Romania: Jewish Family History Research Guide
Courtesy of the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute July 2007 Romania: Jewish Family History Research Guide Historical Background Like most European countries, Romania’s borders have changed considerably over time. Starting in the late 15 th century, the Ottoman Empire ruled the Romanian provinces of Moldavia, Walachia, and Dobruja, while Austria and Hungary controlled Banat, Bihor, Maramures, Satu Mare, and Transylvania. Austria took over Bukovina (northwestern Moldavia) in 1774, and Russia obtained Bessarabia (eastern Moldavia) in 1812. An unsuccessful Balkan revolt against the Turks ultimately led to Russian occupation of Walachia and Moldavia from 182934. The two principalities merged in 1859 to form Romania (also spelled Rumania or Roumania at various times), which remained subservient to the Ottomans until full independence was achieved in 1878. The province of Dobruja was also added at that time. After World War I Romania regained control over the territories of Banat, Bessarabia, Bihor, Bukovina, Maramures, Satu Mare, and Transylvania at the expense of AustriaHungary and Russia. During the Holocaust period, Romania temporarily gave up northern Transylvania (including northern Bihor, Maramures, and Satu Mare) to Hungary, and permanently lost northern Bukovina and Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) to the Soviet Union. Jews were present in the region under the Roman Empire, but subsequent invasions and wars severely disrupted their existence. The Jewish population increased significantly after 1800, primarily due to immigration. These resources at the Center for Jewish History contain further historical details: Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe Modern reference work gives a balanced history of disputed territories, such as Transylvania. Romanian topics are covered on pages 666698. -

The Igniş – Gutâi Mountain Tourist Planning in Terms of a Territorial System in Maramureş
Analele Universităţii din Oradea, Seria Geografie Year XXII, no. 2/2012 (December), pp. 308-315 ISSN 1221-1273, E-ISSN 2065-3409 Article no. 222114-596 THE IGNIŞ – GUTÂI MOUNTAIN TOURIST PLANNING IN TERMS OF A TERRITORIAL SYSTEM IN MARAMUREŞ Loredana PUI University of Oradea, Universităţii Street, no. 1, Oradea, Romania, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The tourism planning of Igniş - Gutâi mountain area is a relevant subject in the tourist thanks the gap between the natural and anthropic tourism potential and tourism infrastructure well represented almost nonexistent. The unique landscape, diversity and variety of natural and anthropogenic sightseeing, key indicators of tourist traffic signals a weak tourism phenomenon, even if they are individualized in small and medium-sized mountains with the natural exception. Being part of the small and medium mountains category, the tourism planning of Igniş - Gutâi Mountains must consider that they are component of a Territorial system. The novelty of this theme is emphasized by the way of tourist planning methodological tools which offer a different perspective to analyze the Igniş - Gutâi area. Thus, the scientific approach of this area will take into account the principles, the scientific norms and tourism planning methods and also the methods of Regional Geography and territorial systems. The starting point is the researcher‘s vision on the study area. He has seen the Igniş - Gutâi Mountains as an area subject to tourist planning, a region which provides the useful direction of research or the territorial system components cut in functional complexes. The original character is supported by the need for a territory interdisciplinary approach due to its complex structure, which can be found on the personal touch. -

The Status of Romanogobio Uranoscopus (Agassiz, 1828) Species, in Maramureş Mountains Nature Park (Romania)

ABSTRACT The condition of aquatic habitats typically occupied by Romanogobio uranoscopus within the Maramureş Mountains Natural Park fluctuates, in the best cases, between reduced to average. Good or excellent conservation status is now absent for populations of this species in the researched area. The identified human impact types (poaching, minor riverbeds morphodynamic changes, solid and liquid natural flow changes, destruction of the riparian vegetation and bush vegetation, habitat fragmentation/isolation of population, organic and mining pollution and displaced fish that are washed away during the periodic flooding in the lotic sectors uniformized by humans) are contributing to the diminished ecological state of Romanogobio uranoscopus habitats and for that reason populations. Romanogobio uranoscopus is now considered a rare species in the studied basin but where this species was specified as missing, it has been registered with a restorative potential. -

Research on the Surface Water Quality in Mining Influenced Area in North-Western Part of Romania
ISSN 0354-8724 (hard copy) | ISSN 1820-7138 (online) Research on the Surface Water Quality in Mining Influenced Area in North-Western part of Romania Irina SmicalA*, Adriana MunteanB, Eugen NourC Received: September 19, 2014 | Revised: January 29, 2015 | Accepted: February 28, 2015 Abstract The paper highlights the current situation of the quality of surface water in the areas influenced by min- ing activities in the north-western part of Romania. In this respect a series of investigations have been conducted regarding the contamination with heavy metals of the water of the Someş and Tisa hydro- graphic Basins, which cover the northern part of Maramures County and the south-western area of Maramures County, respectively. The results of the comparative research refer to the period between 1999 and 2011 and reveal the spe- cific heavy metal ions of mining activity: Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb Cd and Ni, as well as the water pH. The pre- sented values as annual average values reveal an increase in several heavy metals after the closure of mines, which is due to the lack of effectiveness of the closure and of the conservation of the mine gal- leries, as well as of the impaired functioning of the mining wastewater treatment plants. Key words: surface water, heavy metals, mining, tailing pond, Romania.
