  • WELFARE in the FCT the SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION by Ann Gugler
WELFARE IN THE FCT THE SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION By Ann Gugler Mr John Butters, the First Commissioner of the Federal Capital Commission (FCC) called a meeting in May 1925 with the purpose of forming a Social Service Association. Attending the meeting were representatives from all the camps and settlements with the exception of Oaks Estate, Hall and other old villages in the district. The SSA was eventually formed and replaced the numerous Progress Associations already in operation. Following the withdrawal of finances in 1929 the SSA closed. The reason may be related to the call by the people for civil rights and the autocratic rule by the First Commissioner. The Progress Associations reformed themselves. Following are a number of documents in Australian Archives on the Social Service Association that give an indication of its rise and fall. (Australian Archives A6266/1 G27/4505) FEDERAL CAPITAL COMMISSION 14.2.1925 MEMORANDUM for Mr Waterman Welfare I meant to have a chat with you on the subject of Welfare before I left, but missed the opportunity. I am anxious to get something going without delay in connection with welfare conditions among the workmen employed by the Commission and their families and think probably the best initial step will to call a meeting of representatives of the unions and camps; men in the first instance to be followed by the women later on. I think a letter somewhat in the following terms may serve to initiate the matter. Will you draft the letter and send it out to such people as you think would be representative of the best interests, and I will then have a further chat with you on my return…[followed with a draft letter].

  • Future of Rugby Union in Australia
Future of rugby union in Australia Submission to the Senate Community Affairs References Committee Submitted by: Dr David Masters 20 September, 2017 I present this submission as a passionate supporter of both rugby and of the recognition of the State of Western Australia as a partner within the Commonwealth of Australia. I am a foundation member of the Western Force and prepared background material for the Western Force during the development of the “Own the Force” initiative. At this time, I was also a member of a small group advising Force CEO Mark Sinderberry on ownership options. 1 Submission summary The basis to this submission is that the by closing the Western Force rugby team the ARU have: • Not acted in the best interests of Australian rugby; • Used a flawed analysis in their assessment of the need to reduce teams; • Been dishonest in attributing the reasons for their financial losses and; • Been disingenuous in their dealing with Western Force supporters, the media and the Australian public. These will be covered, where appropriate within the specified terms of reference. Key conclusions are substantiated within the main document and are summarised as follows: 1. There is no evidence that increasing the number of Australian Super Rugby teams from 3 to 4 and then to 5 has been the cause of Australia’s recent poor performance in Super Rugby. There is evidence that this decline is associated with the ARU decision to allow and even encourage Australian rugby players to join foreign teams. Continued loss of players to Europe with mean rugby will follow Australian hockey.

  • AFL NSW/ACT STATEMENT 2021 AFL Sydney Community Football
AFL NSW/ACT STATEMENT Monday, 16 August 2021 AFL Sydney community football season cancelled It is with regret that AFL NSW/ACT has made the difficult decision today to cancel the 2021 AFL Sydney community football season due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 outbreak across Greater Sydney. This decision also extends to our NAB AFL Auskick programs in the region. The impacted competitions are: AFL Sydney Seniors AFL Sydney Harbour Juniors AFL Sydney Western Sydney Juniors All NAB AFL Auskick Centres We appreciate today’s announcement to cancel all AFL Sydney competitions for the season will disappoint our many players, coaches, umpires and volunteers who invest so much time, effort and energy in the season. AFL NSW/ACT shares in the immense disappointment to be unable to complete the 2021 competition in its entirety however today’s outcome is the unfortunate reality of the challenges the pandemic continues to throw at the community. AFL Sydney would like to take the opportunity to thank our stakeholders for the constructive feedback provided in enabling this difficult decision to be made. In reaching our decision, it became increasingly apparent that with the continued escalating health crisis there can be, understandably, no NSW Government sanctioned roadmap out of the lockdown for sport provided at the moment. It is equally clear that the timeframes of a possible return and ability to resume competitions are now not viable for winter sporting codes. Accordingly, no premierships, medals or awards will be given for 2021 cancelled competitions. We’d like to acknowledge the collegiate approach shown by our colleagues in the other major winter codes, particularly NSWRL, Football, Netball, Football, Rugby Union and Hockey, who have been forced to make similar heartbreaking decisions in relation to their own competitions.
