Motorcycle Crash Causation Study: Volume 2—Coding Manual
Motorcycle Crash Causation Study: Volume 2—Coding Manual PUBLICATION NO. FHWA-HRT-18-039 FEBRUARY 2019 Research, Development, and Technology Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center 6300 Georgetown Pike McLean, VA 22101-2296 FOREWORD The Motorcycle Crash Causation Study, conducted through the Federal Highway Administration Office of Safety Research and Development, produced a wealth of information on the causal factors for motorcycle crashes, and its corresponding Volumes provide perspectives on what crash-countermeasure opportunities can be developed. This study used a crash- and control-case approach developed from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development protocols, which as discussed in this report, has provided insights into more than 1,900 data elements that may be associated with motorcycle-crash causation. The research team produced a final report along with a 14-volume series of supplemental reports that provide an overview of the study and a summary of its observations, the data-collection forms and coding definitions, a tabulation of each data element collected from each form, and selected comparisons with previous studies. It is anticipated that readers will select those Volumes and data elements that provide information of specific interest. This document, Volume 2—Coding Manual, provides the coding conventions used in this study. It provides data that enable the proper interpretation and understanding of the codes assigned to variables of interest during the study. This report will be of interest to individuals involved in traffic safety, safety training, crash and injury reduction, and roadway design and policy making, as well as to motorcycle- and safety-equipment designers, crash investigators and researchers, motorcycle and automotive manufacturers and consumers, roadway users, and human-factors specialists. -

personal electric vehicles GET MORE PERSONAL by Ted Dillard hen the term was coined, “personal electric vehicle” (PEV) meant almost exclusively electric cars. A Wdecade later, we’re seeing the resurrection of the electric car—almost every major automobile manufacturer has something in development. With the electric car movement behind them, a parade of PEVs—from something you can sling over your shoulder to a 100 mph-plus electric racing motorcycle—is coming down the pike. The price range for these vehicles is almost as extreme as the vehicles themselves. A few hundred dollars will buy SEGWAY X2 you an around-town scooter. A whole lot more will get you a custom-built, full-on race motorcycle. Even a year ago, many of these products were pipe dreams—pretty online prototypes, but not in actual production. Today, there are products that are available, affordable, and sitting on a showroom floor for you to see, Courtesy Segway touch, and ride. Stand-up Scooters We’ll start the tour with two extremes in the stand-up scooter market: Segway’s Personal Transporter and one of the ubiquitous Razor-type scooters. Both of these can be used for just about the same thing—getting around the city. At a retail price of about $8,000, the Segway is a premium product, commonly in use by police and security details. It weighs a little more than 100 pounds, and has a top speed of about 12.5 mph with a maximum range of 24 miles. A marvel of gyro-servo robotic technology, the Segway is controlled by the rider’s shifting weight. -

As the temperatures drop the 2019 riding season is wrapping up as well. I hope I can keep squeez- ing in some commuting days between snow storms. And even then, I‘ll get out to run a few errands or even a quick joy ride if the roads are clear. But the long days of joy rides are probably in the rear-view mirror for 2019. Usually I judge my season but the number of miles I put down, or the satisfaction that comes with a long trip to a far-off destination. -
