The questions of feminism, the feminine and the female appear in numerous literary, sociological, anthropological and political studies and represent a border issue in several fields of study. The essays collected here are about the role of women in literature, female identity, the female body in the process of writing and “female genres”. However, the two basic questions are centred around the variability of the construction of female identity in the process of writing or how the historical and cultural construction of female identity is mirrored in female writing and how a literary canon is constructed, where and in which literary genres female writers and their works are placed in a literary canon, which is so male-centred, and so is the Hungarian literature of the 20th century. The first essay introduces the topic of investigation from a theoretical perspective. ‘What is a Woman? – Female Identity in the Mirror of Feminist Criticism’ examines a key issues of feminist theory, such as the faces of identity, its relationship to language and the several factors that play a role in the formation of identity. Female ghosts project images of erotic attraction and seduction. Three short stories – Auguste Villiers de l’isle-Adam Vera, Dezső Kosztolányi Hrussz Krisztina csodálatos látogatása [The Wonderful Visit of Krisztina Hrussz], and Géza Szilágyi Éjjel a fogadóban [Night at the Inn] – examine the literary representation of the female ghost together with the reasons of post mortem encounter communication between the living and the returned female ghosts. The following two essays deal with forgotten Hungarian female writers who lived in the same period in minorities. One of them in 7 Nyitrai_angol_7-94_:press 2013.12.18. 16:59 Page 8 Preface Czechoslovakia (Piroska Szenes) and the other one in Transylvania (Maria Berde). The study about Piroska Szenes analyses two novels: Az utolsó úr [The Last Lord] (1927) and Egyszer élünk [We Only Live Once] (1935). The essay which analyses Maria Berde also investigates two novels: Tüzes kemence [Hot Furnace] and Szent szégyen [The Sacred Disgrace]. Both authors stress the role of narration in the construction of identity. The following essay: ‘Identity Construction Through Therapeutic Writing: The Interpretation of Asszony a fronton [Woman on the Front], an Autobiographical Novel by Alaine Polcz’ also tries to focus on the same topic, the role of narration in the construction of identity, but this time from the point of view of the autobiography. A contemporary Hungarian female crime fiction writer, Katalin Baráth is the topic of the next essay, which analyses the relationship between crime fiction and feminism focusing on the characteristic features of the role of female detectives. The main aim of the next essay is to point out how the narrative identity of the two novels’ narrators is formed, that is, the elements of the protagonists’ female identity in the novels of Zsuzsa Rakovszky. The last essay maps contemporary Hungarian women’s literature after 1989 and points out the social, political, cultural, medial and literary processes as well as trends in literary theory that led to the formation of a new female canon. The eight essays of this volume focus particularly on Hungarian literature and give us a summarized view of the ways of creating female objects, which are constructed through the various processes of narration. They examine several genres and the possible points of view of literary canons and construction processes. Female Identity in the Mirror of Feminist Criticism Abstract • • • • • The paper is devoted to the exploration of female identity in the mirror of feminist criticism; its objective is to establish a definition and identify the core components of female identity. Various approaches to defining female identity are introduced and examined, and at the same time grouped according to their primary focus or emphasis. It ties together feminist theories that pay special attention to historical development of female identity, theories that emphasise the social construction of identity, that focus on the female body. The investigation underlines the differences between collective and individual identity, presents, compares and contrasts the different understandings of the sex/gender system and the place of female identity in this system with special attention to the poststructuralist theory in feminism on sex and gender. One of the most frequently discussed issues within feminism is the connection between identity and language. This facet of feminist theory is discussed in a subchapter which focuses on the notion of language acquisition, the relation of language to society, and the links between feminism, deconstruction and psychoanalysis. The investigation has proved that it is more adequate to identify which factors have an important role in the formation of female identity than which factors actually comprise that identity. Race, age, class, sexual orientation, nationality, idiosyncratic personal experience (a wholly unique store of experiences), religion, political views and intellectual abilities are among the central categories that always shape the experience of being one sex or another, always contributing to the creation of personal identity. This dissertation addresses an ignored [partly for its controversial nature] aspect of Nietzschean philosophy: that of the role of modern woman in the creation of a future horizon. Details of the effects of the Enlightenment, Christianity and democracy upon society are discussed, as well as effects on the individual, particularly woman. After this forward look at the changes anticipated by Nietzsche, the traditional roles of woman as the eternal feminine, wife and mother are debated. An argument for the necessity of a continuation of the battle of the sexes, and the struggle among men and women in a context of sexual love and friendship is given. This mutual affirmation must occur through the motivation of pride and not vanity. In conclusion, I argue that one possible avenue for change is a Nietzschean call for a modern revaluation of values by noble woman in conjugation with her warrior scholar to bring about the elevation of mankind.

Biopolitics and Biopoetics: Some Preliminary Remarks Over the past few decades, competing concepts and tropes of life have displayed a striking vivacity in the discourses of the human and social sciences. This still fairly recent development (no doubt partially fueled by unprecedented developments in biotechnologies) reflects the historical fact that the very meaning, the limits, and the unity of life, as well as the distinctions between life and non-life have become problematic to a great extent. In response to these often anxiety-inducing transformations that unfolded in the wake of the historical and political catastrophes of the 20th century, since the 1990s the terms “biopower” and “biopolitics” have emerged as two of the central categories used by the theoretical humanities to interpret the specificity of our historical present (for a concise overview of the most influential theories of biopower, see Lemke 2011). Today, the wide-ranging consensus that reigns across a number of sub-disciplines holds that, in the end, what is unique about our age will come to light only if we understand our changing relations to “life” itself. The heuristic value of the two terms “biopower” and “biopolitics” lies in the fact that they provide total explanations of virtually all aspects of human existence. If the inherent teleology of the history of power puts it on a path toward an ever more efficient management of life (be that human or non-human), in the end practically all manifestations of human praxis will have to be understood in biopolitical terms.

    of these posters carry the titles of Georges Perec’s novels, but Ignasi Aballí very few were actually made into Flms. We might, however, Desapariciones II (1 of 24), 2005 seem to remember some of these as Flms, or perhaps simply imagine we remember them. A cinema poster, aker it has accomplished its function of announcing a Flm, is all that’s lek of the Flm: an objective, material trace of its existence. Yet it also holds a subjective trace. It carries something of our own personal history, of our involvement with the cinema, making us remember certain aspects of Flms, maybe even their storylines. As we look at these posters we begin to create our own storylines, the images, text and design suggesting di©erent possibilities to us. By fabricating a tangible trace of Flms that were never made, Desaparicions II brings the Flms into existence and it is the viewer who begins to create, even remember these movies. The images that appear in the posters have all been taken from artworks made by Aballí. As the artist has commented: ‘In the case of Perec, I carried out a process of investigation to construct a Fction that enabled me to relate my work to his and generate a hybrid, which is something directly constructed by me, though it includes real elements I found during the documentation stage.’ 3 Absence, is not only evident in the novel La Disparition, but is also persistent in the work Aballí; mirrors obliterated with Tipp-Ex, photographs of the trace paintings have lek once they have been taken down.

    24.01: Classics of Western Philosophy Beauvoir on Gender, Oppression, and Freedom 1. Introduction: Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) Beauvoir was born in Paris and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. She passed exams for Certificates in History of Philosophy, General Philosophy, Greek, and Logic in 1927, and in 1928, in Ethics, Sociology, and Psychology. She wrote a graduate diplôme (equivalent to an MA thesis) on Leibniz. Her peers included Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1929, she took second place in the highly competitive philosophy agrégation exam, barely losing to Jean-Paul Sartre who took first (it was his second attempt at the exam). At 21 years of age, Beauvoir was the youngest student ever to pass the exam. She taught in high school from 1929-1943, and then supported herself on her writings, and co-editorship of Le Temps Modernes. She is known for her literary writing, and her philosophical work in existentialism, ethics, and feminism. She published The Second Sex in 1949. 2. Gender ‘One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman. No biological, psychological or economic fate determines the future that the human female presents in society.’ (II.iv.1) A. What is a woman? “Tota mulier in utero: she is a womb,” some say. Yet speaking of certain women, the experts proclaim, “They are not women,” even though they have a uterus like the others. Everyone agrees there are females in the human species; today, as in the past, they make up about half of humanity; and yet we are told that “femininity is in jeopardy”; we are urged, “Be women, stay women, become women.” So not every female human being is necessarily a woman… (23) So there seems to be a sort of contradiction in our ordinary understanding of women: not every female is a woman, otherwise they would not be exhorted to be women.

The spread of the coronavirus and the worldwide economic crisis will make our work more difficult still. But we don’t give up. We will continue to fight in defence of the freedom of thought and gender equality. The Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation, as you know, has been created to support the work of female artists. Its many initiatives included, for example, a series of exhibitions of Women Commentators – a project which gave voice to young Russian and Ukrainian artists who live in countries where freedom of expression is not always allowed. One of the most recent investigations that the Foundation carried out, Little Chance to Advance, has revealed the huge underrepresentation of female teachers in Polish Art Academies. The Foundation is also currently working on numerous projects, which include an exhibition of Urszula Broll, a recently deceased artist who unfortunately did not live to see sufficient recognition for the important work of her life, as well as an archive of statements and works by female artists from the Visegrad Group. The recent cuts in the financing of NGO’s providing social and cultural support for women, make the raison d’ être of the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation even more justified. It is why I ask you to join the group of the Foundation’s Friends and support us with a financial contribution so as to help the Foundation implement its program in support for women artists, consisting of research projects, exhibitions, book publications, seminars… I do not ask you for this commitment in exchange for nothing.

He is the author of 1 book of original prose, 9 books of original poetry, 6 in Hungarian, 2 in English, 1 in Arabic, 1 in Bulgarian, 1 in Czech, and 13 books of translations including A Transparent Lion, selected poetry of Attila József and Swimming in the Ground a Contemporary Hungarian Poetry (in English, both with co-translator Michael Castro) and an anthology of North American Indigenous poets in Hungarian titled Medvefelhő a város felett. He writes his poems in English (which is his second language) and Hungarian. He had lived in Holland for two years before moving to the US where he'd lived between 1988-2002, at present he resides in Szeged, Hungary. His poetic works and translations have been published in over 200 magazines and anthologies in English, Hungarian and other languages worldwide. He is a recipient of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC) residency in Canada in 2011. His latest book in English titled a hermit has no plural was published by Singing Bone Press in the fall of 2015. His latest book in Hungarian was published by Lector Press in May 2018. In 2018 he published his first jazz poetry CD in English titled Vibration of Words with three amazing Hungarian jazz musicians. He received the Poesis 25 Prize for Poetry in Satu Mare Romania in 2015, the Salvatore Quasimodo special prize for poetry in 2012, a National Cultural Foundation grant in 2007 and a Füst Milan translator prize in 1999 and in 2017.
