HISTORY 263: U.S. Women’s History This is a preliminary syllabus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summer 2012 HISTORY 263: U.S. Women’s History Instructor: Dr. Mara Dodge Tel. 413-572-5620 Use PLATO e-mail only Office: Bates 104 Course Description: This course explores all of American women’s history from the colonial period to the present and is open to students from any major. However, there is a daunting amount of material to cover in just 6 weeks so be prepared for a heavy reading load and a fast pace (and remember it is a 200 level course!) The course provides an excellent overview/ review of all of U.S. history with a special emphasis on women’s experiences and contributions. The course emphasizes the diversity of women’s experiences. We explore the unique experiences of specific European ethnic/ immigrant groups (ex. Irish, Italian, etc.) as well as the experiences of African-American, Native American, Asian-American, Latina, Jewish, Muslim, and lesbian women. The course makes extensive use of primary source materials. 1 Major themes include: changing ideas about women’s “proper place” in society; the history of the women’s rights movement; women’s role in social reform; changing ideas about sexuality, family, and reproduction; images of beauty and the “feminine ideal”; women and work; and movements for civil and legal rights. Note: Westfield State University assumes that a student will need to spend 16-20 hours a week to complete a 3 credit, on-line course in 6 weeks. These hours include all weekly course work and may include such activities as: textbook readings and assignments, watching videos, viewing Powerpoints, listening to podcasts, taking quizzes and exams, conducting research, writing essays/papers, posting to class discussion boards, and completing any other assigned weekly activities. -

CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY A long march for suffrage. Margaret Fuller was born in Cambridge in1810. By her late teens, she was considered a prodigy and equal or superior in intelligence to her male friends. As an adult she hosted “Conversations” for men and women on topics that ranged from women’s rights to philosophy. She joined Ralph Waldo Emerson in editing and writing for the Transcendentalist journal, The Dial from 1840-1842. It was in this publication that she wrote an article about women’s rights titled, “The Great Lawsuit,” which she would go on to expand into a book a few years later. In 1844, she moved to NYC to write for the New York Tribune. Her book, Woman in the Nineteenth Century was published in1845. She traveled to Europe as the Tribune’s foreign correspondent, the first woman to hold such a role. She died in a shipwreck off the coast of NY in July 1850 just as she was returning to life in the U.S. Her husband and infant also perished. It was hoped that she would be a leader in the equal rights and suffrage movements but her life was tragically cut short. 02 SARAH BURKS, CAMBRIDGE HISTORICAL COMMISSION December 2019 CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY A long march for suffrage. Harriet A. Jacobs (1813-1897) was born into slavery in Edenton, NC. She escaped her sexually abusive owner in 1835 and lived in hiding for seven years. In 1842 she escaped to the north. She eventually was able to secure freedom for her children and herself. -

Handout 2C The Second National Woman’s Rights Convention Worcester, MA October 15-16, 1851 One year after the first national convention, Worcester played host to the second national women’s rights convention. The second convention had been planned during the first and Mrs. Paulina W. Davis served as president pro tempore once more. Like the first convention, this meeting addressed more than just women’s suffrage, but other women’s rights issues as well, including education, job training, and the need for more women in the medical field. There were eight committees in total: the Finance Committee, the Business Committee, the Central Committee, the Educational Committee, the Industrial Committee, the Committee on Civil and Political Functions, the Committee on Social Relations, and the Committee on Publications. Many Massachusetts women served on these committees, including Sarah H. Earle, Abby Kelly Foster, Abby H. Price, Harriet K. Hunt, Anna Q.T. Parsons, Lucy Stone, Eliza H. Taft, Augustine C. Taft, Eliza A. Stowell, and Eliza Blarney. As president pro tempore, Davis gave an opening address yet again. She noted that at this point, the women’s rights movement had gained much attention, remarkable given that it had only been a year since the first national convention. She did recognize the opposition to the movement, though, yet proudly stated: There remains no doubt now that the discussions of our Conventions and their published proceedings have aroused, in some degree, that sort of inquiry into our doctrine of human rights which it demands. I have said Human Rights, not Woman’s Rights, for the relations, wants, duties, and rights of the sexes center upon the same great truth, and are logically, as they are practically, inseparable.1 Davis noted other examples of success, including the new schools that have been opened 1 “The proceedings of the Woman’s Rights Convention, held at Worcester, October 15th and 16th, 1851. -

Women and the Presidency By Cynthia Richie Terrell* I. Introduction As six women entered the field of Democratic presidential candidates in 2019, the political media rushed to declare 2020 a new “year of the woman.” In the Washington Post, one political commentator proclaimed that “2020 may be historic for women in more ways than one”1 given that four of these woman presidential candidates were already holding a U.S. Senate seat. A writer for Vox similarly hailed the “unprecedented range of solid women” seeking the nomination and urged Democrats to nominate one of them.2 Politico ran a piece definitively declaring that “2020 will be the year of the woman” and went on to suggest that the “Democratic primary landscape looks to be tilted to another woman presidential nominee.”3 The excited tone projected by the media carried an air of inevitability: after Hillary Clinton lost in 2016, despite receiving 2.8 million more popular votes than her opponent, ever more women were running for the presidency. There is a reason, however, why historical inevitably has not yet been realized. Although Americans have selected a president 58 times, a man has won every one of these contests. Before 2019, a major party’s presidential debates had never featured more than one woman. Progress toward gender balance in politics has moved at a glacial pace. In 1937, seventeen years after passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, Gallup conducted a poll in which Americans were asked whether they would support a woman for president “if she were qualified in every other respect?”4 * Cynthia Richie Terrell is the founder and executive director of RepresentWomen, an organization dedicated to advancing women’s representation and leadership in the United States. -

This paper considers the prospects for electing a woman president in 2008 and the challenges facing Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice–potential frontrunners from both major parties–given the historical experiences of women who pursued the nation’s highest office. -

IUSB Archives Inventory of Collections Annie Belle Boss Papers (League of Women Voters) 1914-1931 (3 Hollinger legal size boxes) (1 Flat Box with 1 Scrapbook (16” X 10 1/2” X 4”), with Deed of Gift). The papers pertain to the Woman’s Franchise League of Indiana and its successor, the Indiana League of Women Voters, and especially to the activities of Annie Belle Rittel Boss (Mrs. John C. Boss) (circa 1874-1946), a middle-class woman of Elkhart, Indiana who was active in these organizations on the local, district and state levels. Mrs. Boss’s papers became the property of her daughter, Helen K. Boss Winterhoff, and upon Mrs. Winterhoff’s death were obtained by members of the League of Women Voters of Elkhart. They presented the collection to IUSB in 1984. These papers include publications, correspondence, internal records and other memorabilia of the Woman’s Franchise League of Indiana (1915-1920) and the Indiana League of Women Voters (1920-1931) as well as a history of the latter organization compiled in 1977. Some of the materials concern the local Elkhart branch of the two organizations. Many of the items originated with Helen Beardsley of Elkhart, who founded the Elkhart chapter of the Woman’s Franchise League of Indiana in April, 1913. Serving on the board of the state organization, she became the first president of the Indiana League of Women Voters in 1920. During her years as president (1920 - 1922), the state headquarters was at Elkhart, after which time it was moved to Indianapolis. Mrs. Beardsley was the wife of Andrew Hubble Beardsley, a leading Elkhart businessman, who as a state legislator included woman suffrage in his platform and was influential in the passage of suffrage legislation in Indiana. -

The center and school were established by Ida Barbour, the first African-American woman to establish such a school in Portsmouth. It is still in operation today, and is now known as the Ida Barbour Early Learning Center. The celebration, which took place on November 11, 1945, included music, devotionals, a history of the center, collection of donations, prayers, and speeches. The work is also supplemented with advertisements for local businesses on the remaining three pages and the inside rear cover of the wrappers. In all, these advertisements cover over forty local businesses, the majority of which were likely African-American-owned es- tablishments. No copies in OCLC. $400. Early American Sex Manual 2.
