South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium The Economic Impact of the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium Members Since 1992, the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium (SMHEC) has fostered new and enhanced educational services and programs to citizens, businesses and other institutions in the Chicago metropolitan southland region. SMHEC is a unique partnership of 11 higher education institutions; diverse in types and missions, extending geographically from the south side of Chicago, west to beyond Joliet, south of Kankakee, and east to the Indiana border. Our institutions include: DeVry University, Governors State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Joliet Junior College, Kankakee Community College, Lewis University, Moraine Valley Community College, Prairie State College, Saint Xavier University, South Suburban College, and the University of St. Francis. SMHEC members are both two-year and four-year degree granting institutions, and a combination of public, private and for-profit, as well as research and teaching institutions. Through institutional collaboration, the Consortium focuses on programs that promote college readiness, support college completion, enhance educational opportunities and identify economies and efficiencies that result in streamlining and cost savings. Together, we provide a full range of higher education services to our region – which includes the south and southwestern portions of Chicagoland, struggling inner-city neighborhoods, suburbs with vastly diverse economies, and rural populations. Our mission, to help create an effective workforce, enhance our region, and share our knowledge, provides unique opportunities and challenges in this diverse area. After 45 years as an upper-division university, in the fall of 2014, GSU admitted its first freshman class, opened its first living-learning residence hall, and launched an athletic program. Founded in 1940 and tracing its roots back to the 1890s with the foundings of Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, IIT brings a focused, interdisciplinary approach to education, including the Interprofessional Projects Program. With five campuses throughout the Chicago area and alumni around the world, IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2300 and total population of just over 7800.
