The offer was available for three months, after which the band released and commercialized the album, both digitally and in CD. In this paper, we use weekly music sales data in the US between 2004-2012 to examine the effect of Radiohead’s unorthodox strategy on the band’s al- bum sales. We find that Radiohead’s PYOP offer had no effect on the subsequent CD sales. Interestingly, it yielded higher digital album sales compared to a traditional release. -

Culture shouldn’t be an industry; it should be something natural and organic. Culture is our commu- nal history and legacy; the context in which we learn and grow, and to which we may contribute. In the past, our culture might have consisted of the stories we learned as children, the songs we all sang together, perhaps traditional clothing or dances. In some sense, it’s hard to imagine today. Our culture, to whatever extent we have a culture, might still consist of stories (Disney), songs (the Jeopardy! theme), clothing (Prada), and dances (The Electric Slide). -
Radiohead and the Philosophy of Music
1 Radiohead and the Philosophy of Music Edward Slowik There’s an old joke about a stranger who, upon failing to get any useful directions from a local resident, complains that the local “doesn’t know much.” The local replies, “yeah, but I ain’t lost”. Philosophers of music are kind of like that stranger. Music is an important part of most people’s lives, but they often don’t know much about it—even less about the philosophy that underlies music. Most people do know what music they like, however. They have no trouble picking and choosing their favorite bands or DJs (they aren’t lost). But they couldn’t begin to explain the musical forms and theory involved in that music, or, more importantly, why it is that music is so important to them (they can’t give directions). Exploring the evolution of Radiohead’s musical style and its unique character is a good place to start. Radiohead and Rock Music In trying to understand the nature of music, it might seem that focusing on rock music, as a category of popular music, is not a good choice. Specifically, rock music complicates matters because it brings into play lyrics, that is, a non-musical written text. This aspect of rock may draw people’s attention away from the music itself. (In fact, I bet you know many people who like a particular band or song based mainly on the lyrics—maybe these people should take up poetry instead!) That’s why most introductions to the philosophy of music deal exclusively with classical music, since classical music is often both more complex structurally and contains no lyrics, allowing the student to focus upon the purely musical structural components. -
Searching for Malware in Bittorrent∗
Searching for Malware in BitTorrent∗ Andrew D. Berns and Eunjin (EJ) Jung April 24, 2008 Abstract One of the most widely publicized aspects of computer security has been the presence and propagation of malware. Malware has adapted to many different changing technologies, in- cluding recently-popular P2P systems. While previous work has examined P2P networks and protocols like KaZaA and Gnutella for malware, little has been done so far that examines BitTor- rent. This project explored BitTorrent for the presence of malware, and discovered a significant portion of malware in the downloaded file set. Statistics on torrents infected with malware were gathered and analyzed to find patterns that are helpful in creating basic filtering heuristics. While these heuristics may work in simple cases, several easy ways they can be defeated were found. 1 Introduction Recently, peer-to-peer networks have emerged as a popular paradigm for Internet applications. In fact, a study in 2005 estimated that P2P traffic accounted for around 70% of all traffic on the Internet [2]. P2P technology is finding new applications as it grows, including voice-over-IP systems and streaming video delivery. While P2P has found several different uses, perhaps the most widely-known use is for file sharing. One concern with P2P file sharing is that it can be used to distribute malware (malicious software, such as worms, viruses, and rootkits). On the one hand, users have access to huge amounts of data, while on the other hand, this data can easily be tainted with viruses, worms, and other forms of malware. An important consideration, then, is if the concern about malware in P2P networks is warranted, and if it is, are there ways to protect a computer and minimize the risk of malware infection from P2P networks. -
360° Deals: an Industry Reaction to the Devaluation of Recorded Music
360° DEALS: AN INDUSTRY REACTION TO THE DEVALUATION OF RECORDED MUSIC SARA KARUBIAN* I. INTRODUCTION In October of 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows without a record label. The band’s contract with record company EMI had been fulfilled in 2003, and Radiohead did not bother finding a new deal as they began recording their seventh album.1 Radiohead then made the album available at www.inrainbows.com, where fans were instructed to “pay-what-you- want” for the digital download.2 Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s front man, Thom Yorke, said “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”3 It was no surprise that Radiohead received critical acclaim for the artistic merits of the album,4 or that millions of fans found a way to acquire the music. Its financial success, however, was less predictable. Radiohead declined to release statistics related to its pay-what-you-want model, but a conservative estimate suggests that the band’s profits from this digital release exceeded six and a half million.5 Furthermore, when Radiohead contracted with iTunes and a distributor to sell the album on iTunes and in stores, its high sales pushed it to the top of traditional album charts6 in early * J.D. Detecting Pedophile Activity in Bittorrent Networks
Detecting Pedophile Activity in BitTorrent Networks Moshe Rutgaizer, Yuval Shavitt, Omer Vertman, and Noa Zilberman School of Electrical Engineering, Tel-Aviv University, Israel Abstract. The wide spread of Peer-to-Peer networks makes multime- dia files available to users all around the world. However, Peer-to-Peer networks are often used to spread illegal material, while keeping the source of the data and the acquiring users anonymous. In this paper we analyze activity measurements in the BitTorrent network and examine child sex abuse activity through the Mininova web portal. We detect and characterize pedophilic material in the network, and also analyze differ- ent aspects of the abusers activity. We hope our results will help law enforcement teams detecting child molesters and tracking them down earlier. 1 Introduction Peer-to-peer networks are being widely used around the world by millions of users for sharing content. The anonymity provided by these networks makes them prone to sharing illegal contents, from simple copyright protected material to highly dangerous material, as will be discussed next. The BitTorrent file sharing network was responsible for 27% to 55% of in- ternet traffic (depending on geographic location) in 2009 [13]. The BitTorrent protocol allows to download large files without loading a single source computer, rather the downloading users join a group of hosts that download and upload from each other, simultaneously. Every BitTorrent file is uniquely defined by a descriptor file called a torrent, which is distributed via email or http websites. This torrent file allows the downloading and uploading users, called leechers and seeders, to share the content file. -
Rock Harmony Reconsidered: Tonal, Modal and Contrapuntal Voice&
DOI: 10.1111/musa.12085 BRAD OSBORN ROCK HARMONY RECONSIDERED:TONAL,MODAL AND CONTRAPUNTAL VOICE-LEADING SYSTEMS IN RADIOHEAD A great deal of the harmony and voice leading in the British rock group Radiohead’s recorded output between 1997 and 2011 can be heard as elaborating either traditional tonal structures or establishing pitch centricity through purely contrapuntal means.1 A theory that highlights these tonal and contrapuntal elements departs from a number of developed approaches in rock scholarship: first, theories that focus on fretboard-ergonomic melodic gestures such as axe- fall and box patterns;2 second, a proclivity towards analysing chord roots rather than melody and voice leading;3 and third, a methodology that at least tacitly conflates the ideas of hypermetric emphasis and pitch centre. Despite being initially yoked to the musical conventions of punk and grunge (and their attendant guitar-centric compositional practice), Radiohead’s 1997– 2011 corpus features few of the characteristic fretboard gestures associated with rock harmony (partly because so much of this music is composed at the keyboard) and thus demands reconsideration on its own terms. This mature period represents the fullest expression of Radiohead’s unique harmonic, formal, timbral and rhythmic idiolect,4 as well as its evolved instrumentation, centring on keyboard and electronics. The point here is not to isolate Radiohead’s harmonic practice as something fundamentally different from all rock which came before it. Rather, by depending less on rock-paradigmatic gestures such as pentatonic box patterns on the fretboard, their music invites us to consider how such practices align with existing theories of rock harmony while diverging from others. -
A Torrent of Copyright Infringement? Liability for Bittorrent File-Sharers and File-Sharing Facilitators Under Current and Proposed Canadian Copyright Law
A Torrent of Copyright Infringement? Liability for BitTorrent File-Sharers and File-Sharing Facilitators Under Current and Proposed Canadian Copyright Law Allen Mendelsohn Faculty of Law McGill University Montreal August 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) © Allen Mendelsohn 2010 ABSTRACT [Le résumé français suit l'anglais.] BitTorrent has become the primary means to share large files (movies, television shows, and music) over the internet. Canadian copyright law and jurisprudence have not kept pace with technology, and as a result there is no definitive pronouncement on the liability for copyright infringement of BitTorrent file- sharers, i.e. users, and file-sharing facilitators, i.e. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and torrent search engines. Extrapolating from existing law and Canadian and foreign jurisprudence, I conclude that: (i) BitTorrent file-sharers are liable although there may be situations where fair dealing could apply; (ii) it may be possible to show ISPs are liable based on certain findings of fact; and (iii) torrent search engines should not be liable for infringement. There have been three successive attempts to reform copyright law that have addressed internet issues generally and file-sharing in particular. Under the most recent attempt, Bill C-32, file-sharers would be liable under the new ―making available‖ right, and file- sharing facilitators could be liable under the new ―enabling‖ concept of secondary infringement introduced with the bill. RÉSUMÉ BitTorrent est devenu le principal moyen de partager des fichiers volumineux (films, émissions de télévision et musique) sur Internet.
