American Historians and German Medieval Scholarship: A Comment Otto Gerhard Oexle Preface For the first time since the founding of the German Historical Institute in 1987, the topic of the 1995 Annual Lecture addressed the German Middle Ages—as perceived through American eyes. We invited two distinguished scholars from the United States and Germany, and their presentations made this evening a truly special event. In his lecture, Professor Patrick J. Geary traced the influence of German medievalists, especially their methods and historiography, on American academia. During the second half of the nineteenth century, German scholarship came to be regarded as an exemplary model, owing to its scholarly excellence. However, within a few decades, German medieval scholarship's function as a model for American academics declined. Professor Geary gave an engaging account of this development and offered at the same time an absorbing analysis of how the perception and interpreta- tion of German medieval history by American historians were shaped by their attempt to explain American history. -

INCANDELA In a recent work, William Courtenay refers to the issues in Holcot's writings under discussion in this essay as "theological sophismata."1 That they are. But it is the burden of this essay to suggest that they are more: Holcot's interest in these questions had a funda- mentally practical import, and such seemingly esoteric philosophical and theological speculation was in the service of a pastoral program geared to preaching the faith to unbelievers. For someone in a religious order charged with this mission, questions that may initially appear only as sophismata may actually perform quite different functions when examined in context. Robert Holcot was best known in his own time as a comment tator on the Book of Wisdom. Wey writes that this work "made its author famous overnight and his fame held throughout the next two centuries."2 Wey also proposes that it was because of the rep- utation won with the Wisdom-commentary that Holcot's Sentences- commentary and some quodlibet questions were printed four times 1. Philosophical Fiction? On J. M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello Robert Pippin University of Chicago i he modern fate of the ideal of the beautiful is deeply intertwined with the beginnings of European aesthetic modernism. More specifically, from the point of view of modernism, commitment to the ideal of the beautiful is often understood to be both Tirrelevant and regressive. This claim obviously requires a gloss on “modernity” and “modern- ism.” Here is a conventional view. European modernism in the arts can be considered a reaction to the form of life coming into view in the mid-nineteenth century as the realization of early Enlightenment ideals: that is, the supreme cognitive authority of modern natural science, a new market economy based on the accumulation of private capital, rapid urbanization and industri- alization, ostensibly democratic institutions still largely controlled by elites, the privatization of religion and so the secularization of the public sphere. The modernist moment arose from some sense that this form of life was so unprecedented in human history that art’s very purpose or rationale, its mode of address to an audience, had to be fundamentally rethought. Nothing about the purpose or value of art, as it had been understood, could be taken for granted any longer, and the issue was: what kind of art, committed to what ideal, could be credible in such a world (if any)? A response to such a development was taken by some to require a novelty, experimentation and formal radicality so extreme as to seem unintelligible to its “first responders.” Modernism was to be an anti-Romanticism, rejecting lyrical expression of the inner in favor of impersonal- ity, or of multiple, fractured authorial personae, attempting an ironic distancing, experimental 2 republics of letters innovation, and, in so-called high modernism, assuming an elite position, sometimes with mul- tiple, obscure allusions, defiantly resistant to commercialization or a public role. -

College of Liberal Arts | Fall 2021-22 Minor - Medieval Studies ● Minor - Medieval Studies Minor - Medieval Studies Description The minor in medieval studies is an interdisciplinary course of study that covers the period from 476 to 1517. Students will be encouraged to take courses from a wide range of disciplines, which makes this minor well-suited to many majors. They will come to understand that "the Middle Ages" in fact includes a wide variety of cultures, artistic trends, literatures, languages, philosophies, and religious practices. In developing a deeper appreciation for the past, students will come to a better understanding of the foundation of our fast-paced, ever- changing present-day world. Course Requirements The minor in medieval studies consists of 18 semester hours, including Hst 309 or Eng 316 or Mlll 375. Students must complete 15 hours at the 300 level or above from the approved list of courses below. The 18 semester hours must be taken in at least three different areas (e.g., English, Spanish, German), with 15 hours in an area different from the student's major. The same course may not satisfy requirements for both the major and the minor. Sid-Ahmad Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This study of Abubakr bin Ṭufayl’s Ḥayy bin Yaqzān and its reception in early modern England aims to determine the extent and nature of John Milton’s, John Locke’s and Daniel Defoe’s engagement of Ḥayy. I begin with historical research that offers the interpretative contexts upon which my comparative analyses rely. The dissertation begins with a study of seventeenth-century England where Ḥayy was received and twelfth-century Morocco where it was written, correcting misunderstandings in recent studies of the meaning and role of Ḥayy. In Chapter Two, I argue that Milton’s representation of Adam’s awakening in Book VIII of Milton’s Paradise Lost may have been influenced by Ḥayy. I further suggest considering whether Milton had access to other medieval Islamic sources, particularly Islamic stories of ascent. The shared elements suggest considering these stories part of a common cycle. As for John Locke, my analysis corrects earlier suggestions that his Essay Concerning Humane Understanding and Ḥayy are in agreement. I show that Locke in fact disagreed with the claims made in Ḥayy. -
The Early Middle Ages
The Early Middle Ages After the collapse of Rome, Western Europe entered a period of political, social, and economic decline. From about 500 to 1000, invaders swept across the region, trade declined, towns emptied, and classical learning halted. For those reasons, this period in Europe is sometimes called the “Dark Ages.” However, Greco-Roman, Germanic, and Christian traditions eventually blended, creating the medieval civilization. This period between ancient times and modern times – from about 500 to 1500 – is called the Middle Ages. The Frankish Kingdom The Germanic tribes that conquered parts of the Roman Empire included the Goths, Vandals, Saxons, and Franks. In 486, Clovis, king of the Franks, conquered the former Roman province of Gaul, which later became France. He ruled his land according to Frankish custom, but also preserved much of the Roman legacy by converting to Christianity. In the 600s, Islamic armies swept across North Africa and into Spain, threatening the Frankish kingdom and Christianity. At the battle of Tours in 732, Charles Martel led the Frankish army in a victory over Muslim forces, stopping them from invading France and pushing farther into Europe. This victory marked Spain as the furthest extent of Muslim civilization and strengthened the Frankish kingdom. Charlemagne After Charlemagne died in 814, his heirs battled for control of the In 786, the grandson of Charles Martel became king of the Franks. He briefly united Western empire, finally dividing it into Europe when he built an empire reaching across what is now France, Germany, and part of three regions with the Treaty of Italy. -

PAULUS NICOLETTUS VENETUS, Sophismata aurea [Golden Sophisms] In Latin, decorated manuscript on paper Northern Italy, Reggio d’Emilia (Ferrara?) or Padua?, dated 1417 65 ff., complete (collation: i-iii12, iv-v10, vi9 [10-1, with last leaf of quire likely a cancelled blank]), on paper (a number of watermarks, respectively close to (1) Briquet, no. 2637-2638: “Basilic” (e.g. f. 7), Reggio-d’Emilia, 1404, Ferrara, 1406, Udine, 1402-1408; see also Briquet no. 2663: Ferrara, 1417; (2) Briquet, no. 809: “Arc” (e.g. f. 27), Siena, 1410: Lucca, 1423 [but also Cologne, 1419]; (3) Briquet, no. 11687:“Monts” (e. g. f. 57), Padova, 1408-1415 or Briquet, no. 11689, Florence, 1411-1421 or Pisa, 1416), written in a tight and highly abridged gothic bookhand by a single hand (except table of contents on f. 65v, by a different although contemporary hand), text in two columns, quire signatures, a few catchwords (e.g. fol. 24v), paper ruled in brown ink (justification 186 x 140 mm.), paragraph marks in red, some capitals struck in red, painted initials in red or blue throughout, some larger parti-colored initials in red and blue, a variety of contemporary or slightly later marginal annotations and corrections (worthy of in-depth study). Bound in uncovered pasteboard, spine reinforced with snippets of inscribed parchment, spine sewn on three raised thongs left apparent, covers and spine meant to subsequently receive a leather covering (unfinished), pastedowns lined with reused paper copied in a cursive bâtarde script in brown ink, containing excerpts from Italian notarial documents pertaining to the town of Novalino (?) (another form for Nodano, near Brescia?) and the monastery of San Pietro de Novalino and dated 1504 (Some foxing, a few waterstains, mostly marginal, first paper leaf darkened, perhaps due to past exposure, still completely legible).
