Although it’s the first time our awards have taken place at The Edison Ballroom, the venue has a long and colorful history. For much of the Edison’s life, it’s been a music club, first in the 1930s, featuring Swing Era bands, and then in the 1990s as The Supper Club, an elegant venue featuring everyone from Bob Dylan to Tony Bennett. In the interim, it became the Edison Theatre, where it was home to many Broadway shows, including the infamous “Oh! Calcutta!” While I hope that the talent at tonight’s show will remain more clothed than the “Oh! Calcutta!” cast did, throughout my six years on the Awards Committee, the one thing I’ve learned is that during the WGAE Awards, you never know what’s going to happen… I’m thrilled that you’re here to celebrate some of the best work that our members have produced in the past year. But don’t let this be your only way of engaging with the Writers Guild. I encourage you to become involved with the WGAE’s committees and caucuses as well as its career training sessions, activities and organizing campaigns. Plus, if you’re in need of a quiet place to work, members can even come to the office and use the writing room. My heartfelt thanks go out to the show’s wonderful host Colin Quinn, Executive Producer John Marshall, to all of the impressive presenters and nominees, the rest of our writing team, the incredibly dedicated Awards Committee, the tireless WGAE staff, our volunteers, my fellow Council members, my very patient husband Chris and everyone else involved in making tonight’s show possible. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience.

Many couples often strolled in a park and hesitated underneath the comfort of its glow. Just as the lamp sym­ bolizes a bygone era, the staff and I have labored to produce a yearbook which re­ flects the unprecedented events of the 1963- 1964 school year. Through the tragic and exhilarating, you, the students of Nederland High School, have alternately been saddened and thrilled. For many of you eniors, this is the culmination of your formal education; may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For those who continue into college, you have a strong foundation upon which to base your future. To the under­ classmen, a word from one who has already passed this way: Do not allow yourself to become entangled by the petty, for these are surely the most productive and valuable years of your lives.
