Extravagant Passion The lack of focus that stems from not believing you can achieve great things is a pitfall that stands squarely in the path of even the most talented people in the pursuit of remarkable performance. An individual’s passion must be extravagant in order to dedicate themself to the preparation, self examination, and sacrifice that remarkable performance is born of. I spent over a year of my life at Bronco training camp in a twelve year NFL career. Those were the most physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging days of my life. Dan Reeves would bring one hundred and ten NFL hopefuls to camp each year and every one of them had the physical tools, the raw talent to make the team. At the end of camp the forty nine man roster would be set, and sixty one physically capable players had been sent home. NFL clubs have scouting staffs that scour college and pro rosters across the country in search of athletes that have the physical tools to make their teams better. They run exhaustive tests and interviews on prospective draft choices and free agents. I was a twelfth round draft pick, the three hundred and tenth player drafted out of college in 1983. The Broncos sent two different scouts to test me and interview me at the University of Minnesota before the draft. One of the scouts even interviewed my girl friend. Imagine the scrutiny first and second round picks go through. The scouts make sure that each of the players they bring to camp can help the team, but the majority of the players don’t play a regular season down before they’re fired.

  • Dan Reeves Moves West
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 20, No. 1 (1998) DAN REEVES MOVES WEST Courtesy of The Pro Football Hall of Fame We were chewing the fat with members of the pro football beat not long ago and the subject of sports news bombshells of the century came up. Nominations were plentiful and discussion was prolonged, but, not surprisingly, no winner was declared. But one nomination is worth recalling to pro football fans. That would be the move of the Cleveland Rams to Los Angeles on January 12, 1946. Owner Dan Reeves forced the move and it was a sports bombshell that has/had prolonged effect not only on professional football, but on the professional sports scene as a whole. This was a shocker for a number of reasons: (1) The Rams less than a month earlier had won the NFL championship: (2) No major league franchise in any sport had ever called a West Coast city home before: (3) Air travel was still in its earlier stages and Los Angeles was 2000 long, hard land miles away from the nearest NFL city: (4) There was a strong tradition for college football in Los Angeles, but no tradition at all for pro football: (5) And most important, Reeves' fellow NFL owners were dead set against the move. But Reeves, who became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- his election to the pro grid shrine undoubtedly came in recognition of the later-proven genius of this move -- was just as determined that his team would not play in Cleveland again.

  • Rams' Team Travel
PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn LOS AnGELES RAMS Team History One of the National Football League’s oldest franchises, the Rams began their football life in Cleveland in 1937. They did no better than a .500 mark once during their first six seasons. They then disbanded for a year in 1943 because of the manpower shortages of the World War II era. When they finally did record a winning season, they hit the jackpot with a 15-14 victory over the Washington Redskins in the NFL championship game. A sensational rookie quarterback from UCLA, Bob Waterfield, was the league’s Player of the Year. That championship game proved to be the last the Rams would ever play in Cleveland. Dan Reeves, a shrewd businessman and a master innovator who had bought the team in 1941, decided to move the Rams to Los Angeles for the 1946 season. He then signed Kenny Washington and Woody Strode to make them the first two African-American athletes with an NFL contract since 1932. Reeves also instituted the famed “Free Football for Kids” program, providing the groundwork for today’s successful TV policies, and became the first to employ a full-time scouting staff. In their first four seasons on the West Coast, the Rams had to wage a costly head-to-head battle with the intra-city Dons of the All-America Football Conference. Reeves and the Rams suffered mammoth financial losses. But the AAFC folded after the 1949 season just as the Rams were embarking on a string of outstanding seasons on the field.

“REAL” JOBS Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback TOMMY MADDOX once pitched insurance policies before he got a job throwing footballs. JOSE CORTEZ of the Kansas City Chiefs, the only NFL player in history born in El Salvador, was once a roofer. And everybody knows that 2001 NFL MVP KURT WARNER once stocked groceries. Indeed, a surprising number of NFL players had “real” jobs before they came into the league. “Football is a blue-collar man’s game,” says former Washington Redskins cornerback DARRELL GREEN. And maybe that’s why the league is filled with so many former “blue-collar” workers. Following is a list of “real jobs” previously held by some NFL players: PLAYER, TEAM CAREER(S) David Akers, Philadelphia Substitute teacher; waiter James Allen, Houston Worked at Houston recording studio Mitch Berger, St. Louis Pumped gas in Canada Jose Cortez, Kansas City Roofer Mark Dixon, Miami Golf course lawn maintenance Jay Feely, Atlanta Financial consultant Ray Jackson, Cincinnati Wal-Mart sporting goods employee Michael Lewis, New Orleans Budweiser truck driver Tommy Maddox, Pittsburgh Insurance salesman Fred McCrary, New England Corrections officer David Patten, New England Landscaper, electrician, truck loader Nathan Poole, Arizona Youth counselor Jeff Saturday, Indianapolis Electrical supply company Al Wallace, Carolina Public school assistant principal Kurt Warner, St. Louis Stocked groceries OTHER JOBS Football takes up a lot of their time, but that has not prevented a good number of NFL players from preparing for life after the game by jumping into some other lines of work even as they “moonlight” on the football field. For example, Philadelphia Eages cornerback TROY VINCENT – the 2002 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year – is a full-fledged offseason entrepreneur.
