‘Hunter Central Coast Pride AFL Cup’) has been commissioned for both the men and the women (so ‘two’ cups). This will become the first Pride Cup for Regional NSW and will be the ‘kick-off’ event for the Newcastle Pride Festival Week, that runs from 17 August to the 26 August 2019, and is highlighted by the Pride Fair Day at the Foreshore Park, (in the vicinity of the Carriage Sheds) Wharf Road, Newcastle East (from 11am to 6pm). Please note: this game replaces the Pride Round originally slated for the 4 May against Muswellbrook, which had to be cancelled due to wet weather.

The Pride Round is about celebrating diversity and inclusion in sport and the fight against discrimination and homophobia and was suggested to the club by former player Ashlea Finn. She previously helped organise a Pride Round with Rainbow Jerseys in 2018 when she was a player at Muswellbrook; and she passionately notes:

'Every person that is part of our club the mighty swans brings their own strengths and contributes something valuable to their team and ultimately to the rise of the SWANS!!... Diversity encompasses everything and everyone one!! Which means gender, cultural background, sexuality, what origin team you go for (GO THE BLUES!!) and anything that makes you great!! Inclusion is about accepting that everyone is different and accepting them for who they are'.

The rise of support for women playing AFL is a perfect example of how important diversity and inclusion really is to our community. And this wave is engulfing AFL in the Hunter with the strong growth of Women and Youth Girls football at all levels. The Wallsend West Newcastle Swans are very proud of this initiative and welcome our involvement. The Swans prides itself as a strong family and community club, promoting inclusion at all levels, whether it is sexually, religious or cultural. The Swans see diversity in sport as the future growth area for our club and as such strongly support the Pride Round and its meaning. The Swans have commissioned a special Pride Jersey for the day; and the rainbow theme (as per National AFL) will be prominent on the day (e.g. socks, flags, ground markings etc.), with all our players and supporters.

The Swans thank The Family Hotel, Newcastle Pride and Highlite Fitness are sponsors of the jerseys, the cups and the day.

The agenda of the day will be:

• Women kick off at 12pm (including presentation of Women’s Pride Cup), • Auskicks – Wallsend West Newcastle and Wyong, • Men kick off at 2pm (including presentation of Men’s Pride Cup), and • Pride Party at The Family Hotel, 6.30pm onwards.

So, all Swannies, parents, friends and supporters... please come to Bill Elliott Oval on Saturday August 17 and support our Pride Cup Round and help us promote diversity at all levels in sport. It would be great to get as many there as we can to cheer on the Red and White to victory. The Club has also secured for the day AFL Hunter Central Coast’s inflatable kickboard for the kids.

Next year’s Pride Cup will be at Wyong Lakes, making this an M1 Derby Event, between the Hunter and the Central Coast.

Wallsend – West Newcastle ARFC (The Swans) Handbook – Season 2019 52 NEWCASTLE CITY GROUND WEBSITE / WET WEATHER DETAILS

The Newcastle City Council ‘Ground Information App’ was officially launched on Sunday, 1 April 2018. This application and associated website detail the ground conditions for all Newcastle City sports grounds and whether or not a ground is open or closed due to wet weather.

Council staff are responsible for assessing all sportsgrounds between the hours of 6:30am and 2:00pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), with seasonal Licenced Users (such as Wallsend Swans) responsible for assessing all sportsgrounds outside these times (including weekends and public holidays).

The Club President, Vice President and Coaches have access to the Grounds App to carry out the appropriate ground assessment during non-Council times and during periods of inclement weather. If rain / inclement weather sets in during match day, Club staff will undertake appropriate ground assessments prior to matches to determine if Bill Elliott or Waratah No. 5 is suitable to play on. The Club has the responsibility of ensuring that the ground is safe to play on and that it remains in good condition. In instances where wet weather precludes ongoing play the Club will close the ground. On match day this role will fall to the Club’s Ground Manager (not the umpiring staff).

In 2019, Wallsend is the licensed user of two grounds: (i) Bill Elliott Oval (Maryland Drive, Maryland) – main ground for junior and senior matches, and training ground for juniors; and (ii) Waratah No. 5 Oval (Waratah, via Young Street in Georgetown) – main training ground for Seniors and some junior grades (U13 and U15 on Wednesdays).

If you would like to view the application please visit grounds.newcastle.nsw.gov.au On the first occasion you may wish to bookmark the website to provide you with an icon on your device screen for quick access in the future (if viewing the app on a PC you will need to open with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, safari or similar)

The ground status is also available to the public at www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/Groundinfo.
