Results: Vanghetti’s method for cineplastic operations differs from similar previous methods, being the first aimed at exploiting natural movements of the remnant muscles to activate the mechanical prosthesis, and the first to do so by directly connecting the prosthesis to the residual muscles and tendons. This represented a frame-changing innovation for that time and paved the way for current neuroprosthetic approaches. The first description of the method was published in 1898 and human studies started in 1900. The results of these studies were presented in 1905 and published in 1906 in Plastic and Kinematic Prosthesis. A German surgeon, Ferdinand Sauer- bruch, often acknowledged as the inventor of the method, published his first results in 1915. Conclusions: Vanghetti was the first to accurately perform and describe cineplastic operations for patients following an upper arm amputation. He considered the neurologic implications of the problem and, perhaps in an effort to provide more appropriate proprioceptive feedback, he intu- itively applied the prostheses so that they were functionally activated by the muscles of the prox- imal stump.

The epidemic, however, had a formidable impact on medicine, public health, social attitudes and culture. An analysis of this case study can illustrate the impact of an epidemic of a severe disease on individual and collective life, and at the same time the efficacy of public health measures against it, and the importance of the social structure, state and private, in coping with the consequences of the epidemics. In this period, the attitude towards the handicapped changed from stigma and isolation to social integration, thanks especially to the changes in health legislation, social action and the initiatives of the patient’ associations.

  • Vittorio Putti 1880-1940
    VlTTORIO PUTTI* 1880-1940 Putti, after a thorough medical training, became the assistant to Alessandro Codivilla, director and chief sur- geon of the Jnstituto Ortopedico Rizzoli in Bologna. Codi- villa was one of the greatest orthopedic surgeons of all time. He was the first to employ an aseptic method for skeletal traction in fractures and osteoperiosteal grafts of bone to encourage osteogenesis. It was he who first de- vised efficient methods for tendon transplantation and for gentle reduction of congenital dislocations of the hip. Putti worked under this master, and at his death succeeded him as the director of the institute; he was also made professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Bologna. He was an outstanding successor. Erudite, re- sourceful, skilful, with extraordinary executive ability, he built up the clinic to such an extent that it has become probably the most noted bone and joint center in the world. Some years ago the Clinical Surgical Club, whose members included the most famous American surgeons, made a series of visits to all the important surgical clinics of Europe. One of the members of the club, after his re- turn to America, said that in his estimation Professor Putti's clinic surpassed all the other clinics they saw, in organization, technic and efficiency. Putti was also chief surgeon to the Hospital for Tuberculosis at Cortina in the Dolomites and probably was responsible for its es- tablishment. Putti had close friends in both England and America. He had great affection for Sir Robert Jones, and before World War II was in close touch with many other Eng- lish orthopedic surgeons, especially Professor Harry Platt, of Manchester.

    ALESSANDRO CODIVILLA (1861-1912): THE BOLOGNESE SCHOOL OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY The Bolognese School of orthopaedics dates back to the late 19th century and developed alongside the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (1). The Institute was founded in the ancient 16th century monastery of San Michele in Bosco bought by the great surgeon Francesco Rizzoli who left it in his will to the orthopaedic hospital. The first orthopaedic surgeon was Professor Alessandro Codivilla (2) who was director of the Rizzoli Institute from 1899. Codivalli transformed traumatology with his revolutionary discovery of “direct traction on the skeleton”, a method which involved inserting a metal pin into the heel bone to reduced long bone leg fractures (A). In the words of one of his pupils, “he made the Bolognese School famous because … he armed orthopaedics with a knife when it only knew how to use machines and instruments”. The instruments Codivilla invented include the craniotome (B), a device which replaced traditional drilling of the skull with resection (3). Vittorio Putti, Codivilla’s successor, modernized orthopaedics introducing novel amputation techniques, the knee joint prosthesis and inventing new surgical instruments (Putti screws, osteosynthesis pliers, etc.) Putti was not only a great orthopaedic surgeon but also a passionate bibliophile and collector of everything to do with the world of medicine. He bequeathed his scientific library and collections to the Rizzoli Institute so that all scholars might benefit from them. The last heir to the Bolognese school

(Putti, an inveterate scholar, amassed one of the world’s largest collections of historic books related to surgery and ortho- paedics, and that collection now contains more than 32,000 volumes [6].)
