Email: [email protected]/[email protected]; http://www.suanet.ac.tz Abstract The slogan “Serengeti shall not die” (German: Serengeti darf nicht sterben) is widely credited for alerting the global community to the urgency of conserving the Serengeti and its biological values for the benefit of local and global communities. The slogan has become popular since 1960 when Bernhard and Michael Grzimek authored a book, Serengeti Shall Not Die. However, despite this commitment the management challenges in Serengeti are growing, causing skepticism about the potential for realizing such a goal. These challenges include illegal hunting, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflicts aggravated by human population growth and poverty. In addressing these challenges and therefore transforming the ambition “Serengeti shall not die” into reality, the multiple strategies required are presented in this paper. The paper starts by reviewing the challenges contradicting the ambition. The noteworthy facts, that this 'glacier lies at a much lower level than the corresponding portions of other glaciers around it, that it is composed of fully formed ice, while they are deeply covered with snow and neve, and that it is enclosed on all sides by high mountain walls, in which the direct observation of those who have been entirely around it has disclosed no opening, as well as the indications afforded by the condition and size of the glacier itself, supply more conclusive evidence that it is enclosed only by and ends only in its own basin, than the disbelief of Sir Martin Conway, who has never seen the glacier nor any of its barriers, except the south Hispar wall, which, according to his own testimony, has no opening at this part. -

Morales1, B. Senut2, M. Pickford2, 3 ABSTRACT Palaeontological field work in the Namib Sand Sea, east of Meob, Namibia, has led to the discovery of the lower dentition of an Early Pliocene hyaenid. The same aeolianite series contains abundant carni- vore footprints and coprolites compatible in size with the dental remains. The closest match for the teeth is with the extinct species Crocuta dietrichi, the type locality of which is the Upper Laetoli Beds, Tanza- nia, ca 3.5-3.8 Ma. Elsewhere the species is reported to range in age from ca 4.4 to 1.9 Ma. The primi- tive aspect of the teeth and their diminutive dimensions suggest that the fossils are closer in age to 4 Ma than to 2 Ma. This discovery provides the first evidence concerning the age of the Tsondab aeolianites in the Meob sector of the Namib Desert. [Au1] Freshwater Crabs and Shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda) of the Nile Basin Neil Cumberlidge Abstract Freshwater crabs are present in almost all freshwater bodies in the Nile River basin ranging from the main river to mountain streams, and from extensive wetlands to rift valley lakes, but these decapod crustaceans are absent from the more arid regions of the Sahara and East Africa. Some 14 species of freshwater crabs (Potamonautidae) and six species of shrimps (Atyidae, Palaeomonidae) are found in the eight African countries that have at least part of their territory in the Nile drainage. The most species rich country in the Nile basin is Uganda (with more than 12 species), while the vast desert countries of The Sudan and Egypt are rela- tively species poor and have no endemic species of freshwater crabs, and Ethiopia (although not species rich) has both widespread and endemic species. -

Article The Evolution and Reform of Tanzanian Wildlife Management Fred Nelson, Rugemeleza Nshala and W.A. Rodgers Abstract: Natural resource management efforts in sub-Saharan Africa and throughout the tropics widely advocate the increased involvement of local communities in management decisions and processes. In Tanzania, wildlife management is largely centralised, featuring large state-protected areas and strict controls on resource use throughout the colonial and post-independence periods. During the past two decades a policy reform narrative has emerged in Tanzania, strongly supported by donor agencies and foreign conservation organisations, which aims to increase the participation of rural communities and decentralise wildlife management to the local level. Despite official gov- ernment policies calling for these reforms, administrative and legal measures enacted during the past 10 years have, contrastingly, increased central con- trol over wildlife and reduced the rights of rural communities. This diver- gence between the rhetoric of policy statements and management practice is best explained by the historical legacy of centralised control over wildlife and the institutional disincentives to devolving authority that have become entrenched within Tanzania’s wildlife bureaucracy. Received: 15 July 2009 / Accepted: 11 September 2009 / Published: 25 September 2009 Abstract: This is an historic overview of conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa from pre-colonial times through the present. It demonstrates that Africans practiced conservation that was ignored by the colonial powers. The colonial market economy combined with the human and livestock population explosion of the 21st century are the major factors contributing to the demise of wildlife and critical habitat. Unique insight is provided into the economics of a representative safari company, something that has not been readily available to Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) practitioners. Modern attempts at sharing benefits from conservation with rural communities will fail due to the low rural resource to population ratio regardless of the model, combined with the uneven distribution of profits from safari hunting that drives most CBNRM programs, unless these ratios are changed. Low household incomes from CBNRM are unlikely to change attitudes of rural dwellers towards Western approaches to conservation. -

For example, while the bats of Zimbabwe have received some attention (Fenton 1975; Smithers and Wilson 1979; Hutton 1986), at most locations there has been no specific survey of bats. Even at Mana Pools National Park on the Zambezi River (15°44'S; 29°21'E), the site of some bat research (e.g. Aldridge et al. 1990; Fenton et al. 1990; Obrist et al. 1989), there is virtually no information about the bat fauna. Between 18:00 and 21:00 we used 12 m mist nets (126 net hours in November 1987) and two macro-mist nets (36 net hours in June 1990; Rautenbach 1985) to sample bats at sites within 10 km of the headquarters of Mana Pools National Park.
