The Economic Impact of the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium Members

Since 1992, the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium (SMHEC) has fostered new and enhanced educational services and programs to citizens, businesses and other institutions in the Chicago metropolitan southland region.

SMHEC is a unique partnership of 11 higher education institutions; diverse in types and missions, extending geographically from the south side of Chicago, west to beyond Joliet, south of Kankakee, and east to the Indiana border. Our institutions include: DeVry University, Governors State University, Institute of Technology, , Kankakee Community College, , Moraine Valley Community College, Prairie State College, , , and the University of St. Francis. SMHEC members are both two-year and four-year degree granting institutions, and a combination of public, private and for-profit, as well as research and teaching institutions.

Through institutional collaboration, the Consortium focuses on programs that promote college readiness, support college completion, enhance educational opportunities and identify economies and efficiencies that result in streamlining and cost savings. Together, we provide a full range of higher education services to our region – which includes the south and southwestern portions of Chicagoland, struggling inner-city neighborhoods, suburbs with vastly diverse economies, and rural populations. Our mission, to help create an effective workforce, enhance our region, and share our knowledge, provides unique opportunities and challenges in this diverse area.

Governors State University (GSU), a comprehensive public institution, located in the Chicago suburbs, was created to be a model of innovation. After 45 years as an upper-division university, in the fall of 2014, GSU admitted its first freshman class, opened its first living-learning residence hall, and launched an athletic program. Illinois Institute of Technology is a national, technological, Ph.D.- granting research university, with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law, and design. Founded in 1940 and tracing its roots back to the 1890s with the foundings of Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, IIT brings a focused, interdisciplinary approach to education, including the Interprofessional Projects Program. With five campuses throughout the Chicago area and alumni around the world, IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2300 and total population of just over 7800.

Joliet Junior College, the nation’s first public community college, is an innovative and accessible institution dedicated to student learning, community prosperity, cultural enrichment, and inclusion. JJC delivers quality lifelong learning opportunities empowering diverse students and the community through academic excellence, workforce training, and comprehensive support services. The college offers pre-baccalaureate programs for students planning to transfer to four-year universities; occupational and technical education leading directly to employment; adult education and literacy programs; personal development courses; economic development programs; and support services necessary to help students succeed. JJC’s District 525 serves approximately 210,000 households in a 1,442-square-mile area that includes parts of seven counties—Will, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle, Livingston and Cook. KCC is committed to one mission: Enhancing quality of life through learning. KCC is dedicated to providing quality, comprehensive educational programs and services, and offer a supportive environment for lifelong learning for the development of the individual and the community. In its credit division, KCC awards associates degrees, associate in Applied Science degrees and certificates of completion. Students attend KCC both to prepare to transfer to four-year institutions and complete bachelor’s degrees and to prepare to enter the job market directly from KCC. KCC also offers non-degree programs to meet a variety of community needs, including workforce development and remedial development, through its office of Continuing Education and Career Services and its Division of Adult and Community Education.

Prairie State College (PSC) is a two-year community college offering associate degrees, technical and career certificates, and adult, corporate, and continuing education. Our 130-acre campus is located at South Halsted Street and Vollmer Road in Chicago Heights, Illinois. We serve over 11,000 students annually through our credit and non-credit courses. Prairie State College was the first Illinois community college to guarantee all credits will transfer to other Illinois colleges and universities, an assurance that has grown through the Illinois Articulation Initiative.

PSC offers associate degrees that prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions, associate degrees and certificates that prepare students for specific careers, and an that recognize the completion of a broad range of college-level courses. Degrees and certificates in more than 100 majors, including nursing and dental hygiene, are offered.

Established in 1927, South Suburban College (SSC) is a fully accredited, comprehensive community college with locations in South Holland and Oak Forest. SSC offers over 100 career education and transfer programs awarding Associate Degrees, professional certifications and transferable credits. SSC provides numerous community outreach programs including Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), Continuing Education and a Business & Career Institute. Full-time students can attend for approximately $4,500 per year. SSC’s Financial Aid Office will work to maximize student aid and tuition waivers, and the SSC Foundation offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities for all students.
