Our UW-Superior Men’s Basketball 2018-2019 schedule has been officially released and is included in this newsletter. Also included are brief descriptions of the 11 incoming student-athletes that will be joining our program. Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the rest of your summer! GO YELLOWJACKETS! Greg Polkowski Head Men’s Basketball Coach Corey Hallsten is our July/August Featured alumnus and came to UW-Superior after graduating from Esko (MN) High School. Corey played for the Yellowjackets from 1996-2000. Following graduation in 2000 Corey has worked his way up through various radio stations/companies and now is currently the Radio Brand Manager at 101 WIXX in Green Bay, WI. Why did you Choose to attend UW-Superior? Playing with my cousin (Jerimy Hallsten) and going to a program I felt was heading in the right direction with a strong incoming class (I came in the same year as Vince Thomas) and a solid communications department. What was your favorite memory of playing at UW-Superior? So many things. My senior year we had the first winning record in over 15 years and made it to the conference semi-finals before we lost to Stevens Point in OT - which eventually made it to the Final Four (along with Eau Claire) that year - so I was part of a big turnaround over my 4 years. But mostly I think of the off-court shenanigans, especially my junior and sen- ior years, along with Ryan Tressel, being a “leader” on the team but always having a good time. I would constantly harass Brandon Vesel (in a loving way) and the long-running joke was that coach would eventually put us in the same room on a road trip. It never happened until the LAST road-trip of the year. As coach stood in the front of the bus calling out players and who their roomie would be at the hotel, he said “Al (Andre)....Corey….Brandon….Corey & Brandon have to share a cot…” the entire team busted out laughing, including all the coaches. (BTW: we did stay in the same room, but not the same bed, but I think Vesel was scared!!) What are your other fond memories of UW-Superior? I met my wife there my senior year; Sheri (Domitrovich) was a star on the UWS Women’s team at the time. We’re happily married now with 3 kids. Also, getting to work at KUWS and be “The Network” director (hip-hop/ rap show) and get really good hands-on experience in what my professional career (and passion) would end up being! In your eyes what makes UW-Superior unique from other Institutions? Small-town feel, you feel like more than a number and you get to know a LOT of people on-campus over 4 years! What did you take away from your time at UW-Superior that you still use in your life today? Staying positive during adversity. My first two years, we lost to Bo Ryan and UW-Platteville by an average of 40 points a game. My senior year we finally beat them and only a few of us were around still from my Freshman year. A lot of my fellow incoming class had left the team since then, so it felt good to “stick-it-out” during the early years and feel good about accomplishing what we did. This summer we enjoyed hosting 4 Basketball camps that totaled over 150 campers, in addition to our Extended Team Camp that was comprised of 26 High School Teams. Superior High School finished our team camp with a record of 12-0 to claim a first place finish.
